The First Success Story : Harvey
Who the heck is Small Paws Big Hearts Sanctuary? It probably sounds cliche, "I've wanted to do this since I was a little girl" starter story, but it's every bit true. When I was old enough, I was a vet tech in high school, and lied about my age in order to qualify as a "junior volunteer" at a local shelter. I did presentations on puppy mills, animal abuse, and veterinarians all throughout school. It was always my dream to have my own rescue- to run it the way I want, to save every animal possible, and to find amazing homes for all of the abandoned animals. I always had all different types of animals as a kid, from dogs and cats to ferrets and bunnies. I didn't know WHEN or WHAT kind of animal I wanted to help, I just knew it was my first and only passion, what I wanted out of life. I didn't want a 'regular job' or have any dreams of becoming a CEO of a company...I just wanted to save the animals, every single one of them. And one day I was sick of it being a dream, and I made it happen. I didn't feel needed in the dog or cat rescue world because there are SO many people who already do it, however, the little furry friends are often forgotten and I knew that's where I was supposed to be. I contacted anyone I could and asked for tips and advice, made and still maintain my own website, and learned to screen and process every application and personally respond to every email. It's not easy or cheap, but then again, nothing worth having in life is. I was in petco picking up some last minute bedding, as the shipment was late from my favorite online website (more on that later) and saw a teddy bear hamster in a small tiny area marked "for adoption." So, of course I had to ask what the story was, and what I had to do to go about getting his big, furry, adorable self out of that tiny tank. I was told he was "beaten up by another male hamster" (which is rule 1. do not house any hamster together, especially Syrian/teddy bears, especially males) and almost died, losing an eye in the process. There was no way I was leaving him there. He came home with me, and since it was pretty magical he survived, and my love of magic shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I decided to name him Harvey. Harvey was adopted a few months later with a lovely family, and is now a happy ham, in a happy home, and I couldn't be more thrilled. And so Small Paws Big Hearts Sanctuary started.
