CAUSE WDYM HE PAINTED THE PORTRAIT?!??!?!
Did not take to Clara for a long time because she was Not Amy, but on rewatch she is pretty good from the get go.
The ideal Doctor/companion/Master dynamic is one where they inevitably become prison buddies.
So... i went into TwelveClara with an open mind, and even a tiny bit of excitement, since a lot of what I'd read about them on here sounded rather cute to me, what with the "Yes ma'am" bit. I tend to enjoy that sort of dynamic, and i missed a Doctor with a romantic cant. But.
I've only watched "Deep Breath" so far... and holy shit, they are FRIGHTENINGLY dysfunctional, and not at all the positive, fun power dynamic I thought I was in for, even if they're trying to be cute with it. I truly think Moffat has a real issue with writing ships that he THINKS are cute and power-game-y/kinky... but as with River, are really actually deeply questionable when it comes to consent! (The scene with the broken wrist being the example that springs to mind with those two.) Just... the end of "Deep Breath", the way Clara treats his "no thanks, I don't want to be touched like that" as optional and up to her (much like Amy did)... That was basically a "Fuck you, I don't care what you want, what I want is what's important!"
"I DON'T THINK YOU GET A VOTE"?! WHATTT?! HE DOESN'T GET A VOTE ON WHAT HAPPENS TO HIS OWN BODY?! THE ONE HE'S ONLY JUST LEARNING TO FEEL COMFORTABLE INSIDE AS IT IS?!
wtf is it w/ Moffat writing rapey females power-tripping and manipulating the Doctor as "adorbs and fun"?! SO PROBLEMATIC I CANNOT. And don't get me wrong. I ship a lot of very problematic ships... but it is SO messed up as a writing pattern; much like, for me, the patterns Joss Whedon listed as grandly romantic in BtVS between a manipulative chi-mo and a teenager! Like, you're gonna stand by that? And here, especially for a character who has huge psychological trauma and is incredibly emotionally messed up and confused... The Doctor Does Not Deserve to be a victimized even further! He needs time NOT being victimized to actually figure himself out! Figure out what he wants, if ANYTHING! Yeah, he definitely has his own issues with consent... but he's never going to improve with crap like this happening to him all the time!
Also, just because he's the (much) older one doesn't mean that he's the problematic part of this particular dynamic! (Tho he is kind of in this version, at least so far, I will have to admit. Because he would never have just left other people he loves alone in a dangerous, life-threatening situation to just live or die while he goes off to do whatever. But that then sets up an even worse dynamic with Clara later, where she's like, "If you don't care about my wellbeing, i don't care about your boundaries!" UGH!)
I honestly would've been fine if i was told it would be like this; like the Master/Doctor dynamic. There's no lying about what that is, and if you're into it you're admitting to what it is first. What i don't get is why i got so much false advertising on here, because i don't get how ppl think this ship (much like River abusing Eleven) is adorable and cute?! I mean, again, i definitely don't have a problem with questionable ships, given i ship Spuffy, as well as Clark Kent/Lex Luthor!!! And all of my ships are all some brand of slightly effed up... but what i don't get is people who pretend like their ship is so incredibly cute and wholesome! Fine if you like it, but first you have to admit they're problematic and you're good with it! Because it also goes both ways!!!! The way he clearly dislikes her mentality & the way she comes at things, and definitely is spending a lot of time either insulting her, or tolerating her, or just relegating her to less important, and doing things to her he would never do to Rose (like leaving her to a possible death to save his own butt! In that instance he would have definitely handed over or left the sonic with Rose... and immediately done everything within his power to break through that door bodily to get to her!)!!!!
This is just unhealthy, and I don't know why i didn't hear that part of it right off. It leaves me worrying that if he really does love her in some way... then what does that say about how damaged he has become? Because he wouldn't even want her to be in discomfort like she was by his hands, in another life; fearing for her life and having to scramble to save her own butt. Much less being the one who put her in a position where she could die! Not even in the middle of being all confused because of an extremely weird regeneration! If he really loved her in a healthy way, she would be his ultimate priority just like Rose was, no matter what state he was in!
I'm honestly let down and kind of feel betrayed by what i feel is false advertising in here, and now i have a very bad taste in my mouth going forward. I'm sure i'll get a lot of hate-mail in this one for this opinion, and i won't be replying, because i'm not big on arguments online anymore (they're simply not worth the energy) but i'm now firmly on the side of NOTP, here!
"Doctor? What are you doing?" Sparks and swearing, or at least what sounded like swearing echoed under the main floor.
"Trying to incorporate a new method of working to the linguistic process of the Time and Relative Dimension in Space."
"…what?"
He repeated, exasperated.
"I iterated, I am endeavoring myself with the technicalities of the language network of the time and relative space situated in the cosmos. A thing you desserting cerebrum should do as well, you never ponder before proclaiming." She stared, not understanding why he thought his answer made any sense.
"Are yoooou having a stoke?"
This time, he sounded angry. Well, angrier than his usual grumpy. "What the underground of suffering do you imply?"
