Twisting his hands together, Ginta watched Hakkaku fidget as he stood waiting for the speech he’d been told to prepare for.
The one Ginta had practically begged to get to recite first, since Hakkaku’s apparently also had something important to say, but if Ginta didn’t get this out, he never would.
He couldn’t see her from his vantage point, but he could practically feel Kagome giving him an encouraging thumbs up from wherever she was hiding.
He only had the courage to do this because of her, after all.
“Are you sure I can’t go first? You look… ill.” Hakkaku asked, and the blood drained from Ginta’s face.
“No!! No I definitely need to go first.”
“Okay. If you’re sure..”
“I am!” He shouted, but the words he’d rehearsed with Kagome over and over and over froze solid on his tongue, like it was winter in his body despite the balmy breezes of spring brushing through their fur.
“I uh…. I just wanted to say….”
“Yeah?”
“I…. I…… I uh…. I mean….-“
He gulped, his face burning and his skin going clammy as Hakkaku’s tail whipped back and forth in nervousness.
“I… what I’m trying to say is…-“
“Listen this will only take a second, so I’m just gonna go first, alright? I-“
“No!!! No I can do this! I promise! I-“
“But you’re struggling! Maybe if I go first it won’t be so hard.”
“It’s not so hard, I can do it!”
“But mine will only take a second!”
“So Will mine!”
“Mine’s more important!”
“No, mine is! I’m just gonna say it!”
“No I’m just gonna say it!”
“I LOVE YOU!” they shouted in unison, and then the whole world stopped as they registered what the other one said.
“You… what?”
“You do?!”
“YES!!!! You guys did so great!!! Oh I’m so happy!” Kagome shouted, bursting out from behind a bush at the edge of the clearing, on wind and far enough that they couldn’t smell her. She raced across the grass and threw her arms around their necks, pulling them in for a hug that would have strangled them had they been human.
“I’m so proud of you both!”
“You… you knew he was…”
“You talked to him too?!” Ginta and Hakkaku blurted out, and Kagome beamed up at them, mischief dancing in eyes drenched with tears.
“Yes!!!! That’s why I was so insistent you both confess! I knew it would end well! Now you two can be truly happy, no more secret love!”
They looked at each other as Kagome pulled them even closer, crying happily into their shoulders, and slowly matching smiles stretched their mouths. The absurdity of their situation settled over them, as well as the sheer, mind melting relief and elation of having their wildest dreams come true, and they laughed together, wrapping their arms around Kagome- and each other- thankful for her meddling.
“Can I plan your wedding?” She asked, and though wolves didn’t have weddings, they couldn’t deny their matchmaker anything.
