My problem with Hammond

Okay, so I’ve been trying to write Hammond fics for a few days and I always hit the same goddamn wall: WHO IS HAMMOND?

Maybe I’m just cynical, but I feel like Blizz relied so hard on the novelty of ‘hamster hero!!!’ that they forgot to give him a personality. The mech’s lines are all describing what’s literally happening with very little personal flair.

That was one of my problems with Brigitte: sprays aside, she was very generic, which was weird coming from the game equivalent of a saturday morning cartoon. Characters are wacky and exaggerated. Moira is my favourite example of this (probably because I love her so much): you could throw Moira in any situation and reasonably guess what she’d say or how she’d act. She’s cynically sardonic, hardened from years of being seen and shunned as an evil, unethical monster. But Brigitte? She’s... optimistic I guess? She’s an engineer like her dad but that’s not personality. She wants to be a hero / prove herself but that’s not personality either. Brave, maybe? Don’t get me wrong, I love Brigitte, but personality wise she just feels like a more bland Tracer. Tracer is optimistic and brave like Brig, but she’s spunky too, energetic, a little gigglebox. It feels like you could sum up every Overwatch character’s personality in a few words like that - every character except Brigitte. Like, I hate D.va to my core but I’d never accuse her of being boring.

But maybe I’m just being too hard on her. It could be that she’s supposed to be more downplayed because she’s supposed to be the ‘normal, everyday girl’ of the cast. But among a cast of incredible characters, I find a normal person too stale.

And here lies my problem with Hammond. Everyone else has a personality and Hammond, so far, doesn’t. Like, Jeff said he was 'adventurous' and that's about it. None of his voicelines (so far) reflect a personality, and the few that suggest more than literal description of current events are just... quips. Every goddamn character has quips. I'M GONNA BRING UP MOIRA AGAIN. You can glean everything you need to know about her from the 'I HEARD YOU' understood voiceline. I feel like I'm doing it a disservice by writing it out so plainly. The line is gorgeous. A sarcastic, hostile remark dripping with personality. Genevieve O'Reilly's fantastic inflection. The absolute antithesis of any other healer. This is good. Hammond bad. Bad monkey. SPEAKING OF WHICH-

WINSTON IS A MONKEY. But Winston is also a scientist. The point I’m almost making is that Winston is, yes, a goddamn gorilla, but he’s also a massive nerd and painfully awkward. You could make Winston a human and not change a single part of his personality. Hammond though, I have no clue what he’d be like. Some people say he’s a cute lil sweetheart, some people say he’s a little destructive thrillseeker, others say he’s an agent of chaos and probably working with Talon. That’s all just speculation because WE DON’T KNOW!

Don’t get me wrong, I think he does have a personality somewhere, and we’ll get to see it with his equipped voicelines, emotes and interactions with other dudes (these STILL aren’t on the PTR for some reason). But my word, it is REALLY annoying trying to think of dialogue for someone who usually speaks through an emotionless mech. Rant over.
