Envisioning Information: Notes
Envisioning Information: Edward R. Tufte.
This reading covered a variety of design strategies that help sharpen information on paper or video screens. Methods that’s were used contributed to different dimensions and plane surfaces that are represented and the density of these data. Disrespect for audience can and will leak through and therefore damaging communication. It should be clear and simple, easy to read. Unequal intervals of spacing, whitespace in design forces attention towards the intentions that almost create unity within the whole piece.
“The greater variety and distinction among respective background units, the clearer becomes the comprehension of a character as an individual expression or sign” over the whole reading I found this quite interesting once I read it, and it is something that just made me think “TRUE” – so I thought I thought I may as well keep it here in my notes to look back on.
Designing for Interaction: Dan Saffer
Notes on Design research and brainstorming:
What to look for & how to record them:
Focus on things that are important to specific activities and environment spaces that activities are held, interaction between people and objects as well as spaces.
Using Hunt statements- a design tool to help narrow down research and be able to back it up with a “why”
Patterns and Phenomena:
Main thing to look for are patterns whether behavior, stories or actions/ ideas that reoccur. There are simple rules to identify the differences between a pattern and phenomena. Phenomena are also interesting as well under unusual behaviours or methods of working
1. See or hear it once = Phenomena. Write it down.
2. See or hear it twice = coincidence or pattern emerging. Write it down.
3. See or hear it three times = It’s a Pattern. Write it down.
Field notes:
Recorded: Name of researcher/Day/time & place where research is taking place.
Helpful for later when comes to referencing.
Other important stuff: Exact quotes and tone, sketches of location along with comments and details.
As designers we need to shape and give meaning to the data we collect or else it will be useless.
Research is best done in groups or with at least another person so that ideas are able to bounce off one another.
final study
for my final study i combined the use of the knife to cut and the heat gun to show the transition through the material.
Summary: During this project I learnt about the different natures of different types of wood through my study of balsa. I found it interesting because of its anti thesis nature to what most consider to be wood. Exploiting these differences through the project was intriguing. Learning how far you can push materials is satisfying.
Project one summery
For project one of DSDN111 the main ideas that I tried to portray through my models were asymmetrical balance, contrast and a figure ground relationship. The windows that I created in my models show contrast and asymmetrical balance through positive and negative space, I found that by opening my models up in this way they were a lot more dynamic and made a very interesting attribute. All three of my models were created with the intent of displaying shadows that capture the viewers attention, showing a visual ground figure relationship.
