it’s a fact that being competitive is in kageyama tobio’s nature.
whenever shoyo asks the both of you the question: who said i love you first?, tobio would always say he did. but in reality, you did say it first. you’d remind him of the time when they lost the spring tournament and even if you swore your parents would kill you because of curfew, you still stayed with tobio at the volleyball park where you tossed balls for him to set.
you told him you were in love with him then.
but all your boyfriend would say is, “i don’t remember!”
instead of getting upset, you’d laugh it off because you knew your tobio remembered it vividly. no way in hell would he forget he almost fainted when you held his hand that night.
and of course, kageyama tobio remembers. he remembered how your skin glowed faintly from the moonlight, he remembered how your voice was quiet, and kind, and never judging. he remembered how he never asked you to stay, but you did. he remembered how his aching heart needed you that night. and how he remembered he never said he loved you back. at least not yet.
he remembers how he knew he was already in love with you from the start, but he never had the chance to say it. he remembers how he even forgot that it was something he needed to say to you.
but he denies remembering it anyway.
he was competitive, yes, but even when you won his heart, you never teased him about it. you never made him feel that love is not what he thought. he thought it’s about how his gift to you must be fancier each year, how loud your voice must be when you cheer for him, how you two must look so much better beside each other compared to other couples.
but you taught him that love shouldn’t be about competing. it’s about you accepting his stubbornness in denying he remembered some stuff, how you only laugh it off even if tobio tells you he almost forgot that you two had a date after your practice, and how you were always so understanding that his career was his priority as of now.
and when shoyo would be suspicious that it wasn’t tobio who said it first, your eyes would only crinkle in amusement, and even though you said it first, you’d hold tobio’s hands and just agree.
in a normal day, tobio would only puff his chest, and his eyes would awkwardly glimmer. but today, it was different. he held your fingers tightly, and it took you by surprise because he has always been a bit shy.
“it was y/n who said it first—“, tobio started, a blush creeping across his cheeks. and when he sees you, and shoyo slightly in awe at the sincerity in his tone, tobio can’t help but bite his lip and defend himself either way.
“but—! but i thought i— i know i love y/n first, so technically, i said it first— I SAID IT FIRST!”
and shoyo would stick out his tongue to tobio like he didn’t believe it, and tease him like, “yeah right, you said it first IN YOUR MIND, IDIOT! but y/n said it out loud FIRST!”
and they maybe go on to argue about something pointless again, but you stayed still, hand still in his.
your tobio never lied, he’s always been honest to you, and you believe it. you believe that kageyama tobio did love you first.
to you, you never minded his competitiveness, but now you’re certain it’s what makes tobio uniquely himself.
-> masterlist
a/n: happy birthday to our most talented setter of karasuno 🥺 i believe kageyama is the biggest, most awkward nerd of a boyfriend ever!
im sick of seeing dom keishin ukai. enough of this, your already feeding the dom lovers as is . give me some domsub ukai or something bro, he’s so “i guess ill do whatever you want me to” kinda fella, stop treating him like he’s the “shut the fuck up and eat this dick bitch” ass guy.. he’s so cyuteee cut my lil cutie some slack i mean look at him!!!
im feeding my delusions i fear. SO many people see him as dom but he’s so sweetie and cutiebae.. ugh, my little keishin <3 🥹
i think hinata’s receive of aran’s spike is a great example of how hinata enchants and enamors everyone he meets. it’s not only because he’s wildly skilled, but because just when you think you know him and understand him, can predict him, he just shows how much he’s grown since the last time you looked at him.
this boy made a save that even nishinoya might have struggled with. considering where he started, it was miraculous in some ways. it hadn’t even been a year!! he’s incredible!! he made that save, and worked so hard to keep it alive. the whole team did.
and they lost the point.
anybody would have been disappointed. hell, the entire team was disappointed, and it wasn’t even their save. but hinata couldn’t care less that they lost the point. it didn’t matter. why would it? he’d just grown as a player, and grown separate from kageyama! he’d just done something really, really hard, and he’d done it really, really well! his hard work paid off! one point was nothing.
blaming the people around him doesn’t even cross his mind. it’s not their faults. it would have been so, so easy for him to feel even the slightest bit of resentment, but no. he just... rejoices. That was a win for him, so why would he be disappointed? that just means next time, their means of improvement is obvious! next time, they’ll score!
he’s always like that. he’s exuberant and bright and he doesn’t get frustrated with his teammates. it doesn’t even cross his mind. even the frustration he shows kageyama is mostly just their way of checking in on one another. he’s just purely excited to have people to play with, excited to play with people who want to play with him. who couldn’t look at that and be endeared? everyone feels seen and appreciated, playing with him and against him.
he’s just as remarkable in ways unrelated to volleyball as he is in ways related to it, and i think season four did a really nice job of showing it :)
Their dorm is connected to 2 other suites so they have access to a fridge & utilities to cook
i don’t mention their other suite mates this oneshot focuses on Suga & Daichi
Covid shut down their school
classes are still in session virtually
all students must stay in their dorms unless absolutely necessary (so to go & buy groceries)
Over their years rooming together, Suga has acquired lots of stuff to make coffee
he has a milk frother, french press/ a bunch of stuff
so Suga can make many various caffeinated beverages (he’s like a mini-barista)
Suga drinks coffee.
Too much, in Daichi’s humble opinion.
He has at least 4 cups everyday. Sometimes more.
CONCERNINGLY MORE.
