I got rejected.
Absolutely, painfully rejected. For a long time now, I've had a huge crush on Hands. I thought we were close and maybe even liked me back, but that was just a delusion.
I knew Hands through work. He drove in races and I worked on his car. We were together a lot and have gotten to know each other over the years. Better than any other racer I knew.
I asked him out, just a small date. The worst thing he could say is no, right?
Well, I got a no and a half. Hands was never vocal, often preferring to grunt in response to things. That's what I got. A shake of the head with a low and bothered grunt.
It was the next day since all of that. Of course, we had a race.
I sat in my old car, looking in the mirror. I knew it would be awkward, but I had to go. Maybe he wouldn't say anything? Hopefully.
While getting out of my car, I thought about going back home to call in sick. Maybe even say there's a family emergency I have to help with.
But I can't, I need this job and I need the money. I have to just go in and deal with it.
With a deep breath, I went through the employee only door. The garage was just as loud as ever while everyone was working on cars and getting ready for the race. Teams all over were fixing wheels, engines, and even paint jobs.
There was my teams car. Hands car.
They were rushing around. Dave working on the wheels, Sam working on the paint, and Linda was head first in the engine.
"Need any help?" I asked Linda, looking around to see if Hands was nearby. I didn't see him.
"Some." She came up, wiping her hands on an old rag. "That piston is being a bitch."
"I can help with that." I chuckled, going to lean in under the hood just to be stopped.
"What did he say?"
"What?" I looked at her.
"Hands. What did he say?" I unfortunately had told her I was going to ask him out. She seemed more excited for us than I even did.
"Oh..." My face fell and I didn't have to say anymore.
"He said no? That bitch."
"Its okay." I shook my head, looking down to avoid her eyes. "Really. I mean we're coworkers, it would have been too hard."
"No, it wouldn't." She crossed her arms.
"Can we talk about this later? He should be here soon."
With an angry look on her face, Linda nodded. Finally moving on from my failure to go back to the car.
It felt good. Now focusing on work and finally able to ignore my let down. That was until Hands showed up. I expected him too, its not like we can have a race without our driver.
He stood tall, towering over everyone. I always thought he stood out and it's easy to see why. The man was huge and to me, that was part of his charm.
My eyes quickly moved down when he noticed me looking. This is already awkward, I would rather not make it any worse.
"Get your ass in the car." I looked over my shoulder to see Linda slap him on the arm. From how long he was standing there, he must have been starring at something.
I kept my head down, looking to the perfectly silver engine as Hands went past me to get in the driver's seat.
After a few last minute fixes, I was finally done and ready for the race. I reached up to the hood and pushed it down shut.
That's when I caught his eyes. He was staring at me. Like deep in the zone, staring through the windshield. I stood completely frozen for a long moment, only looking right back at him. Hands blinked before looking away, tilting his head down to the steering wheel.

It was the exact same the next few weeks. He would stare and we would never speak.
While coming in to work today, there were coffees out for my team. Someone bought them for us. The others had theirs and I took the last one left that had my name on the side of it. It had whipped cream on top and looked delicious while the other cups my coworkers were drinking from looked plain.
"What's happening between you two?" Linda came up to me with a raised brow.
"Who?" I could hardly even say the word before she spoke again.
"Hands. Who do you think?" Her arms crossed over her chest.
"Nothing. You know what happened."
"Yet he stares at you nonstop, he gets us crappy coffee, gives you the easy jobs. I thought you said he said no?"
"Well, it was more like a grunt." I shrugged, "but it was a no."
"Then why do you get princess treatment?"
"I..." My voice trailed off. Why was I getting princess treatment? It's not like Hands to show favoritism. "I don't know."
"Then figure it out. Talk to him for once."
"Fine." I groaned, already feeling awkward before saying a word. "I'll talk to him."
Linda nodded, leaving without another word and going back to the car.
Moments later, there he was. Hands had come back and was now holding breakfast boxes for us. He treats us well even though I know they're just microwave meals from the break room.
He came out, putting the small boxes on the counter. Each one was the same, all besides one. It was bigger. Not by much but still bigger. On a closer look, not only did it have my name on the side but it was also my favorite meal from there.
"Hey Hands?" I spoke up, pausing when he turned to look at me. "Can I speak to you for a moment? I'm private?"
With a nod, he lead the way. Hands occasionally glanced back to know I was following him as he brought me to a familiar spot. It was a VIP area that was empty. There wasn't a race at the moment so nobody would be there or in any seats.
Once inside, he closed the door behind me and went to sit on one of the comfy couches.
"So." I muttered, sitting across from him. "You um, you've been treating me differently?"
I sounded completely unsure while speaking to him. I thought he didn't like me at all but here he is getting all my favorites.
He only tilted his head with a question in his eyes.
"You know, the coffee, the food? You get my favorites."
"Because I know your favorites."
"But you go out of your way to get them."
There was a moment of silence. We only sat, looking into each other eyes.
"I think I love you." His words came out in a whisper. I didn't hear Hands talk much at all and I damn well sure did not expect him to say that.
"What?"
"You asked me out and I got scared." He looked away from me. I could see a shyness in him that I'm sure nobody has ever seen before. "I've never had such feelings."
After another moment, I laughed. He looked up at me with confusion but I didn't stop.
"You mean all this time you liked me?" I giggled, wiping the tears of joy that were starting in the corner of my eyes.
He nodded as an adorable blush spread across his cheeks.
"Yes." I said.
"Yes?"
"If this is your way of asking me out, then I say yes."
