MoveOn: Tell the electors to reject Trump!

Tomorrow, members of the Electoral College are expected to gather in statehouses across the country. And let's be clear: it's likely most electors will cast votes for Donald Trump as the next president.

But we can't give up. We have one more day to ask electors to vote their conscience and reject a demagogue with foreign entanglements and shrouded finances—a step some courageous Republican electors are considering.

And, even if we fail to sway the electors, we have this one day to send a message to Trump, to political leaders of both parties, to the media, and to the American public: We, the majority, reject Donald Trump—and we, the majority, are ready to resist his agenda of economic inequality, corporate kleptocracy, authoritarianism, and bigotry with unprecedented fervor.

Tomorrow morning, MoveOn members will join events organized by allies all across the country. These events will be unlike any in modern American history: vocal, visible actions orchestrated around the Electoral College vote. Thousands of Americans will ask electors to vote their conscience—and will show the country that the resistance to Trump and Trumpism will be bold, ubiquitous, and unwavering.

Can't attend in person? Then please—right now and tomorrow—post on Facebook, Twitter, or the social media platform of your choice the message you wish you could deliver in person to a wavering Republican elector and tag it #ElectoralCollege.

These messages may or may not reach the electors, but they will show solidarity with those who are joining the statehouse actions and help build the visible movement resisting Trump and his toxic agenda.

This week, MoveOn members voted overwhelmingly to run a campaign to ask the electors to reject Trump. We produced a video with a Republican elector who has made the case for why he can not and will not vote for Trump. The video has already been seen online more than 3 million times. We bought airtime to run the video on MSNBC and Fox in order to reach a broader audience and to help influence electors who were similarly considering voting their conscience.

More than 200,000 MoveOn members asked President Obama to declassify the CIA evidence about Russian efforts to influence our election and brief electors before they are asked to vote, and more than 17,000 MoveOn members picked up the phone and called the White House to demand the same.

If the electors do choose Trump, we will resist the Trump Republican agenda every step of the way.

We're already organizing speak-outs this Tuesday at Republican Senate offices across the country to send a clear message—"Don't Take Away Our Health Care"—as we fight to defend Obamacare, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Last week, we organized a march in Washington to call on President Obama to repeal a Bush-era program that could quickly become Trump's "Muslim registry"—and we'll continue to fight Trump's extreme Islamophobic agenda.

Also last week, we participated in petition deliveries at Trump Tower and around the country to highlight Trump's extraordinary conflicts of interest, and we will continue to demand that congressional Republicans investigate his finances, as well as his ties to Russian leaders and the Russian government's interference in our election.

And following up on our efforts to call out white supremacist Steve Bannon as Trump's chief adviser, we're preparing to oppose Trump's worst appointees during their confirmation processes in the new year.

Trump's team and his proposed policies reveal an agenda that will bankrupt our nation for the sake of corporations and billionaires, betray working Americans, and use racism and xenophobia to divide us as a nation.

Today on social media, tomorrow at statehouses, Tuesday at Senate offices, and every day after, we will say "Hell no!" to that agenda. And we'll work day in and day out to build a passionate, patriotic, and inclusive movement for our collective future.

“Tomorrow, we are going to do something that has never been done before. We are going to try to stop an incoming president-elect from taking office. We are going to try to stop Trump.

Trump represents an unprecedented threat to our country and our constitution. He is a dangerous demagogue that would only reach the presidency through a radically undemocratic election. He lost the popular vote by almost 3 million ballots; his narrow electoral victory in key battleground states is only due to massive voter suppression; and he benefitted from Russia hacking into our elections [as confirmed by the CIA and the FBI].

But he's not our president yet. Tomorrow, on December 19, 538 Electors will determine who reaches the White House. It is their constitutional duty to vote their conscience and respect the will of the people. One Republican Elector has already publicly committed to vote against Trump and we know that at least twenty more are seriously considering doing the same.

That makes our mission simple: mobilize as many people as possible to make sure they know that the American people are behind them. This is going to be the largest democracy protest in a generation. Now is the time to go all in and do all that you can to try and stop Trump. Get on the phone. Rock out on social media. Tell everyone you know that this is the time to stand up and fight for our future.”
