daniela's pov
the first thing i noticed were her eyes — big and brown, with small flicks of green that showed when the light hit just right. then her nose, a little upturned, like she was about to say something but hadn’t decided what yet. and the yankees hat. classic.
she had this small, nervous smile as the other girls swarmed her — a crooked grin that deepened into a dimple on the left side. freckles dusted across her nose and cheeks, the kind you only notice once you’re really looking.
but i wasn’t really looking. seriously, i wasn’t. she’s just another trainee — like lara or samara. just more competition. that’s all.
“so, dutch girl, what’s your actual name?” adéla asked, leaning forward a little, curious.
“hannah,” she said. simple, quick, like she’d already had to answer that question a hundred times.
out of the corner of my eye, i caught iliya giving hannah a once-over — slow, deliberate — then looking away with an unimpressed expression.
inside, the attention briefly shifted to celeste — polite smile, quiet voice, the kind of girl who made people speak softer around her. sweet, but easy to fade into the background.
hannah, though? not so much.
ten minutes in, she was sitting at the kitchen island with megan, spoon-deep in a tub of ice cream someone had left half-melted on the counter.
“i’m just saying,” hannah said, pointing her spoon for emphasis, “if this is american ice cream, i’m suing. it tastes like high fructose corn syrup and red 40.”
megan snorted so hard she nearly dropped her phone. “welcome to the land of the free.”
lara walked in just in time to catch that and rolled her eyes. “you literally just got here.”
“and i already want to go home,” hannah shot back, deadpan. “but i can’t, because i unpacked one shoe and that feels like a commitment.”
“come on!” emily suddenly grabbed hannah’s hand, practically bouncing on her heels. “roomies have to set up the room together. that’s, like, the rule.”
hannah barely had time to put down her spoon before being dragged down the hall, laughing as emily talked a mile a minute about fairy lights and wall decor.
i watched them disappear up the stairs — emily chattering, hannah just nodding along, still smiling. the kind of smile that made you wonder if she ever actually got nervous about anything.
lara nudged me with her elbow. “i already love her. she’s gonna fit right in.”
“yeah,” i said, even though part of me wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.

hannah's pov
emily was already knee-deep in a pile of throw pillows when i walked into what was apparently our room. the walls were covered in photos, sticky notes, and collectible red bull cans.
so, yeah. definitely emily’s room.
“okay, so you can take that bed!” she said, pointing to the one by the window. “it gets the best light, and i already cleared a drawer for you because i’m nice like that.”
i set my bag down and grinned. “you’re kinda terrifying.”
she gasped dramatically, grinning. “i like you already.”
“so… what’s your thing?” she asked, leaning against the bedframe.
“my thing?” i raised an eyebrow.
“like, are you a dancer, singer, or visual? i mean, obviously you’re a good visual,” she added, giving me a once-over grin.
i felt blush creeping up my cheeks. "thank you. i think i'm a dancer. i've been doing it forever."
her eyes lit up. “ohhh. me too. like… full-on, can’t-stop, can’t-even-walk-after rehearsals kind of dancer. megan too. and dani.”
“wait…” i blinked. “dani? the one with the dyed blonde curly hair?”
“…yeah,” emily said, smirking.
i felt my ears heat up. okay, focus, hannah, stay cool. totally cool.
emily suddenly clapped her hands, grinning wide. “alright, lara! megan! lexie! ezrela! come here, quick!”
the girls sprinted in, already cackling. emily slipped behind me and locked the door. “someone’s taken a special interest in ms. avanzini,” she announced, dramatically looking at me.
i froze, trying to act unaffected, but the heat creeping up my neck betrayed me. “oh, hilarious,” i muttered, pretending to rearrange a throw pillow while my ears probably looked like stop signs.
“i’m kidding,” emily said, smirking, “but seriously… you better keep up in training, or you’re dead to me.”
i shot her a look. “oh, don’t worry. i plan to make everyone question their life choices within the first week.”
then she lunged at me and tackled me onto the carpet.
"what the fuck—" i gasped, half-laughing, half-panicked.
"sleep with one eye open tonight baas."
before i could respond, the door creaked open and dani stuck her head in.
“uh… hey,” she said softly, glancing between me and emily, who was still grinning like she’d started a storm.
“hey,” i said, trying to sound casual while my ears definitely weren’t cooperating.
dani hesitated, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. “so… uh, do you… want to go for a walk? like, around the property? get some air?”
i blinked at her, surprised at how nervous she sounded. “walk? yeah… sure. yeah, let’s go.”
she gave a small, almost relieved smile. “cool. just… thought it might be nice to, you know, talk or whatever.”
i nodded, trying to keep it chill. “yeah, i get that. fresh air, chat… very civilized.”
as we stepped out, the other girls’ laughter and chatter faded behind us, leaving the two of us in the quiet, sunlit driveway. it was awkward, but in a way that made me… curious.
dani looked back at me, the moonlight illuminating her silhouette.
summary: four years later. everything has changed. everything is perfect.

hannah's pov
"i'm just saying, that last set was unnecessary," megan groaned, stretching in the parking lot.
"you literally asked for an extra set," sophia pointed out.
"past me is an idiot."
"present you isn't much better," i said.
"rude."
dani was leaning against our car, scrolling through her phone, looking unfairly good in her workout set — black leggings and a sports bra, hair pulled back in a ponytail. twenty-five and somehow even more beautiful than the day i met her.
"you ready?" she asked, looking up at me.
"yeah. we should get back."
"oh right," megan said, grinning. "you two have to relieve the babysitter."
"her mom is not a babysitter," sophia said. "she's his grandmother."
"same thing."
"it's really not."
dani rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. "we'll see you guys tomorrow?"
"yep. studio at ten," sophia confirmed.
"perfect. love you losers."
we said our goodbyes and got in the car. the drive home was quiet, comfortable. dani's hand found mine on the console automatically.
"you think he was good for my mom?" she asked.
"are you kidding? she probably spoiled him the entire time we were gone."
"true." she smiled. "she's obsessed with him."
"everyone's obsessed with him."
"because he's perfect."
"because he looks exactly like you."
she squeezed my hand. "he has your smile though."
"he's six months old. he doesn't have anyone's smile yet."
"yes he does. i see it every time he looks at you."
i brought her hand to my lips, kissing her knuckles. "you're being sappy."
"i'm allowed to be sappy about our son."
our son.
even after six months, those words still made my chest feel too full.

daniela's pov
home was a two-bedroom apartment in west hollywood. not huge, but perfect for us. we'd moved in right after we got married, and when i got pregnant, we converted the second bedroom into a nursery.
light blue walls. white crib. a rocking chair in the corner that hannah had picked out. stuffed animals everywhere because everyone we knew kept buying them.
it was perfect.
we walked in, and my mom was on the couch, reading a magazine.
"mija!" she stood up, smiling. "how was the gym?"
"good. tiring." i hugged her. "thank you for watching him, mami."
"of course. he was an angel. slept the whole time."
"really?" hannah asked, setting down her gym bag.
"well, mostly. he woke up once for a bottle, but went right back down." my mom grabbed her purse. "he should sleep for another hour at least."
