The Jackson 5ive's 9th studio album was released on 5 September 1974.
While Michael had released 3 solo albums (Got to Be There, Ben, and Music & Me), he continued to record with his brothers, despite their waning popularity (their 1973 album, G.I.T.: Get It Together had only peaked at #100 in the US, their worst performing album to date). The Jacksons and producer Hal Davis decided to develop a concept album around the emerging dance music that would become disco.
The lead single, "Dancing Machine" (co-written by Davis with Don Fletcher and Dean Parks), released in February 1974, would go on to sell more than 3 million copies and peak at #2 in the US (and was the group's first Top Ten hit in 3 years). Dancing Machine, the album, would peak at #16, restoring the group's popularity.
