The Magician: How does your character unleash their creativity or resourcefulness?

Halin: general scheming and plotting. Conceptualizing moving plots, scarce resources, and the love of the adrenaline rush. Unfortunately I am a little too stupid to be doing her justice lol, but ideally she should be playing 4D chess at all times to pull of jobs and heists. She also reads a lot of poetry and likes to spout what she thinks is relevant for the situation (which is making me read and annotate poetry now. Thanks Hal)

Raiden: I think Raiden and Halin are actually really similar? But Raiden downplays it since he doesn’t want any expectations on him. But he’s also good at recognizing moving parts and patterns (hence the reason he figures out there’s a themi onboard the prison.) other than that I don’t think Raiden really likes to tap into his creativity? He’s a decent singer, and he’d probably be really good at whatever he picked up, but there’s something about the act of creation that just doesn’t sit well with him.

The Magician in Reverse: When was your character manipulated?

Halin: … Actium Chapter 8 coming 2035 at some point! But essentially, Halin overlooked some glaring red flags bc she was in love. That’s not gonna be something she allows to happen again.

Raiden: Raiden manipulates Raiden lol. But for sure when he was younger and enlisted into some awful work for the paycheck. Now, he’s also aware enough to realize when he’s being manipulated, but he’ll still choose to go along with it.

“If you could be anything,” Halin started, the crumbling roof tiles digging into her back, “no matter how outlandish, no matter the cost, what would you be doing right now?”

Millie’s gaze never left the blanket of stars above them, but she did purse her lips for a brief moment before answering. “Why think about it? I can’t be anything. It’s a waste of energy.”

“Guess I should have expected that answer.” The still air was cool but not cold, that perfect temperature where you couldn’t tell where your skin ended and the night began. The perfect weather, Halin thought, for conversations like this, where words easily tumbled from lips before dissolving away. 

“You did expect that answer.” Millie’s tone wasn’t accusatory. It was a simple fact.

“Yeah.”

They quieted for a long moment, but the space was never filled with silence. A couple was arguing somewhere outside of the worn building beneath them, something about missing funds and joint bank accounts. Maybe spacecraft or cars were also roaring by, but the years had deafened Halin’s young ears to the sound. 

Halin shifted before she spoke again, the tile moving from her spine to her shoulder blade. “I always thought you would make a good chef. Open a restaurant somewhere. Maybe Earth. Give me your most expensive meals for free.”

Millie breathed a laugh, her hands busy with the frayed edges of the rope that lay in her lap. “I already feed you for free.” She finally turned from the indigo abyss to meet Halin’s eyes. “What’s this about?”

The “I can’t stand when you get philosophical like this,” was absent, the night too pleasant to even entertain a slightly sour thought. Not that Halin would have taken offense. 

“Ask me,” Halin suggested.

“Alright. What would you be doing?”

“I don’t know,” Halin answered instantly, frowning as her own words drifted away. “Sometimes I try think about what I would like my life to be like. I indulge. But I can never think of anything.” She could imagine a hypothetical life for Millie in perfect clarity. Millie and Nahuel crowded in a small kitchen while Ma and Mama Auman and Khine chatted over drinks in rickety dining chairs. Nahuel would have finished his residency and would have a high-paying job. The loan that Millie took out for her brother’s education would be long paid off. The Aumans would be happy. Free. And Halin would be…

There. Or maybe not. The edge of her vision was too fuzzy.

Millie whistled a low tone as a ship entered the atmosphere high above them. “Then don’t think about it. I can’t change my debt, you can’t change the fact that your mom needs to eat. Ain’t no use in developing an ulcer.”

“Maybe.”

A long pause, and then: “Have a plan for the bank yet?”

Halin scoffed, the tile worming its way out of her back as she pulled herself to her feet. She removed the gloves tucked into her belt, tugged them on, and pulled the surrounding tiles away. A Halin-sized hole greeted her, dropping right into the molding attic. “Yeah. That was the first thing I figured out. Toss me the rope?”