An iced macchiato for his 7am class. Why did Suga think signing up for this class would be a good idea? He doesn’t know. Suga supposes that if he were in the classroom instead of taking classes out of his dorm room things might be different, but now he wishes past Suga had been kinder to present Suga... because can’t keep his eyes open for Calc class without coffee-in-hand. Thankfully Bokuto is in the class too & asks a question every 5 minutes which keeps the class engaged, but Suga has to wonder how Bokuto can somehow be so loud over Zoom. It’s uncanny.
An americano at 11am for la clase de español. Sitting in a bean-chair near the window for some natural light, Suga sips from his cup & listens as la profesora talks. They’re going into breakout zooms to discuss their opinions on what happened in the last episode of “Gran Hotel” they had to watch for homework, & he sadly puts the americano down to unmute. Akaashi is randomly assigned his partner today, so the two hablan sobre las problemas de Julio y Alicia.
A cold brew at 2pm for Literature. At this point, all the earlier caffeine has worn off, so Suga needs something strong to keep him going. This class is both a blessing & a curse; they only meet once a week, but their sessions are 2 & half hours long. They’re dreadful. At least Daichi takes the class as well, so they can share a monitor and sit under a warm blanket together during class, but not even cuddles can make the class end sooner. After a while of listening to the professor lecture about the peculiarities of the syntax of some Shakespeare poem, Suga feels like his brain has turned to mush, and sips of the cold brew force his internal systems to remain awake, just for a little longer.
A few shots of straight expresso at 4pm to study. On days like today, all of Suga’s classes finish in the morning, so getting work done as soon as possible means he can go to bed as soon as possible. A while ago Suga tried one of those bang energy drinks Noya had told him about, but it was too sugary. Suga likes his coffee plain, which surprised a lot of his friends, but he just can’t handle that much sweetness in a beverage. He’d rather eat something sweet alongside his coffee to balance out the bitterness. But with the bean juice flowing through his veins, he feels motivated to tackle his assignments and aggressively gets to work.
As Suga’s roommate, he feels like it’s partially his responsibility if Suga gets a heart attack from too much coffee, but google says that a lethal amount of caffeine is around 30 cups of coffee... It would be pretty difficult to drink that much coffee in one sitting (right? right?!?!?!?), but still, Daichi is worried.
Seeing Suga spend hours up each night working so diligently on his homework so he can succeed makes him feel proud, yet at the same time increasingly frustrated that Suga’s dream degree seems to be slowly eating away at his health.
Watching Suga start to shake on the daily due to caffeine is not something he wants to get used to, but hopefully the habit will die off as the quarter ends (soon! thank goodness).
Daichi sits on his bed, pondering different ways he can help Suga ease his workload, when a loud slam pulls him from his thoughts. Suga has fallen asleep on his textbook.
Suga would want to be woken up, but seeing how easily Suga can fall asleep even after a consuming a double(?) expresso is quite concerning. He must be beyond exhausted. Still, knowing that he would get an earful for not waking him up earlier, Daichi sets an hour timer on his phone. He’ll wake up Suga then.
And while he’s not one to enable Suga’s bad habits, maybe in the meantime he’ll try to make Suga some coffee. But preferably one with a lower caffeine concentration.
Walking to their suite’s kitchen area and getting out the milk frother & coffee beans, Daichi wonders if he could possibly pass off hot chocolate as coffee. He doesn’t think Suga would buy it, but it’s worth a shot.
goshiki tsutomu is the little brother you swear you treasure so much, but would kill when he tried to burn your kitchen again cooking bacon for breakfast. he loves being called “tomu”, but he’d never admit it because he’s highschool now.
volleyball is his passion, and you, as his older sibling, knows that better than anyone. he never stops chatting your ear off about his skills, how he’d be an ace, and how he’d make a spike so good that ushijima-san would recognize him, and shirabu-san would stop glaring at him.
morning, lunch, afternoon, evening, all you hear is volleyball coming out of tsutomu’s mouth and you swear you can finish his sentences for him now.
you had always been so firm with him, but you let him express himself freely, and he turned the way he is now because of you. he is open to everyone, he knows he’s great and will be greater because of your support, and he knows you always have his back.
you never missed tomu’s games. never. he has always been your priority. and even though he’s surrounded by teammates who sometimes is harsh on him, tsutomu never takes it to heart because he knows you’d compliment him a hundred times more than the criticisms he’d get.
tsutomu is growing fast. you knew for a fact he was just using a chair to reach the kitchen sink and the faucet in the bathroom, and the next second you blink, he’s way taller than you.
you miss him. but you never tell him.
you miss the boy who’d always swore would be taller than you. the boy who’d always spill milk on your homework. the boy who’d throw a tantrum whenever he fails his jump serves in your backyard.
now, he’s a highschool student. talking about national tournaments, (finally) studying his lessons just so he could have a good enough score to join the training camp this weekend, waking up earlier than you to jog.
and then maybe, the next time you blink, he’d be in his uniform, holding his diploma, being scouted by the national volleyball teams, moving to the city for university.
so now, you’d add an extra meat in his bento, ruffle his uneven bowlcut hair a little longer, waste your own time listening to him ramble about volleyball for hours in the dining table, tossing volleyballs for him when you get home just so he could practice, buy him ice cream every after school when he asks for it. you’d hug him even if he pushes you off. you’d compliment him even if sometimes you’re worried it’ll get in his head.
you have always believed in him. believed in his talent, his hardwork, his skills. you were the first who saw everything he does best now, the first who told him his future is as bright as the stars, high as the clouds, the one who abandoned your own extracurriculars just so your parents could enroll him in that elite highschool.
every day, he’s a step closer to his success, and a step farther away from you. you won’t stop him. never.
