final study

for my final study i combined the use of the knife to cut and the heat gun to show the transition through the material. 

Summary: During this project I learnt about the different natures of different types of wood through my study of balsa. I found it interesting because of its anti thesis nature to what most consider to be wood. Exploiting these differences through the project was intriguing. Learning how far you can push materials is satisfying.

for the drawing part of the assignment i wanted to do something abstract to show parts of the material which may have not been seen otherwise. 

i used gauche paint with a ruling pen and a paintbrush. in particular i liked the contrast being shown.

working towards my final iterations. really like the small squares removed to show the chequered pattern.

Further developement. using the knife to cut parts out to reveal different parts of the wood, trying to understand the material further to get an interesting surface.

Blog post up

for this project i have chosen wood as my material. in particular i wanted to focus on balsa wood as i find the softness intriguing. 

my early experiments on the balsa were simple but still yielded some interesting results. in particular the details of the wood when burnt, and that the wood is so soft you can cut with a knife.