"perfect. thank you so much, ana," hannah said, hugging her.
"anytime. you know i love spending time with my grandson." she kissed both our cheeks. "i'll see you girls this weekend, yes?"
"yes. dinner at our place," i confirmed.
"perfect. love you both."
"love you too."
she left, and the apartment was quiet again.
i looked at hannah. she was already looking at me, smiling.
"wanna go check on him?" she asked.
"obviously."
we walked down the hallway to the nursery, opening the door as quietly as possible.
the room was dim, blackout curtains drawn. the white noise machine hummed softly in the corner.
and there, in his crib, was our baby boy.
joaquin.
he was on his back, one tiny fist curled near his face, sleeping peacefully. he had my dark hair, my olive skin, my nose. but when he opened his eyes — which were usually squeezed shut because he was always sleeping or crying or eating — they were this beautiful mix of brown and green.
six months old and already the most perfect thing i'd ever seen.
hannah wrapped her arms around me from behind, resting her chin on my shoulder. we just stood there, watching him sleep, both of us silent.
"we made him," i whispered.
"you made him," hannah corrected softly. "i just... provided moral support."
"you did more than that."
"still. you did all the hard work." she kissed my temple. "you're amazing."
i turned in her arms, facing her. "we're amazing."
"yeah. we are."
i kissed her, soft and slow, then turned back to watch joaquin.
our son.
four years ago, i was twenty-one and falling in love with my best friend. scared, confused, not knowing what the future held.
now i was twenty-five. married. a mom. living a life i couldn't have imagined back then.
and it was perfect.
every single part of it.
joaquin stirred slightly, making a small sound, and both hannah and i froze.
but he just shifted, settling back into sleep.
we watched him for another minute, then quietly left the nursery, closing the door gently behind us.
"you know what's crazy?" hannah said as we walked back to the living room.
"what?"
"we have a whole human. like, we're responsible for a whole person."
"i know. terrifying, right?"
"absolutely terrifying." she pulled me onto the couch with her. "but also... really fucking cool."
"yeah. it is."
i curled into her side, her arm around me, both of us just existing in the quiet of our home.
four years. so much had changed.
but some things stayed the same.
like the way she held me. the way she looked at me. the way she loved me.
and now we had joaquin.

THE END
━━━━━━━━━━
author's note:
thank you for reading "huh." — this journey from dream academy trainees to KATSEYE to married moms has been incredible to write. i hope you loved reading it as much as i loved creating it
the bathroom. the dye. the way hannah had looked at me — or maybe the way i'd looked at her. the way we'd leaned in without deciding to. the way our lips had barely touched and my entire world had tilted sideways.
and then alex called.
thank god alex called.
right?
i was sitting on my bed, staring at my phone. alex had texted me good morning like he always did, with a heart emoji and everything. he was perfect. supportive. kind. he loved me.
i loved him.
i did.
so why did i feel like i was lying every time i said it lately?
manon walked in, towel wrapped around her hair. "you good?"
"yeah," i said quickly. "just tired."
she gave me a look. "you've been 'just tired' for like three days."
"jet lag," i lied.
"we've been back for months, dani."
i didn't answer. she sighed, sitting on her bed across from me.
"is it about alex?"
my stomach twisted. "what? no. why would it be about alex?"
"i don't know," she said, shrugging. "you just seem... off. like, more than usual."
"i'm fine," i said. "seriously."
she didn't look convinced, but she let it go. "okay. well, we're all going to the store later if you wanna come."
"yeah, maybe."
she left, and i was alone again.
i pulled up my photos, scrolling back without meaning to. there were so many of hannah. us at the airport. us in korea. us in the practice room, sweaty and exhausted and laughing. her asleep on the plane, head on my shoulder. the two of us in matching hoodies that sophia had bought us as a joke.
we looked... close. really close.
too close?
i locked my phone and tossed it on the bed.
this was stupid. i wasn't— i wasn't gay. i had a boyfriend. i'd always liked boys. i'd never even thought about girls like that before.
except.
except maybe i had? but not in a way that meant anything. like, noticing when a girl was pretty wasn't the same as liking girls. everyone did that. it was normal. i could think hannah was beautiful and it didn't mean anything.
it didn't.
the way my heart raced when she touched me — that was just because we were close. best friends. that's what best friends did. they got butterflies around each other sometimes. that was normal.
right?
i thought about alex. about the way he kissed me. the way he held me. it was nice. safe. comfortable.
but when i thought about hannah—
no.
no, i wasn't doing this.
i grabbed my phone again and opened my messages with alex.
me: i miss you
he responded almost immediately.
alex: miss you too baby. call later?
me: yeah ❤️
i stared at the heart emoji for a long time.
it felt like a lie.
but i sent it anyway.
━━━━━━━━━━
i spent the rest of the morning avoiding hannah.
not obviously. just... strategically. when she was in the kitchen, i was upstairs. when she came into the living room, i suddenly had to check something in my room. when megan asked if i wanted to come hang out with her and hannah, i said i had to call alex.
which i did. we facetimed for an hour and it was fine. good, even. he told me about his classes, i told him about the house. he made me laugh. i made him laugh.
it was easy.
so why did it feel like i was performing?
when we hung up, i felt worse than before.
i sat on my bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to sort through the mess in my head.
the thing is, i'd never really thought about it before. like, i'd kissed boys, dated boys, loved boys. and it was fine. it was what you did. what you were supposed to do.
but sometimes, late at night, i'd wonder. not about anything specific. just... wonder.
like in high school, when my friend sarah got a girlfriend and i felt this weird pang of something i couldn't name. i told myself it was just jealousy — that i wanted a relationship like that, not that i wanted that specifically.
or the time i watched portrait of a lady on fire and cried for reasons i didn't totally understand.
or the way i'd felt when lexie and sophie finally got together — happy for them, obviously, but also something else. something that made my chest tight.
i'd shoved it all down. because it didn't matter. i liked boys. i had alex.
but then hannah happened.
and she wasn't like anyone else. she was funny and smart and talented and so pretty it sometimes hurt to look at her. and she got me in this way that no one else did. and being around her felt like coming home.
and that was fine. that was friendship.
until it wasn't.
until i started noticing the way her eyes crinkled when she laughed. the way she bit her lip when she was concentrating. the way she looked at me sometimes — like i was the only person in the room.
until i started wanting to be closer to her. until i started thinking about her before i fell asleep. until i almost kissed her in a bathroom and didn't pull away.
i pressed my palms against my eyes.
this was so fucked up.
i had a boyfriend. a good boyfriend. and hannah was my best friend. and even if — even if — i felt something, it didn't matter. because i wasn't that person. i wasn't gay.
i couldn't be.
my phone buzzed.
a text from hannah.
hannah: you've been weird. you ok?
my throat tightened.
me: yeah i'm good!! just busy
hannah: okay. miss u tho
i stared at those three words until they blurred.
me: miss u too
and i meant it.
god, i meant it so much it scared me.
