Hangout Series: Jessica Jackley Chats With Us About The Past, Present, and Future of Social Entrepreneurship
In the past ten years, the use of entrepreneurship to effect social change has entered the mainstream. Jessica Jackley was a pioneer in the field of social entrepreneurship long before it had a name.
We recently hosted a hangout to discuss social entrepreneurship with Jessica -- who is a backer on our platform and advisor to our company. The incredible response from the community was a testament to Jessica’s remarkable career and the growing swarm of creativity and energy centered around this topic.
Given that social entrepreneurship is still a relatively new and evolving concept, Jessica kicked off the hangout by giving us her definition. “Entrepreneurs embrace the fact that there are many ways to solve a problem and seek to measure and hypothesize as to which path is the most efficient. Social entrepreneurs apply that mental dexterity and desire to quantify results to create social impact. It is more of a ‘how’ than a ‘what’ -- social entrepreneurs are defined by how they solve problems, how they pursue your goals, and how they structure their work.”
As the Cofounder and former CMO of Kiva, Cofounder and former CEO of Profounder, and current advisor at Collaborative Fund and Visiting Practitioner at Stanford University’s Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society, Jessica’s career has spanned non-profit, for-profit, venture capital, and academia -- with each opportunity affording her new tools and perspective on how to solve pressing social problems.
Like with all entrepreneurial careers, the first thing you have to do is identify the problem and get passionate about being a powerful force in creating a solution. “When I ask college students, who say they want to be social entrepreneurs, what they want to do often they don’t know. Well, that’s sort of like saying I want to win an Olympic gold medal, but I haven’t chosen my sport yet.” For Jessica, the driving force behind her career has been a desire to empower others through entrepreneurship and expand access to capital. Jessica advised those interested in social entrepreneurship to start by asking themselves, “ What do you want to get done in the world? And, what is the most efficient way to do that?”. And she urged us to remember the limitations of technology, “It can both connect us more quickly and readily but it can also create its own barriers. It is not a replacement for hanging out and spending time with that person."
When asked about the future of social entrepreneurship, Jessica shared her vision for the future, “social entrepreneurs are ahead of the curve in terms of thinking about impact and how to measure it, but in the future it won’t be so divided and the lines will begin to blur… It’s a tax code that differentiates business models. There is an opportunity, and need, for businesses across all sectors to begin to think about their impact and the power that they have to bring about meaningful change.”
