When I brought up theory 1, I of course meant that both our Ciel and Sebastian were trying to get information from Undertaker about the missing children during the circus arc. Ciel ordered Sebastian to wait outside, so that scene showed our Ciel alone with Undertaker for several hours. This was both in the manga and in the anime. Undertaker had plenty of time to take half of our Ciel's soul in a sneaky ninja way that it's likely that our Ciel didn't notice or felt anything wrong.

Somehow… it seems odd to me the idea that our earl would be able to function properly on just half a soul. If not having one at all makes you technically dead, how does all of a sudden having only half of one make you feel?