"Doctor, I have no idea what you’re doing but I think you’re making it worse."
Il ne put s’empêcher de grogner. « N’importe quoi. C’est juste que je comprends pas pourquoi maintenant je peux mettre qu’une seule langue source ! ».
She couldn’t help the surprised look that showed on her face. He tinkered once again with the TARDIS, or at least that’s what Clara concluded since she still couldn’t see him from where she was standing. The doctor always warned her against getting close to the heart of the TARDIS. She did try once to ask him why but the forlorn look he gave her in return was enough of an answer to not pry further.
「何これ」と言いました。
But this time would have to be an exception. The TARDIS roared and flames sprung up from under the deck. Clara rushed to the ladder, trying to get to the Doctor as quickly as possible. On her way, she grabbed on the dresser the extinguisher he used as a coat rack. He lost the rack in 1923 when he argued with the TARDIS about cable management in the 12th dining room. She never told him where she hid it and he never asked her, too proud to ask for her help.
"Клара, где-"
Before he could finish his thought, Clara removed the security lock on the extinguisher and covered him in foam. She then got to work and managed to tame the flames coming from the control panel. Once everything was under control, she stared at him, her expression a mix of worry and repressed anger.
"WHAT are you doing?"
"What are YOU doing? I’m soaking now and those flames just meant I was on the right track!"
She was about to answer but stopped suddenly. She couldn’t help but start grinning. He looked dumbly at her, one eyebrow raised. "Doctor. Is this an accent I hear?" she said, amused.
He just stood there, baffled. But he couldn’t help the sarcasm dripping from his voice.
"Of course it is, I haven’t gotten Scottish in the last ten seconds."
She shook her head, her smile getting bigger.
"I know you’re Scottish. But you got an accent. As if you weren’t a native speaker. You pronounce words like a Scottish, you sound Scottish but you got an accent!"
He frowned and looked at the panel again.
"Must have turned off the autotune", he whispered to himself, annoyed.
Her smile was getting so big that her eyes almost looked normal sized.
"Don’t tell me the TARDIS usually fixes your accent! Does that mean you actually speak English to me? She isn’t translating your language to mine?"
He almost looked bashful, his usual confidence tinted with a tiny pinch of self-consciousness. "Well of course. I did tell you I spoke five billion languages".
She rolled her eyes, "Which is an obvious lie but I didn’t know you actually spoke to me! I was so sure you were using the TARDIS for translation. That’s why you can make accents and speak foreign languages, the TARDIS doesn’t actually translate what you’re saying!".
The secret was out. He never meant for Clara to know that. He knew he shouldn’t have tried to add that stupid AI feature everyone was talking about. But sometimes the TARDIS was feeling petty and that’s why he almost got executed in 1554 France for talking to the king with "peasant-like and blasphemous words". She translated his words but not quite. And his formal old French was definitively not good enough to not use the TARDIS’ translation. At least that AI feature would have made his words formal, even when she was sabotaging his attempts at being respectful (but honestly, when wasn’t he? People were just easily offended).
Clara got his attention again when she said with indignation in her voice "wait, does that mean you can choose to disable her translation tool? Doctor, I studied French for ten years for my literary studies! Why couldn’t I speak French in France? You said you couldn’t disable it!".
He rolled his eyes as well.
"Because I didn’t want you to embarrass me with your mock French accent"
"It IS a real French accent! You don’t get to tell me it’s not when you use autotune"
Touché.
He sighed, his eyes shooting daggers at the TARDIS who was subtly scoffing.
"I’m going to fix the autotune. And you get to speak French next time we go to France", she scream-whispered a delighted yes at that. "But you never mention my accent again."
She pondered for a second.
"Deal."
He recovered his tools and meant to go back to the panel when she added,
"It’s a shame though. You sound very cute that way".
He would never admit his cheeks got a bit red at that comment.
He got back to work, assessing the damage. Before focusing on his repairs, he made a mental note to himself to never go to France with Clara ever again.
"Under the Lake" Doctor Who: Series 9, Episode 3 (2015)
For Clara:
At least in terms of the ‘real’ Clara we first meet in Bells of St John, she is the only (that I can think of) main companion that the Doctor hunts down and recruits.
I see where this is going. And I know what you mean because he did really look for her. But then he also did kind of try to find Amy back and asked Rose twice did a lot to convince Charley to let him save her and take her along. So I’ll just put it to poll whether this was unique. I don’t refuse arguments based on uniqueness but someone already mentioned how any times he called Clara. So if enough people think this is unique then I’ll add this as a supplement to that argument. If it’s not seen as unique we’ll just keep the fact he called her so many times trying to get her to come with as originally submitted. Looking for 41% yes.
Were the Doctor’s Efforts to recruit Clara unique?
Yes
No
Again, I don’t refuse arguments for uniqueness. The effort the Doctor put in to get Clara to come is still significant even if the “this was unique” part doesn’t get added to the argument itself. This poll is JUST to determine whether or not we say it was unique. Not a justification to vote zero when his efforts do get mentioned.