━━━━━━━━━━
hannah's pov
dani was avoiding me.
it wasn't subtle. she was doing that thing where she'd walk into a room, see me, and suddenly remember she had to be literally anywhere else.
cool. fine. whatever.
except it wasn't fine, and i was losing my mind.
i'd barely slept since the bathroom incident. every time i closed my eyes, i saw her face — the way she'd looked at me, the way she'd leaned in, the way everything had felt possible for half a second.
and then her phone rang and it all went to shit.
now she wouldn't even look at me.
i was sitting in megan's room, sprawled across her bed while she folded laundry. lara was downstairs with the others, so it was just us.
"she's avoiding me," i said.
"yeah," megan said. "i noticed."
"what do i do?"
"nothing."
i sat up. "nothing?"
"hannah, she has a boyfriend. and she's clearly spiraling. if you push her right now, it's just gonna make it worse."
"so i just... wait?"
"yeah." megan tossed a shirt at me. "you wait. and you give her space. and you let her figure her shit out."
"that's terrible advice."
"it's the only advice." she sat down next to me. "look, i know it sucks. but dani's not stupid. she knows what almost happened. and she's gonna have to deal with it. you can't do it for it for her."
i groaned, falling back onto the bed. "i hate this."
"i know."
we sat in silence for a minute. then megan poked my side. "you know what you need?"
"therapy?"
"besides that." she grinned. "a distraction."
"i don't want a distraction."
"too bad. call mikey."
i looked at her. "what?"
"your cousin. the hot one you won't shut up about. call her."
"why?"
"because," megan said, "i want to meet her. and you need to think about literally anything other than dani for five seconds."
i hesitated, then pulled out my phone. "fine. but if she roasts you, don't say i didn't warn you."
"please. i can handle it."
i pulled up mikey's contact and hit facetime. it rang twice before she picked up.
"han!" mikey's face filled the screen, and i couldn't help but smile.
she was in her room — i could see the fairy lights strung up behind her and the dance posters on her wall. her hair was down, wavy and a little messy, falling past her shoulders. she had on an oversized crewneck that made her look even smaller than she was, and her face was bare except for some lip gloss. big brown eyes, button nose, freckles scattered across her cheeks like someone had painted them there on purpose.
she looked soft. pretty in that effortless way that made everyone do a double-take.
"hey," i said, grinning. "what are you doing?"
"just got back from rehearsal," she said, tucking her hair behind her ear. "i'm dead. why, you miss me?"
"desperately," i said dryly. "anyway, i'm calling because my friend wants to meet you."
"oh?" mikey's eyebrows raised, and she leaned closer to the camera, curious. "which friend?"
i turned the camera to megan, who waved. "hi. i'm megan."
mikey's entire face lit up. "oh shit. hi megan."
and just like that, i knew i'd made a terrible mistake.
megan leaned closer to the screen. "so you're the famous mikey."
"famous, huh?" mikey said, smiling — that soft, dimpled smile that made everyone melt. "what's hannah been saying about me?"
"that you're gorgeous, hilarious, and kind of intimidating," megan said smoothly.
mikey laughed, covering her mouth with her hand. "hannah said that?"
"i did not phrase it like that," i said quickly.
"you literally did," megan said.
"i hate you."
mikey was full-on grinning now, her nose scrunching up. "so megan. you're one of the KATSEYE girls, yeah?"
"yeah," megan said. "you a fan?"
"are you kidding? i've watched all your stuff. you're insane. like, your dancing?" mikey shook her head. "unreal."
megan's cheeks flushed a little. "thanks. hannah said you dance too?"
"yeah," mikey said, suddenly a bit shy. "nothing like you guys, though. i just do it for fun, mostly. contemporary and some hip-hop."
"that's sick," megan said. "you compete?"
"sometimes. i'm actually assistant teaching at my studio now." mikey grinned. "trying to corrupt the youth, you know."
megan laughed. "okay, i love that."
"of course you do," i muttered.
they both ignored me.
"so what's your favorite style?" megan asked, fully invested now.
"honestly? contemporary. i love the whole... emotional storytelling thing." mikey did a little hand gesture that was way too cute. "like, when you can make people feel something, you know?"
"yes!" megan said, eyes lighting up. "that's exactly why i love dance."
"see, i knew we'd vibe," mikey said, pointing at the screen.
i rolled my eyes. "you two just met."
"and we're already best friends," mikey said. "sorry, han. you've been replaced."
"tragic," i deadpanned.
megan was fully beaming now. "okay but real talk — who are your favorite dancers? like, who do you watch obsessively?"
"oh god, okay—" mikey sat up, clearly excited. "maddie ziegler, obviously. tate mcrae before she went full pop star. and lately i've been obsessed with bailey sok. her texting is insane."
"bailey's insane," megan agreed. "i met her once at a workshop. sweetest person ever."
"shut up, you did not."
"i did! she taught us this combo that literally destroyed my soul."
mikey gasped. "okay, now i'm jealous."
they kept talking — about choreographers, about training, about that one viral dance trend they both thought was overrated. mikey did this thing where she'd laugh and cover her face with her hands, and megan kept leaning closer to the screen like she was drawn in.
at one point, mikey tucked her hair behind her ear and said something that made megan bite her lip, smiling, and i realized i was watching something click into place in real time.
"okay," mikey said eventually, glancing at something off-screen. "i gotta shower and eat before i pass out. but megan—" she pointed at the camera, smiling— "you should text me. i feel like we have a lot more to talk about."
"yeah," megan said, voice a little softer. "yeah, definitely."
"cool." mikey's smile widened. "bye, loser," she said to me.
"bye, mikey," i said.
she blew a kiss at the camera — aimed at megan, not me — and hung up.
megan immediately turned to me, mouth open. "oh my god."
"yeah."
"she's—"
"i know."
"hannah." megan grabbed my shoulders. "she's perfect. like, actually perfect."
i laughed. "that was the plan."
megan shoved me. "you're a genius. give me her number. right now."
i handed over my phone, watching as she saved the contact with way too many emojis and immediately started typing.
"you're texting her already?" i asked.
"obviously." she didn't look up. "someone has to make the first move."
"you literally just met her."
"and? timing is everything, hannah."
i snorted. "you sound insane."
"you're just jealous because your love life is a disaster and mine is about to be perfect."
she wasn't wrong.
i lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling while megan typed furiously. my phone buzzed a second later in her hands — mikey responding, probably. megan smiled so wide i thought her face might break.
"she's so cute," megan whispered, more to herself than to me.
"you're disgusting," i said.
"you love me."
"debatable."
but i was smiling. and for the first time in days, i felt a little lighter.
maybe megan was right. maybe i couldn't fix my own mess. but at least i could help her start something good.
and maybe that was enough.
for now.
━━━━━━━━━━
about an hour later, i was back in my room, scrolling through my phone and trying not to think about dani (failing miserably), when my screen lit up.
incoming call: matthew
i answered immediately. "hey."
"hey, kid," he said, and i could hear the smile in his voice. "you busy?"
"not really. just existing. why, what's up?"
there was a pause. not a bad pause, but the kind that made my stomach flip a little.
"so," he said, "i have news."
i sat up. "okay...?"
"big news."
"matthew, i swear to god, if you don't just tell me—"
"dove's pregnant."
i froze.
"what?"
"dove's pregnant," he repeated, and this time i could hear it — the excitement, the disbelief, the pure joy.
