NaKniCroMo Day 4 (oops I missed it) - How long have you been knitting?
31 ½ years, plus a torturous stint when I was 10.
Day 5 - Who are your knitting heroes?
I’m Usually not one for hero worship. But if I had to pick, I’d say:
Elizabeth Zimmerman for her example of knitting NON-snobbery and non-judgmental acceptance. She would have loved for EVERYone to knit.
Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (the Yarn Harlot) for her humorous, practical treatment of the art, and
Cat Bordhi for her genius discovery of the moebius cast-on. (Not for her videos, however, as I find them almost impossible to follow.)
And yes I realize that these are probably cliché but I don’t eat sleep and dream knitting so I don’t know of many others.
Oh! Also Desirée Ross Bowman because, despite having fibro, she not only knits copiously for her family, but also churns out hats for the local homeless shelter like a madwoman. And that, to me, is a hero.
We didn’t get back home until 9 tonight, making it a 13-hour excursion. I’m too exhausted to knit or do anything except go to bed.
My youngest daughter doesn’t have pneumonia after all, thank God. She has a very severe sinus infection which is also affecting her ears. The doctor said that’s what has been causing the low-grade fever; the drainage from it has been causing the cough, and not being able to breathe right has most likely caused the fatigue/exhaustion.
I got to visit my eldest daughter Des (@hamncheezr) and her family for a few hours this afternoon after we were done at the doctor. Her younger child is just a year younger than my own youngest child so the 2 little girls got to spend time together. And while there, I finished a sock meant for Des so she soaked & put it on a blocker and got a new pair of socks out of the deal!
I get to go back up Sunday to do some tattoo work. The trip was safe and all in all a good day, though tiring!
My how times have changed but Mom hasn't
Today I was in big lots looking at a bag of candy. I tried to put it back on the shelf but it toppled out. So I gave it a little disgusted kick and took a step away. My 16 yod Veronica said “Mom!, No!” Exactly like you’d say it to a 2 year old.
That was hilarious all by itself. But what made it even more hilarious was this:
Ten years ago I was in Walmart with Des (who was 18 at the time), looking at cold medicines. I read probably 10 boxes and none of them had what I needed. So I just took the last box and threw it on the ground, and Des said, “Mom!, No!” Exactly the same way.
Still shocking my kids, one socially-unacceptable event at a time.
Throwback Thursday - summer 1987
I was 25 years old. My first baby Desirée was a year and a half. My sister Traci was 22 and about to get married.
I made all the dresses from a bolt of cotton Jersey that was printed sideways to the stretch (wrong) so I got the fabric for 88c a yard.
Hey guys! My sister is having an online spa party for her Arbonne products. They have some amazing products! And they range From make-up to baby products, men's body wash to skin care, shampoos to sun screen! It'd be great if you guys checked it out! (I just reblogged the links. : )
So far Sunday, or Des says she wouldn't give my luck to a monkey on a rock.
Got up dizzy. Missed church.
Made breakfast, filled my pill minder, took the pills that make me dizzy & nauseated.
Got dressed & went out to mow. The new mower had to be partially assembled. I’m sitting on a pallet by the driveway, partially assembling a mower, feeling dizzy and nauseated.
Needed pliers out of Wolf’s car, got stung by a wasp hiding up inside the door handle. Added Wasp and Hornet Spray to my to-get list.
Wolf came out and helped me get the mower put together. Noticed that the front wheels came set to the lowest setting. I set the back wheels to the highest setting, because the lowest setting burns the grass roots.
Discovered the only gas I had in a gas can was varnished. Bleh.
Went to the nearest gas statoin (3 miles away) for gas. Came home, put oil and gas in the mower
Started to mow, and discovered that the downward slope of the mower deck jams the front of the mower into the ground so it can’t be pushed.
Discovered that the front wheels are also adjustable. I can’t get the bolts loose.
It’s already the hottest part of the day. I have to dig for the right sockets. Wolf had to go to work. For now, I’m so done.
Gonna lie down for a nap with B (who is not feeling well today) and give it all a go later, when I really ought to be cooking dinner.
