Film 235 of the year: PURSUIT TO ALGIERS, 1945. On a long, slow voyage across the Med, Holmes and Watson protect a young man from a group of brutal assassins. Ahhh, what a good, fun, film this is. Watson is the epitome of gentle geniality, Holmes is supremely masculine - there's a Yin/Yang, married couple aspect to their relationship in these Universal movies which is missing from other representations. The film gives us an intriguing glimpse at old fashioned, pre jet-age travel - not on-board a huge ocean liner, but on a small ship, where the close quarters allow for friendly intimacy, but at the same time breed a subtle claustrophobia. Pursuit To Algiers is a cleverly understated adventure, more akin to Charlie Chan than the grand Holmes.