"holy shit," i whispered.
"yeah."
"holy shit!" i said louder, jumping off the bed. "matthew! oh my god!"
he laughed — that full, genuine laugh i hadn't heard from him in a while. "i know. i know. it's insane."
"when did you find out?"
"like, two days ago. we wanted to wait to tell people, but i couldn't not tell you."
my eyes stung. i pressed my hand to my mouth, trying not to cry. "i'm gonna be an aunt."
"yeah. and that kid's gonna have the coolest aunt in the world."
"stop," i said, laughing through the tears that were absolutely happening now. "i'm already crying."
"good. i cried too. dove cried. everyone's crying. it's a thing."
i sat back down on my bed, trying to process it. matthew. my brother. having a child. with dove cameron.
"how is she?" i asked.
"she's good. tired. nauseous. but good. really good." his voice softened. "she's so happy, hannah. we both are."
"i'm so happy for you," i said, and i meant it. "like, so fucking happy."
"thanks, kid."
"i can't believe you're gonna be a dad," i said.
"me neither," he admitted. "it's terrifying. but in a good way, you know?"
"yeah."
"hey," he said, voice dropping a little. "how are you doing? like, actually?"
i hesitated. "i'm fine."
"hannah."
"i am," i insisted. "just... adjusting to everything. the house, the group, all of it."

hannah's pov
a year can change everything.
twelve months ago, we were moving into our own apartments, figuring out how to be independent adults (spoiler: we're still figuring that out).
now? we were in london. on our second world tour. playing sold-out venues. our debut album had charted on Billboard. "Touch" had gone viral on tiktok three separate times. we'd performed at coachella. done interviews with billboard, rolling stone, vogue.
it was insane. in the best way.
and somehow, in the middle of all that chaos, dani and i had figured our shit out.
we'd been officially dating for about eight months now. told the girls first (they all said "finally" in unison, which was rude). told our families next (matthew said he knew the whole time, also rude). eventually told the fans through the most unserious soft launch in history.
i'd posted a photo of someone's hand holding mine with the caption "she's aight" and the internet lost its mind.
dani posted the same photo from her angle an hour later with "she's okay i guess."
very romantic. very us.
━━━━━━━━━━
"hannah, i swear to god, if you don't get out of the bathroom—"
"i'm busy!"
"you've been in there for twenty minutes!"
"beauty takes time!"
i heard dani jiggle the door handle. we were in our hotel room in london — sharing, obviously, because at this point the company had given up pretending we needed separate rooms.
"i'm gonna be late for soundcheck because of you," she yelled through the door.
"then you should've woken up earlier!"
"i did wake up early! you've just been hogging the bathroom!"
i opened the door, fully dressed — baggy cargo pants, white baby tee, my arsenal beanie on backwards (had to rep the local team), chains, all my piercings. "done. relax."
she pushed past me. "you're the worst girlfriend ever."
"and yet, you're still here."
"unfortunately."
i grinned, watching her start on her makeup. she was wearing black jeans and a cropped zip-up hoodie, her hair already done in loose waves.
"you look good," i said, leaning against the doorframe.
"i know."
"cocky."
"confident," she corrected, applying mascara. "there's a difference."
"mm. debatable."
she met my eyes in the mirror. "you're really annoying, you know that?"
"it's one of my best qualities."
"name another one."
"i'm great in bed."
she choked on air, mascara wand freezing mid-application. "oh my god."
"what? you asked."
"we're going to be late," she said, face red, trying not to smile.
"worth it."
━━━━━━━━━━
soundcheck was the usual chaos.
sophia and yoonchae were running through harmonies. manon was stretching on the stage floor. lara was arguing with the sound guy about her mic levels. megan was on facetime with mikey in the corner, being disgustingly cute.
dani and i were working through the choreo for "debut," trying to nail this one transition that kept throwing us off.
"no, you're coming in too early," she said.
"i'm literally on beat."
"you're ahead of the beat."
"that's the same thing."
"it's not—" she demonstrated. "see? you're rushing."
i tried it again. still felt the same to me.
"hannah."
"dani."
"you're doing it wrong."
"or maybe you're doing it wrong."
she glared at me. "i choreographed this part."
"and i'm improving it."
"you're ruining it."
"creative differences."
she shoved me. i shoved her back. we were both trying not to smile.
"you two are like children," manon called from across the stage.
"she started it," i said.
"mature," dani said.
"says the girl who literally just shoved me first."
"you deserved it."
our choreographer sighed loudly. "can we please just run it one more time? properly?"
we did. nailed it on the first try.
"see?" i said to dani. "i was right."
"you were not right, we compromised."
"that's just what we call it when i win."
she flipped me off. i blew her a kiss.
"i'm gonna throw up," megan announced.

the show that night was insane.
the crowd was so loud you could barely hear yourself think. british fans hit different — they sang every word, screamed at every move, the energy was electric.
we opened with "debut," and the venue erupted.
halfway through "touch," i caught hannah's eye across the stage. she was in her element — hitting every move, interacting with fans, that stupid confident smirk on her face that i'd fallen in love with.
she winked at me.
i rolled my eyes but smiled.
during the break before our next song, sophia grabbed the mic. "london, you've been incredible tonight!"
the crowd screamed.
"we have one more song for you before our encore," yoonchae added.
"and we're really excited about this one," lara said.
megan grinned. "because it's brand new. you're the first to hear it."
the crowd went wild.
hannah stepped forward, adjusting her in-ear. "this one's called 'time lapse' hope you like it."
the music started, and we launched into the choreography. the song was different from our usual stuff — edgier, more aggressive, with this driving beat that made you want to move.
i loved it.
and watching hannah absolutely kill it on stage? even better.
━━━━━━━━━━
backstage after the show, we were all sweaty, exhausted, running on pure adrenaline.
"that was fucking incredible," manon said, chugging water.
"the energy was insane," sophia agreed.
"did you see the girl in the front row crying during 'tonight i might'?" yoonchae asked. "i almost cried."
"i did cry," lara admitted.
megan was already back on facetime with mikey, showing her clips. "babe, you should've seen it—"
i collapsed on the couch next to hannah, who immediately put her arm around me.
"you were good tonight," she said.
"just good?"
"great. amazing. spectacular. incredible. do you need more adjectives or—"
i elbowed her. "shut up."
"see, this is the problem with dating you. so violent."
"you love it."
"unfortunately."
she grinned, pulling me closer. i let myself lean into her, still catching my breath.
"hey," she said quietly. "i'm really glad we're doing this."
"the tour?"
"all of it. the tour, the music, us. everything."
i looked up at her. "me too."
"even though i'm annoying?"
"especially because you're annoying."
"that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."
"don't get used to it."
she kissed the top of my head. "wouldn't dream of it."
━━━━━━━━━━
later that night, we ended up at some pub near the hotel. all seven of us crammed into a corner booth, trying to decompress.
"okay but the choreography for 'my way' is brutal," sophia said. "my legs are dead."
"that transition in the second verse is evil," yoonchae agreed.
"you guys are just weak," hannah said.
"you literally almost face-planted during rehearsal yesterday," i pointed out.
