Hanging Flume Overlook on the Dolores River in far western Colorado. The Montrose Placer Mining Company built the flume in the 1880s to facilitate gold mining. Some sections of the flume remain attached to the canyon wall, although much of the wood has vanished. First time to visit this river and canyons was on a trip a few years back. The hanging flume section on the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers is a very interesting river trip! Built in the 1880s, this flume carried water for hydraulic gold mining. It cost a million dollars to build, but only operated for 3 years before being abandoned. Apparently the gold was too difficult to recover. Bummer. We are OPEN 9am to 8pm everyday for limited in store browsing and our website is always open for orders for shipping or curbside.
