on some level, it felt wrong to approach him. byleth could find common ground with most of his ‘enemies,’ especially in a no-man’s land of neutral ground. but hubert... he and edelgard had been through so much. their deaths had pained him, but it wasn’t a pain he had any right to. to be sad for edelgard was natural, but to be sad for hubert felt.. almost self-indulgent.
staring had always been a terrible habit of byleth’s, particularly while lost in thought. when hubert noticed him watching, acknowledged him, byleth was silent a moment longer before finally, he could hold himself back no longer. perhaps he could apologize to hubert for his self-indulgence later.
but for now, instead of apologizing, he asked, “where you come from... were you able to find happiness?”
