When I paint someone famous, it’s not their star status that intrigues me. It’s their life story that I become obsessed with, and art is my way of expelling what I absorb (via television, magazines, Internet, etc.) about that person. It invades my body like the flu until it has to get out. And if you haven’t guessed it by now, all of my celebrity portraits display the same side effect: a life that makes me question, Was it all worth it? “On the road to becoming an ICON, there is ALWAYS a dark side.” “Enter The Rockstar” An exhibit of Frida Kahlo, the brilliant half-Mexican painter who became an icon, through the eyes of a half-Puerto Rican painter who became a fan.