"that was strategic."
"you ate shit."
"strategically."
megan threw a fry at her. "you're delusional."
"thank you."
lara was scrolling through her phone. "oh my god, we're already trending."
"what?" manon leaned over to look.
"'KATSEYE LONDON' is number three on twitter. and there's like a million videos from tonight already."
she turned her phone around. sure enough, clips of the show were everywhere. fans screaming, crying, singing along. it was surreal.
"we really made it, huh?" sophia said softly.
"yeah," I said. "we really did."
hannah squeezed my hand under the table.
we'd come so far from that first day at the dream academy house. from being trainees to this — sold out international shows, millions of fans, living our actual dream.
and somehow, in the middle of all of it, i'd found her.
or maybe she'd found me.
either way, i wasn't letting go.

hannah's pov
back at the hotel, dani and i finally had a moment alone.
she was in the bathroom taking off her makeup, and i was sprawled on the bed scrolling through fan videos from tonight.
"hey," i called out. "there's a video of you almost kicking me in the face during 'my way.'"
"almost? i should've committed."
"rude."
she came out in her sleep shirt and shorts, crawling into bed next to me. "let me see."
i showed her my phone. we watched a few videos together — fans crying, singing, the comments all freaking out about different moments.
"they really love us, huh?" she said quietly.
"yeah. they do."
she turned to look at me. "you know what's crazy?"
"what?"
"a year ago, we were just figuring this out. and now we're here. doing all of this. together."
"yeah." i set my phone down. "pretty crazy."
"good crazy though."
"the best crazy."
she smiled, and i couldn't help it — i kissed her. soft, sweet, the kind of kiss that said everything words couldn't.
when we pulled apart, she was still smiling.
"you're such a sap," she said.
"learned from the best."
"shut up."
"make me."
she kissed me again, and yeah.
this was exactly where i wanted to be.

hannah's pov
the next morning, we had a free day in london. no schedules, no rehearsals, just seven girls trying to be tourists.
we were all in the hotel lobby, arguing about what to do.
"tower of london," sophia suggested.
"too crowded," yoonchae said.
"british museum?" lara tried.
"too boring," manon countered.
"we could just walk around and find food," i offered.
"that's not a plan, that's just existing," dani said.
"and yet it's the best suggestion so far."
she rolled her eyes but she was smiling.
megan was on her phone, half-listening to us, when she suddenly went completely still.
"meg?" i said. "you good?"
"yeah, i just—" she looked up, eyes wide. "i'll be right back."
she practically ran toward the hotel entrance.
we all looked at each other.
"what was that about?" sophia asked.
"no idea," lara said.
then we heard megan scream.
we all rushed to the windows overlooking the entrance.
and there she was — jumping into someone's arms, legs wrapped around their waist, kissing them like they were in a movie.
"oh my god," manon said. "is that—"
"mikey," i finished, grinning.
she'd flown to london. surprised megan. absolutely nailed the romantic gesture.
"that's so cute i could throw up," sophia said.
"agreed," yoonchae added.
we watched them for another minute — megan crying-laughing, mikey spinning her around, both of them completely lost in their own world.
"okay," i said, turning away from the window. "new plan. we give them space and go do literally anything else."
"agreed," dani said. "i'm not third-wheeling whatever that is."
━━━━━━━━━━
we ended up splitting up. sophia and yoonchae went to camden market. manon and lara headed to some bookstore lara had been dying to visit.
which left me and dani.
alone.
in london.
with an entire day to ourselves.
"so," she said as we walked down some random street in soho. "what do you want to do?"
"honestly? nothing touristy. just... walk around. see what happens."
"very spontaneous of you."
"i contain multitudes."
"you contain chaos."
"same thing."
we walked hand in hand through the city — past shops and cafes and street performers. stopped for coffee at this tiny place with like four tables. sat on a bench in a park and people-watched for a while.
it was easy. comfortable. just us existing together without any pressure.
"you know what i realized?" dani said after a while.
"what?"
"we've been dating for eight months and we've barely had any actual alone time. like, real alone time."
she was right. between tour schedules, group activities, and the fact that we were literally always surrounded by people, privacy was rare.
"yeah," i said. "we should fix that."
she looked at me, eyebrow raised. "fix it how?"
"well, we have a hotel room. that's technically alone time."
"very smooth, baas."
"i try."
she laughed, leaning her head on my shoulder. "you're ridiculous."
"and yet."
"and yet," she agreed.
━━━━━━━━━━
we made it back to the hotel around 4 PM.
the room was quiet when we walked in — just the sound of the door closing behind us and the distant hum of london traffic outside.
dani kicked off her shoes and immediately went to fix her hair in the mirror. she was wearing this little black dress that hit mid-thigh, paired with a leather jacket and boots. looked effortlessly hot without even trying.
i watched her for a second, leaning against the wall in my cargos and crop top, beanie still backwards.
"you're staring," she said, not looking away from the mirror.
"can you blame me?"
she turned around, smiling. "no, i guess not."
i pushed off the wall, crossing the room to her. my hands found her waist — bare skin between her dress and jacket — and she automatically wrapped her arms around my neck.
"hi," she said softly.
"hi."
"we have the whole room to ourselves."
"i noticed."
"what should we do?"
i pulled her closer. "i have a few ideas."
"oh yeah?" her voice dropped, teasing. "like what?"
instead of answering, i kissed her. slow at first, testing, then deeper when she made this small sound against my mouth.
her fingers tangled in my hair, knocking my beanie off. i walked her backwards until her legs hit the bed, and she pulled me down with her.
"wait," she breathed, breaking away for a second. "did you lock the door?"
"yes."
"you sure?"
"dani."
"okay, okay." she kissed me again, harder this time.
my hands slid up her sides, pushing her jacket off her shoulders. she arched into me, nails scraping lightly against my scalp, and i bit down gently on her bottom lip.
"fuck," she whispered.
i grinned against her mouth. "you good?"
"shut up."
her hands found the hem of my crop top, fingers tracing the skin just above my waistband. i shivered.
"cold?" she asked, smirking.
"you wish."
she flipped us suddenly — i hadn't expected it — and she was on top now, straddling me, hair falling around her face.
"hi," she said again, looking down at me.
"hi yourself."
she leaned down, kissing my neck, my jaw, that spot just below my ear that she knew drove me crazy.
"dani—"
"mm?"
"you're evil."
"i know."
my hands found her thighs, sliding up slowly, feeling her breath hitch. she kissed me again, and everything else faded — the tour, the pressure, the constant noise. it was just us. just this.
her phone buzzed on the nightstand.
we both ignored it.
it buzzed again.
"should you—" i started.
"no," she said firmly, kissing me harder.
it buzzed a third time.
she groaned, pulling away and grabbing it. "this better be important."
she read the text and her expression shifted. "oh. it's megan."
"what's she want?"
"she's asking if we want to get dinner with her and mikey later."
"tell her we're busy."
"doing what?"
i raised an eyebrow.
she laughed. "i can't say that."
"then make something up."
she typed something and tossed her phone aside. "done. we have two hours."
"two hours, huh?"
"yeah." she kissed me again, softer this time. "think we can make it count?"
i flipped us again, hovering over her. "definitely."

