Hello everyone.

I think we’re all aware of how much of a hold Rough Day by has on the Din/Pedro fandom. It’s had countless pieces of fanart, recommendations, fan videos, and so on. It’s everywhere. You can’t go on any social media platform without seeing it. It’s basically its own fandom at this point; some fans are so loyal to the fic that they claim that it’s the “best” of Din fics and compare other people’s writing to it.

And now, people are comparing my art to it.

I recently posted an artwork of Oberyn Martell on my social media platforms (here). Since then, people have been telling me that it reminds them of Rough Day, if “Din went to the festival with sweet girl.” They saw my artwork, despite the caption explicitly stating that it was of Oberyn, and automatically shoved that out of the way and told me that it’s about Rough Day.

Are you serious?

Normally, I would have no issue with a commenter or two saying “oh, this looks like it’s from ____ fic!” or something like that. I find it pretty cute, to be honest. But as someone who has had my writing and my friends’ writing compared to Rough Day, and as someone who has gotten hate because I’ve been bringing these issues to light, I am sick of having everything being compared to RD.

I spent countless hours making that piece of artwork, and I was (and still am) so proud of it. So I’m dead serious when I say I’m not in the mood to have my artwork, my hard work, be immediately labeled as RD fanart.

That is my own artwork that I made for myself—not only for my portfolio and my own enjoyment, and not only for sharing it with others for their enjoyment, but for my own fic that I’m writing. I explicitly stated that it was of Oberyn—so, unless I state that it’s RD fanart, don’t tell me that it is.

My work does not belong to Rough Day.

I’m in no way, shape, or form trying to tear down and hate on RD fanart or fic fanart in general. Hell, that Oberyn painting is fanart for a fic, too. I think RD fanart is really impressive, and the artists are amazing. What I’m trying to explain is that everything in the fic/art side of the Din fandom is being ceaselessly compared to RD as if everything revolves around it—as if everything, no matter what, is always about Rough Day. It needs to stop.

This fandom should not revolve around a singular fic.

Even if these comparisons are done with good intentions, it is so, so harmful to creators who put out their own Din/Pedro content for others to enjoy. It serves as a sick, nagging reminder that nothing you do will ever be good enough as Rough Day, and that everything you put out will end up being compared to it. It will always be lesser-than.

So please, I beg of you, stop it. Stop with the comparisons. Stop with the obsession. And, most importantly, stop comparing my artwork to Rough Day.

I’m sick of it.
