1852. Keeping Up
This is “Keeping Up.” I have come to eat tables.
I was visiting a friend the other day who is suffering. Oftentimes he acts in extreme ways, due to the suffering. It is a hard thing to understand.
This visit I brought him a loaf of bread and a bottle of lemonade, and we both sat down and ate and talked, and I watched him suffer while sitting and eating and talking.
Then a large pelican flew past, heading toward water.
I told my friend, It is hard to think about the philosophical when there is so much movement in the world.
I think I said this because my friend will think too much about what the events in a scene mean rather than what the movement of them means. For instance, he will look at that pelican flying toward water and think about what is internally driving it toward its destination, what does it need, how does it need it, etc. He will look so far past the movement---the physical act of a “thing” being “mobile”---that the movement will become invisible.
My friend, still suffering, smiled and said, I can’t catch up to anything that moves, which I think is my problem. My problem is keeping up.
I thought that made a lot of sense. So much sense that I thought I could feel his suffering for once. He showed me a painting he had recently tried his hand at and though I considered it “bad” I told him it was a “good start.” I thought of this as progress in our relationship to understanding each other. I thought everything was very interesting...
