I love when we get to see Mark S scared or angry, like I just love seeing more of what he wouldāve been like when he started at Lumon. I think he kindof has had to settle into this state of pseudo-acceptance of the way heās treated, because heās done the rebelling and threatening to kill people and trying to quit and itās been 2 years and heās still here and thereās no getting out. Heās very resigned and beaten down, he tells himself everything is fine and he tries not to be scared when heās led to the breakroom and he follows the rules because āMr Milchick cant always be nice like that.ā
But he is scared of what Lumon does to him, of what they might do next, and I love when we get to see those carefully constructed walls come down even a little. His desperation when Helly is trying to break all the same rules he did, how he runs and screams that she doesnāt understand. Him asking Ms Cobel if sheās mad at him, and the look on his face when sheās waiting for him in the break room. The way heās shaking wide eyed and tries to bolt when heās woken up in the cabin especially, heās taught himself to be okay with a lot of things but when presented with something new he is immediately terrified, that initial fear comes rushing back.
And I think itās very interesting that for his anger it really only comes out when other people are wronged. And I think itās because a large part of his rationalization is dependent on it somehow being his fault. But when Helly shows up he just, canāt apply that logic to her. He knows she doesnāt deserve the pain, he canāt rationalize it when itās not him because he does know they shouldnāt be treated like this. And at first he just tries to just take as many punishments as possible, makes it make sense by coming up with reasons itās his fault. But then he just gets pissed. Thereās no way he can rationalize them taking all his friends away, thereās no way thatās fair, so heās planting notes and calling the board and almost entirely drops the perfectly poised Mark S. attitude heās been holding this whole time.
And idk thatās just my favorite thing, the acknowledgement that the way Mark S. behaves is because heās been beaten into submission, and the very realistic way that submission cracks under pressure.
A masterful analysis.
Occasionally forget people genuinely think capitalism is thousands of years old
One time I was talking about Robin Hood with some coworkers and one guy was like āhe was bad because the people he helped learned to expect handoutsā and I wanted to be like⦠okay can you explain how that flawed capitalist propaganda applies to feudalism
reminder that capitalism was literally invented in the 16th century
Thatās an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people donāt know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, weāve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless theyāre talking about political theory and philosophy, so itās easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. Itās the difference between āyouāre a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell itā and āyouāre Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.ā There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
An alarming amount of people seem to think capitalism = all trade, and I donāt think thatās a coincidence.
And that, comrades, is why we need to seize the means of production
It's my 16 year anniversary on Tumblr š„³
How does it feel? I don't know, I...
mark s choosing life and love makes me so emotional. every part of this show makes me emotional!! i love complex stories that cause arguments!!
"Okay, refiners! Let's get this new group photo before the melon bloat sets in."
It's so, SO important to share success stories like this. I know an actual JPL engineer who doesn't believe in climate change because, "you never hear about acid rain anymore."
He thinks climate change can be lumped in with acid rain and the ozone layer of "things that were overblown and not really important because no one talks about it anymore."
It didn't even occur to him that we actively fixed the problem. Here's the EPA page on acid rainfall.
From the page:
It's also important to talk about success stories tonfuel hope that we can overcome current and future conservation and environmental issues.
A group of far-future linguists and archeologists suddenly *poof* into existence in front of me. One is holding a tablet. "What is the difference between 'red sauce' and 'tomato sauce?'" they ask me. "The distinction is not clear in extant texts from this time and place."
"Uh, they're the same thing," I tell them. "Who are you?"
"Yes!" the being with the tablet exclaims.
One of the other researchers groans. "No! My thesis...months of writing wasted..." One of the others comforts them.
"Now, what is this object for?" The first researcher holds up a discolored, dinged-up plastic object. It's clearly been buried in the ground for quite some time, but the two holes and the scuffed plastic window are distinctive.
"That's a cassette tape. You record music with it."
"Interesting, interesting." The being enters something on the tablet.
"How are you speaking English?"
"Sophisticated translation technology," one of the researchers confides. "We are students of your society. From the future."
"What does this pictogram represent?" The researcher with the tablet turns it around so that the screen faces me.
It's the eggplant emoji.
"Sex," I say. "Why do you need to ask me this if you can time travel or whatever? Can't you just go wherever you want to go and look around and see how these things are being used?"
The beings shift guiltily and look at each other. "Technically, travel to times and places prior the advent of time travel is strictly prohibited. Paradoxes, you know."
"Oh."
"We must be get back before our advisor returns to the lab. Just don't tell anyone you saw us, alright? The space-time continuity depends on it. Can you do that?"
"Uh, sure, I guess?"
One of them pats me on the head. "And don't go to Mars."
"Okay. Wait, why? Is it dangerous?"
"No. Just not worth it."
The group disappears in a shimmering light.
The cassette clatters to the sidewalk behind them.
Out of befuddlement, mainly, I pick it up. It's clearly old, discolored and scuffed, but it still has tape in it.
I carry the tape around in my pocket for a while. The curiosity builds. I want to know what's on that tape. I don't have a cassette player anymore, so I go to Goodwill and pick up the first one I can find, praying that it still works. I plug it in. It turns on.
I slide the tape inside. It's dirty, but it still seems to be in decent shape. I snap the player closed and hit play. The wheels begin to turn. I hold my breath.
A familiar tune starts up. A wobbly voice comes out of the machine.