two hours later, we were both sprawled on the bed, completely exhausted in the best way.
hannah was on her back, one arm thrown over her face, breathing still a little uneven. her crop top was somewhere on the floor. my dress was pushed up and wrinkled beyond repair.
"we need to shower," i said, not moving.
"mm. eventually."
"hannah, we're supposed to meet everyone in like twenty minutes."
"tell them we died."
"very mature."
"i'm tired. you wore me out."
i turned my head to look at her. "pretty sure it was mutual."
she grinned, finally moving her arm to look at me. "yeah. it was."
we just stared at each other for a second, both smiling like idiots.
"we should probably get up," i said.
"probably."
neither of us moved.
"okay, on three," I said. "one... two..."
"three," we said together.
still didn't move.
"we're pathetic," hannah said.
"completely."
finally, she groaned and sat up, running her hands through her messy hair. "okay. shower. now. before i fall asleep."
"together?"
"that's a terrible idea."
"why?"
"because then we'll never leave."
"and?"
she looked at me, eyebrow raised. "you're trouble."
"you love it."
"unfortunately."
we eventually made it to the shower — which, as predicted, took way longer than it should have.
by the time we were dressed and presentable again, we were definitely late.
"they're gonna know," i said, checking my hair in the mirror.
"know what?" hannah asked, pulling on a fresh tank top.
"what we were doing."
"so? we're dating. they can deal with it."
"megan's gonna be so annoying about it."
"megan's always annoying."
she wasn't wrong.
━━━━━━━━━━
we met everyone at some restaurant near the hotel. megan took one look at us and grinned.
"you're glowing," she said to me.
"shut up."
"both of you are."
hannah flipped her off. "where's mikey?"
"bathroom," megan said, still grinning. "nice try changing the subject though."
mikey came back a minute later, and i finally got to meet her in person. she was exactly how hannah had described — soft pretty features, dancer build, that easy confidence. she hugged hannah first.
"finally," mikey said. "been waiting forever to meet everyone."
"this is dani," hannah said, gesturing to me.
"oh, i know," mikey said, smiling. "megan won't shut up about you two."
"great," i said. "love that for us."
we all sat down, and dinner was actually really nice. mikey fit right in with the group, trading stories with megan, asking us about tour life, being effortlessly charming.
"so how long are you here for?" sophia asked her.
"just a few days," mikey said. "i have to get back for work. but i couldn't miss the chance to surprise this one." she squeezed megan's hand.
"it was very romantic," yoonchae said. "we all watched from the window."
"you what?" megan said.
"we saw everything," manon confirmed.
"oh my god."
"it was cute!" lara said.
"mortifying," megan muttered.
under the table, hannah's hand found mine. i squeezed her fingers, and she squeezed back.
summary: on the plane shenanigans and arriving in korea. plus hanging out in korea. some mistakes are made. the timeline most likely won't add up - sorry.

hannah's pov
when i woke up again, the cabin lights were off and everything was tinted blue. the screens in front of most seats were dark. the little digital map said 6 hours 27 minutes remaining.
everyone was asleep. like, everyone.
the only sounds were the hum of the engines and someone’s soft snoring two rows back. even dani had gone still next to me, her head tilted toward the window, hoodie pulled over her face. her phone was wedged between the seats — i could see alex’s name still at the top of her messages, faintly glowing until it timed out.
i shifted a little, trying not to wake her, and stretched my legs. the aisle lights glowed faintly, just enough to see shapes.
across from us, lexie and sophie were curled up together under one of those thin airline blankets. i almost laughed, because they really thought no one could see them. lexie’s head was tucked under sophie’s chin, her hand tangled in sophie’s hoodie drawstring.
sophie was half awake, tracing small circles on lexie’s back with her thumb. every so often she’d lean down and kiss the top of lexie’s head, quick and gentle, like she didn’t even realize she was doing it.
they whispered something, so quiet i couldn’t make it out. lexie laughed — that soft, breathy kind of laugh people do when they’re trying to stay quiet — and then reached up to kiss her. just a short one, but real.
sophie smiled against her mouth.
it wasn’t dramatic, just… warm. private. the kind of thing you weren’t supposed to see.
i turned back toward the window, trying to give them their little bubble. the reflection of the wing lights flashed every few seconds. dani shifted beside me in her sleep, her arm brushing mine.
i closed my eyes again and tried to go back to sleep, but my brain wouldn’t shut up. it kept replaying the way sophie had looked at lexie — calm, easy, sure.
the plane hummed, steady and quiet.
i wanted to feel that kind of sure.
━━━━━━━━━━
the second the wheels hit the ground, everyone groaned like it was a collective religious experience.
“we’re in korea,” megan mumbled, face still half buried in her blanket.
“barely,” dani said, stretching and immediately regretting it. “my spine’s gone.”
“mine left around greenland,” i added.
customs, baggage claim, and the long shuffle through the airport were a blur. everyone looked like zombies — hair sticking out, hoodies pulled up, sunglasses indoors. emily somehow managed to still look decent, which honestly felt rude.
by the time we piled onto the bus, it was bright morning outside. korea actually looked… beautiful. even through my jetlag haze, it felt unreal — gray buildings stacked tight, flashes of signs in hangul, people moving everywhere.
i slumped into a window seat next to dani, who immediately leaned her head on my shoulder. “wake me when we debut,” she muttered.
megan turned around from the seat in front of us, messy bun barely hanging on. “nah, i’m not making it that far. bury me behind the practice building.”
“we’ll hold auditions for your replacement,” i said, deadpan.
“thank you for your service,” dani added.
the bus jolted and half the girls groaned in unison again. it was kind of comforting — twenty-two exhausted girls who’d all just left their entire lives behind, breathing the same recycled air.
when we finally pulled up to the dorms, everyone just stared out the window for a second. the building was huge — sleek and gray, glass panels, everything so clean it looked fake.
“they’re gonna make us live here?” megan asked, squinting.
“it’s nicer than my house,” dani said.
“same,” i muttered.
inside, the staff gave us keycards and room numbers, speaking half in korean and half in english. i was so tired i almost fell asleep standing up.
“room 302 — that’s us,” dani said, reading our little paper. “me, hannah, and megan.”
megan fist pumped weakly. “the dream team.”
we rode the elevator up, dragging our suitcases like corpses. the hallway smelled like new paint and laundry detergent. when we found our door, dani swiped the keycard and threw it open dramatically.
“behold,” she announced, “our prison.”
it was… actually really nice. bright wood floors, three twin beds, a tiny kitchenette, and big windows that looked out over the city. there were already slippers lined up by the door.
“dibs on that bed,” megan said immediately, pointing at the one closest to the window.
“absolutely not,” i said.
“fight me.”
dani groaned and collapsed face-first on the middle bed. “you two can kill each other quietly, please.”
megan flopped down beside her. “wake us up in three months.”
i set my bag down and sank to the floor. the jetlag was hitting hard, but it was weirdly nice — the three of us in a foreign country, half-dead but together.
across the hall, i could hear lexie and ezrela laughing about something. down the hall, brooklyn yelled that the shower didn’t work, followed by sophie shouting back that she was using all the hot water.
it felt like camp. really expensive, high-stakes camp.
