Fun facts about handmines that may or may not be intended
Their name is a pun on “landmines”
They are the precursors of the Daleks, already displaying a half-Dalek, half-humanoid form while Davros is still a child
Like a hybrid
And if that’s true it suggests the Daleks might be inevitable; that they are already in motion. Fascism comes whether space Hitler lives or he dies. All the Doctor can do is to try and moderate it, by begging it for mercy
But maybe that argument is a hybrid in itself; maybe Davros was the Magician’s Apprentice and the Witch’s Familiar. Knowing the Doctor will draw this conclusion for themselves, knowing it means one day Davros cheats death. A child runs into the centre of a minefield, grinning on the inside, biding his time

The handmines are rising when we see them, asking if they are inevitable. Rising like a question, and the question is in the future. But it’s our Doctor who’s there and looking at them. Deep down we know that question is already here
