World Teachers’ Day recognizes educational contributions made by teachers worldwide. This 1820s handbell was donated to the museum in 1972 and was used by the donor’s great-grandmother in a Virginia school room. Bells like this are symbolic of the one-room school education received by most students from the 19th century into the early 20th century. The bell would announce the beginning of classes and recess.
