Hammer’s 1967 mummy movie, The Mummy’s Shroud as you can probably guess revolves around a group of intrepid archeologists in search of the lost tomb. The boy Pharaoh of Kah-To-Be. It’s a sacred place which they are warned must not be disturbed or else it will bring about grave consequences. For which of course they refuse the warnings, break into the tomb and disturb the Pharaohs resting place. Even though the Mummy Films can be are fun, exciting and thrilling, the formula unfortunately is losing its originality. "Same casing different face" as it were. The performances are quite good, especially in John Phillips character of Stanley Preston who plays a arrogant businessman who thrives on fame and disregards consequence or warnings. Perfect character for this film, and with a huge foreshadowing. But the star of the film I believe is of Roger Delgado who will later play "The master" in the original run of BBCs Doctor who. Delgado plays the keeper of the tomb. Who warns the explores of the consequences that will fall upon them. And later peruses them and plays a part in resurrecting The Mummy "Prem" the head slave of the boy Pharaoh, who becomes his instrument of death. The rest of the cast are reasonably good. But more importantly the mummy itself of Prem is quite well done, quite frightening and intimidating to behold in his design, and the death he deals out is more satisfying and surprising than i would expect to see, as people are crushed and thrown to their deaths with bright red blood oozing out of them. However that is where the main fault of The Mummy’s Shroud is that there isn’t enough of the mummy in it, and the main last standing characters don't interact With the mummy until the last 5 minutes of the movie, making the pacing of the movie unfortunately quite slow and dull at times. A guilty pleasure, in which I do tend to rewatch when I catch it on the TV, but no where near the glorious Hammer installments of the previous years, nor the original Universal Classic. Found these stamps while packing for our move back to the UK. Royal mail has done six film related issues over the years (the most recent being a Harry Potter one last September). These were issued in 2008 and celebrate those much loved (if not always high quality) British franchises - 'Carry On..' and 'Hammer Horror'. I think they did a good job of choosing a representative sample. If they'd just gone for the best the might have added 'Carry on up the Khyber' and 'The Devil Rides Out'.
