a scoff rolls off his tongue just as quickly as his attitude shifts,    the once smug grin faded into an exhausted scowl.     her presence behind him radiates a fierce vexation,   hot to the touch,   but prepared to be masked at the sight of one of their coworkers.    for a moment,    adam debates whether he should keep it strictly professional as per her request,   or let another screw fall loose in the downfall of their frustrating relationship.      "  you gotta’ be kidding me right now  –––  ”     locker shuts by the shove of his wrist,   but it’s the only sound echoing through the room.     does she really want to do this here?

THE  DRIVE  IS  MOSTLY  SILENT  THIS  TIME.    there’s  no  yelling,    no  bickering   –––   adam’s  swollen  knuckles  lay  at  rest  in  his  lap  rather  than  defensively  clenched  to  white.      he  feels  as  though  he’s  waiting  for  a  wrath  that  isn’t  quite  showing  up,    the  lecture  he  deserves  for  going  in  without  backup.    they’ve  talked  about  their  policing,    and  the  way  he  took  this  operation  didn’t  match  with  hailey’s  values.     but  instead,   she’s  driving  quietly,   eyes  forward  on  the  road  and  a  tense  face  that,   for  once  lately,   didn’t  feel  like  bottled  up  anger.     adam  shifts  comfortably  in  his  seat,    gaze  following  her  concentrated  face  for  a  long  moment  before  a  small  grin  tugs  at  the  corners  of  his  lips,    eyes  falling  back  on  the  road  ahead.     “   you  were  worried  about  me  back  there,    weren’t  you?   ”

“   YOU  GOTTA’  BE  KIDDING  ME.    YOU’RE  MAD  AT  ME?   ”       the  words  pass  his  lips  in  a  scoff,    an  almost - laugh  held  at  the  pit  of  his  throat.     he  moves  up  on  his  feet,    steps  taken  toward  her  in  preparation  for  her  next  blow.    he  can  already  feel  where  this  is  going.    the  tension  between  them  has  been  building  with  for  a  while  now,   escalating  with  every  case  they  face.    when  they’re  alone,   away  from  the  job,     it  doesn’t  feel  so  impossible.   all  the  potential  is  there,   from  the  feelings  to  the  intimacy  –––  lots  of  it.     they’re  tangled  up  in  his  sheets,   warm  skin  against  his  and  teeth  clashing  between  smiling  kisses,     and  it  feels  right.      but  they  show  up  for  work  and  they’re  at  each  other’s  necks     (   and  not  in  the  way  adam  would  prefer   ),     finding   an  argument  in  nearly  every  disagreement  they  face.      the  thread  holding  this  relationship  together  becomes  twisted  and  torn,    frayed  all  around  the  edges  with  no  hope  for  repair.     

“   another  minute  and  who  knows  what  would  have  happened.     it  was  your  life  on  the  line  back  there.     yours.     i  was  not  about  to  take  that  risk.      and  if  you  have  a  problem  with  that    –––    well,    i  don’t  really  give  a  damn.   "