“hey,” dani mumbled from her pillow, not looking up, “if i die, tell alex i—”
“no,” i cut in. “he doesn’t deserve your dramatic last words.”
she cracked a smile. “you’re jealous.”
“of alex? please.”
megan snorted. “you so are.”
i threw a pillow at her, but she was too tired to even dodge.
for the first time since landing, i laughed.
━━━━━━━━━━
megan's pov
dani was out cold within minutes. i’m talking full-dead, mouth-slightly-open, face-in-the-pillow type of asleep. jet lag hit her like a truck.
hannah was still sitting cross-legged on her own bed across the room, headphones in, staring blankly at her phone screen like she’d forgotten what she was even looking at.
i watched her for a second before whispering, “hey.”
she didn’t hear me at first, so i threw a balled-up sock at her. it hit her shoulder. she jumped.
“jesus—”
“come here,” i whispered, waving her over.
she hesitated, looking at dani.
“she’s not waking up,” i said. “trust me.”
hannah sighed and climbed over, sitting on the edge of my bed. she looked tired — not just from the flight, but like her brain had been spinning nonstop for hours.
for a minute we just sat there in the low hum of the air conditioning. i fiddled with the tag on my blanket before saying, “so… you wanna tell me what’s going on with you and dani, or should i pretend not to notice forever?”
hannah groaned quietly. “meg.”
“what? i’m not judging. i just— you act weird when she’s around.”
“i don’t.”
“you do.” i grinned a little, keeping it light. “like earlier, when she fell asleep on your shoulder? you looked like a cartoon character trying not to melt.”
hannah laughed — just once, low and embarrassed. she ran a hand through her hair. “you’re imagining it.”
“am i?” i said. “because i’ve known you for seven months, and i’ve seen you pretend to be fine around a lot of people, but you don’t look at anyone like that.”
she went quiet. her jaw tightened a bit, and she stared down at her hands.
i instantly felt bad. “hey,” i said softly, “i’m not— i’m just asking. you can tell me to shut up.”
she took a deep breath. “it’s stupid.”
“try me.”
her voice dropped. “she has a boyfriend, meg.”
i nodded slowly. “yeah.”
“and she’s happy,” she said, quieter. “and she’s— she’s my best friend. she trusts me. and i can’t even look at her sometimes without—” she cut herself off, biting her lip hard.
i didn’t say anything. the air felt heavy, but not uncomfortable.
hannah laughed under her breath, sharp and humorless. “i don’t even cry, you know that?”
“yeah,” i whispered.
her voice cracked a little. “but i— i can’t turn it off. i tried. i keep thinking it’s just a stupid crush, but it’s not going away. and i hate that.”
her eyes were glossy now, and she turned her face away fast. “god, i’m fine,” she muttered.
i just reached out and pulled her into a hug — not tight, just enough that she didn’t have to keep pretending. she didn’t hug back right away, but then she exhaled and leaned into it, forehead pressed against my shoulder.
“you’re allowed to like people you shouldn’t,” i said quietly. “doesn’t make you a bad person. it just sucks sometimes.”
she laughed a little through it, still half-crying. “you sound like a therapist.”
“yeah, well,” i said, trying to smile, “therapy’s expensive.”
she snorted, pulling back and wiping her face with her sleeve. “if you tell anyone i cried, i’ll actually kill you.”
“please,” i said, “you’d miss me too much.”
she rolled her eyes, but the corner of her mouth tugged upward — small, tired, but real.
we sat there for a bit longer, not saying anything. dani mumbled something in her sleep and rolled over, and hannah looked at her for a second too long before turning away again.
it wasn’t fixed — nothing was — but it felt like she’d finally let herself breathe.

no ones pov
the city air hit them the second they stepped out of the van — warm, alive, full of noise. seoul at night was glowing. everyone was still jetlagged and half-delirious, but it didn’t stop them from piling into the first convenience store they saw like it was disneyland.
“okay, i’m not even hungry,” megan said, already holding three bags of chips.
“uh-huh,” hannah said, tossing a banana milk into her basket. “you’re coping through snacks.”
“and you’re coping through sarcasm,” megan shot back.
“yeah, well. mine’s cheaper.”
they both laughed, and yoonchae — who was filming for the HYBE tiktok — panned the camera over to them. “these are our cultural ambassadors,” she deadpanned in korean, making the rest of the girls crack up in the background.
the store was tiny but somehow felt full of life: mei and ua were arguing over which ramen was spicier, manon was showing marquise how to work the ice cream machine, and lara had gotten stuck trying to translate the directions on a rice triangle.
“you’re supposed to peel it like this,” sophia said, trying to help.
lara ripped it open anyway. “okay but i like the chaos,” she said through a mouthful of rice.
brooklyn was filming everything, laughing so hard her camera kept shaking.
iliya, of course, was off in the corner pretending not to be part of the group, scrolling on her phone and pretending to be annoyed — but she still laughed when karlee tried (and failed) to pronounce half the labels.
outside, the street was still alive — neon everywhere, people walking fast but smiling when they saw the cameras. the girls spilled out onto the sidewalk, holding drinks and snacks, some of them singing off-key.
hannah and megan shared one of those weird little laughs that only made sense to them, while lara leaned on hannah’s shoulder, muttering something about needing to nap on the pavement.
near the end of the block, lexie and sophie had drifted a bit away from the group — not intentionally, just slowly, like gravity. lexie’s hoodie was too big and sophie had her hair tied up messily, and they were talking low, smiling without needing words. at one point, sophie tucked a strand of hair behind lexie’s ear, quick and small. no one said anything, but a few people noticed.
“they’re disgustingly cute,” marquise whispered to brooklyn.
“yeah,” brooklyn said, “and i kinda love it.”
the night kept going — more filming, more laughing, everyone running on that weird mix of exhaustion and adrenaline. someone started a small dance circle on the sidewalk, and hannah ended up in the middle of it, killing it so hard that even locals stopped to watch.
by the time they stumbled back toward the van, the group felt different — lighter. the exhaustion was still there, but so was something new.
for the first time since arriving, it felt like maybe they could actually live here — at least for a while.

daniela's pov
the dorm was mostly quiet now. lights dimmed, a few girls snoring softly, the hum of the air conditioning low in the background. i was sitting on my bed, phone in hand, typing slowly to alex. the little bubbles of our conversation glowed in the dark.
alex: finally made it
me: yeah, barely. jet lag is murdering me
alex: i miss you
i smiled, thumb hovering over the screen. typed something, deleted it, typed again. the words felt too small to match how i actually felt.
i looked up, and that’s when i saw hannah.
she was sprawled across her bed, one arm hanging off the side, hair messy, lips slightly parted. the overhead light from the hallway made her features soft but sharp at the same time. her hoodie had slipped a little, showing the curve of her neck. she looked… good. really good.
i blinked, shook my head, then caught myself staring again. she was asleep — utterly unaware. she looked peaceful, but there was something in the line of her jaw, the set of her shoulders, that made me pause.
i felt that odd tug of appreciation — like, wow, she’s stunning — and then immediately reminded myself: i’m straight, she’s my best friend, this is fine. this is completely fine.
she shifted a little in her sleep, murmuring something quiet, and i felt that weird little pinch in my chest that always came with her. not love, not like that… just… closeness. intimacy in the way only best friends could have.
alex pinged again. good night
i typed back, fingers slower than usual. good night
then i leaned back against my pillow, glancing at hannah one more time before finally closing my eyes. she really was something — adorable, frustrating, hilarious, infuriating, and completely untouchable.
and i loved her for it.
i closed my eyes, trying to get at least one hour of sleep but my brain was buzzing.
so i peaked my eyes open and caught glance of hannah again and my head slowly became quiet.
summary: sometimes the worst things happen on ordinary nights. and sometimes your friends are the only thing holding you together.

