(P.S: they’re taking their first trip as a couple together and are not using teleportation magic because Hex wanted them to travel like a regular couple and have the ‘airport experience,’ where are they going? You decide!)

Today is bat appreciation day so it’s headcanon time!

As The Crown Prince Of Halloween™, Hex’s Halloween special interest is bats. He absolutely loves bats and has tons of bat related clothing and decor (bat wing hoodies, a onesie, shirts, pillows, little novelty toys, etc.). He yaps to Coal about them whenever he can, everything from their extreme difference in sizes (“the smallest bat is the bumblebee bat, which is only about one to one and a half inches while the giant golden-crowned flying fox has a body length of about a foot but with a five foot wingspan!”) to his favorite species (“vampire bats, obviously, ghost bats, Honduran white bats—they look like grumpy little cotton balls!—and flying foxes because they’re like dogs with wings”) and Coal loves it. His favorite “parlor trick” is to randomly smooch Hex and say “Bat fact!” And Hex will rattle off some bat fact from the thousands he knows (Iris and Kris agree that it was cute the first 20 times but now COAL STOP).

One place Hex’s love of bats comes from is watching “The Little Vampire” when he was five and his little five-year-old brain thinking that if vampires are apart of Halloween and vampires can turn into bats then obviously, as the Prince of Halloween, he can turn into a bat too, right? He asks Raven, who is 9/10 and loves her ‘job’ of being the older sibling who can lie to her younger sibling for her own amusement, and she tells him of course they can, you just have to concentrate really hard and scream “bat!” and his little eyes sparkled in awe and thus Carina and Ichabod kept having to catch him at the last minute when he put on a vampire bat cape and jumped off the sofa screaming “Bat!” (At first they thought it was cute but when he moved from the lower-to-the-ground soft couch to the top of a bookcase, they put a stop to it).

Hex’s has two most prized bat-related possessions, the first is a video he took with Raven. He’s sixteen and she’s 20 and they’re wearing fun Halloween-y gothic fashion complete with their bat hoodies and they’re dancing and lip syncing to this entire scene and the Batty Coda rap from Ferngully: The Last Rainforest and being goofy teenagers/young adults. Hex has it saved a million times in various places so he never loses it.

The second is a collection of real vintage “I’m batty for you” Valentines from Coal for their first Valentine’s Day as a couple. Coal found them on eBay and had a bidding war with someone over them but he won to give them to Hex in the end.
