JUDY GARLAND & BARBRA STREISAND perform Get Happy / Happy Days Are Here Again on the Judy Garland Show
man. Noel got so unlucky with the timing of Stop Crying Your Heart Out, like he wrote this beautiful duet, a back and forth between him and Liam that sounds just so arrestingly real, it’s like you’re in the room witnessing a heart-to-heart between them, the back and forth of “Why’re you scared?” —‘I’m not scared.’ “You’ll never change what’s been and gone.” And then them both singing the chorus, almost this sort of resolution of their tension, one (Noel) giving way to Liam in this argument and joining him, singing the chorus along with him, it’s such a Noel and Liam song. It’s them. That’s them! And he wrote it like 3 months before Liam’s voice started to fail, and this song specifically became so hard for him that it’s unlistenable at times.
Unfortunately it just doesn’t hit the same on the record, because it feels so much more real when Noel is not a compressed backing vocal, a voice in Liam’s head, but an active participant in this back and forth with his brother. Also Noel doesn’t sing the chorus on the album.
Some of the best and most moving performances of this song are from the European summer tour of 2002 and of course the T In The Park Festival gig which I think is the best performance of it. After that, Liam’s voice went south and never recovered, what with the strain at the end of the European dates and then all the drama of the American tour (‘You and I for the last time’ indeed…). We never got to hear it properly again, and I’m sure Noel would’ve liked there to be more good performances of this one, given what a personal song it seems to be to him.