Misogyny as policy treats women as 'less than'.
There is no law that controls a man's body. Now do the same for women.
Equal protection is the law.
Anti-feminism is conservative default.

I OWE MY SOUL TO THE COMPANY STORE | SEVERANCE | 16 TONS
A Vulcan named Stork works at the Terran adoption agency. Parents always request that he be the one to deliver their child to them.
Itās years before anyone explains it to him.
People keep gifting him robes with long white birds on them.
The fun thing is he would understand why people were getting him outfits with storks on them. Thatās a word, itās his name, straightforward. All the humans get him the same gag gift, but like, theyāre putting effort in at least. This is a genuinely nice outfit. Stork will be a walking zero-effort pun sometimes, rather than waste a perfectly fine robe.
Itās fine. This is a readily comprehensible human illogic. Exactly the kind of thing he expected from moving to Earth.
Six years in he finds out about the stork bringing babies.
Stork has a good long meditation session about this myth, his name, his job, the outfits, the whole shebang (or whatever Vulcan concept is the equivalent).
And he decides heās honored by it, in a humanly illogical way.
The humans are asking him to do what is after all his job, and specifically requesting him for the joy his name brings them on top of an already agreeable and satisfying task. He has no objection to engendering positive emotions in others. Harm hastens the heat-death of the universe, Surak teaches, so happiness must logically slow it down.Ā
Plus, Vulcans of his generation loveĀ puns. There were two decades of punning competitions in colleges across the planet. So when he realizes that he isĀ a walking zero-effort pun, and that the humans alsoĀ love the pun, he is all for it. He is the Joe Cool of the entire Vulcan population in his city.Ā
And via this pun, the humans are including him in a cherished and traditional myth, by casting him as the literal bringer of life and the expander of families.Ā
Thereās no downside. Stork wears his robes, pins, keychains, and other bird-related tchotchkes with genuine pride.Ā
YES ITāS BACK ON MY DASH AT LAST
For real though working together with some human social workers, a Vulcan would be an excellent caretaker for children in an adoption center.
Child has a meltdown? Imagine Stork, perfectly calm and unbothered, approaching the kid and sayingĀ āYou appear quite upset, Eliza. If you would please allow me to relocate you to theĀ ābean-bag-chair,ā we can discuss the source of your distress.ā
A Vulcan educated in medicine and child psychology would be endlessly patient with a kid with behavioral issues. Stork wouldnāt get or upset or frustrated. After all, these are children with medical and psychological conditions. It would be illogical to blame the child or to not treat them with the appropriate care.
Even if the a little one was having a bad day or was just overtired, Stork wouldnāt get angry. He might even be a calming presence. Any new kids acting out would learn real quick that theyād have better luck trying to arm-wrestle a Klingon than get a rise out of Stork.
Not only that, Vulcans live much longer than humans. Imagine Stork looking virtually unchanged as decades pass. Kids heād helped years ago would turn up fully grown, maybe there to adopt their own kids, and run into Stork, looking almost exactly as they remember him.
And heād probably remember them too. āWelcome back, Eliza.ā

star trek heritage post (November 14th, 2020)
I too will reboot this until the now-slightly-later heat death of the universe, for all of this has given me much joy.
i suddenly became curious and then remembered i had a way to sate that curiosity (assuming people oblige me by reblogging this)

"nothing is real atoms never touch each other youve never touched anything in your life" ok. well when i pet my dog he is soft and when he licks my hand it is wet and that is far more real to me than whatevers going on at an atomic level
what my atoms are doing is their fucking business man i'm busy trying to stop my dog from eating tissues directly out of the box
nuclei don't touch, but the nucleus is not the core of reality. reality is made of electrons dancing. reality is made of bonds.
you pet your dog and the atoms that are you brush up against the atoms that are him, and the electrons that are you press into the electrons that are him, and both of them change their movement.
electrons of course are not really particles and do not really move.
you pet your dog and the electron-orbitals of your skin overlap with the electron-orbitals of his fur, and both are changed by the contact. you are not made of little motes floating alone in a void. you are a single unfathomable chord formed of a trillion vibrations, and so is he. and the note you play is changing at every moment by what you touch and how you breathe, and so is his. and atoms do not really have edges, and to touch is to interact, and when you put your hand on your dog the universe does not know that you are separate. the song expands to hold you both.
the only news I want to read about what republicans are doing is their sudden mass extinction
stop telling me about their plans for 2024 if it doesn't end with "and then they die horribly in early january" and then that happens