daniela's pov
the house was quiet for once. well, quieter than usual.
sophia and yoonchae were in the living room watching some cooking show, arguing about whether the contestant should've used olive oil or butter. manon was upstairs on a call with her family. lara and megan were in the kitchen attempting to bake cookies — emphasis on attempting, based on the smell of something burning.
and hannah was sprawled on the couch near me, scrolling through her phone, one leg thrown over the armrest. she'd changed after practice into black joggers and a tight white tank top, her hair pulled back in a messy bun. casual. comfortable. completely unaware of how good she looked.
not that i was paying attention to that.
we'd gotten back to normal over the past year. whatever weirdness had existed between us — the almost-kiss, the tension, all of it — we'd buried it. shoved it down until it felt like maybe it had never happened at all.
we were best friends. that was it. that was all we needed to be.
i grabbed my phone from the coffee table. alex and i hadn't talked much today — he'd been busy with classes, i'd been in rehearsals for the "Touch" release. but i missed him. i always did when we went too long without talking.
i pulled up facetime and hit his name.
it rang once. twice. three times.
then he answered.
and my entire world stopped.
the screen was dark at first, angled weird, like the phone was laying on something. i could hear shuffling, a soft laugh — female.
then the camera shifted.
alex. shirtless. in bed.
and there was a girl next to him. blonde. laughing. her hand on his chest.
he looked at the screen, and his face went white.
"dani—"
i couldn't breathe.
"who is that?" the girl asked, sitting up a little.
"dani, wait, i can explain—"
"explain?" my voice came out sharp, louder than i meant. "explain what, alex? that you're in bed with someone else?"
"it's not— it's not what it looks like—"
"it looks like you're fucking someone else!" i was shaking now, my whole body vibrating with anger, with hurt, with something i couldn't even name.
across the room, everyone had gone silent. i could feel them all staring but i didn't care.
"dani, please, just listen—"
"no." my voice cracked. "we're done. we're fucking done."
"dani—"
i hung up.
the phone slipped from my hands onto the couch. i stared at the black screen, my chest heaving, eyes burning.
he was cheating on me.
alex was cheating on me.
the room was still silent. i could feel everyone's eyes on me but i couldn't look at them. couldn't move. couldn't breathe.
"dani?" sophia's voice, soft and careful.
i didn't answer.
my phone buzzed. once. twice. three times. texts from alex, probably. apologies. excuses. lies.
i grabbed it and turned it off completely.
━━━━━━━━━━
hannah's pov
i watched the whole thing happen.
watched dani's face go from confused to devastated to furious in the span of thirty seconds. watched her hang up and just... stop. like someone had hit pause on her.
"dani," i said quietly, sitting up.
she didn't look at me. didn't look at anyone. just stared at her phone in her hands like it was something foreign.
megan appeared in the doorway, flour on her shirt, looking alarmed. "what happened?"
"alex," lara said from the other couch, voice tight. "he was with someone else."
"what?" megan's voice shot up. "are you fucking kidding me?"
"that piece of shit," manon said, coming down the stairs. "i'm gonna kill him."
i stood up slowly, moving toward dani. "hey."
she finally looked up at me, and my heart cracked. her eyes were glassy, jaw tight, trying so hard not to cry.
"i'm fine," she said, but her voice shook.
"you're not."
"i am." she stood up abruptly, wiping at her face even though no tears had fallen yet. "i'm fine. it's fine. i don't— i don't want to talk about it."
"dani—"
"i said i'm fine!" her voice broke on the last word, and she pressed her hand to her mouth, turning away.
sophia stood up. "movie night. we're having a movie night."
"sophie—" yoonchae started.
"no. we're doing it." sophia's voice was firm but gentle. "everyone grab blankets and snacks. we're watching something stupid and we're all staying down here."
no one argued.
within ten minutes, the living room was transformed. blankets everywhere, pillows piled up, the coffee table loaded with chips and candy and the slightly burnt cookies megan and lara had made. sophia put on some mindless comedy that none of us were really watching.
dani sat in the corner of the couch, knees pulled to her chest, staring at nothing.
i sat next to her, not touching, just... there.
about halfway through the movie, manon paused it.
"okay," she said. "we need to talk about it."
"manon—" dani started.
"no. you don't have to go into detail if you don't want to. but you need to say it out loud. because keeping it in is just gonna make it worse."
dani was quiet for a long moment. then she took a shaky breath.
"he was cheating on me," she said, voice flat. "i called him and he was in bed with someone else. and he tried to lie about it. like i'm stupid. like i didn't just see it with my own eyes."
"what a fucking asshole," megan said.
"i'm gonna find him," manon said. "i'm gonna fly to wherever he is and—"
"he's not worth it," lara cut in. "seriously. he's not worth any of our energy."
"lara's right," sophia said. "he's garbage. and you deserve so much better."
yoonchae nodded. "you're literally perfect. he's an idiot."
dani laughed, but it came out wet and broken. "i just... i don't understand. we were fine. we were good. i thought—" her voice cracked. "i thought he loved me."
"hey." i reached over and took her hand. "that's not on you. that's on him. he's the one who fucked up. not you."
she looked at me, eyes shining with unshed tears. "i feel so stupid."
"you're not stupid," i said firmly. "he is. and honestly? you're better off without him."
the tears finally spilled over. she covered her face with her free hand, shoulders shaking, and i pulled her into me without thinking. she buried her face in my shoulder and just... broke.
i held her tight, one hand in her hair, the other around her back, and let her cry. the others moved closer — sophia rubbing her back, megan squeezing her ankle, lara holding her other hand. we all just surrounded her, held her together while she fell apart.
"we've got you," i whispered into her hair. "we've got you."
and we did. all of us. for as long as she needed.
━━━━━━━━━━
it was late when everyone finally started falling asleep. the movie had long since ended, replaced by some random playlist on low volume.
sophia and yoonchae were passed out on the floor, tangled in blankets. manon was half-asleep sitting up, head tilted back against the couch. lara and megan were curled up together on the other side.
dani had cried herself into exhaustion about an hour ago and was now asleep against my shoulder, her breathing finally even and calm.
i should've been tired. i was tired. but i couldn't sleep.
i kept thinking about alex. about the way dani's face had looked when she saw him. about how badly i wanted to find him and make him hurt the way he'd hurt her.
but more than that, i kept thinking about the fact that she was single now.
and i hated myself for even letting that thought enter my brain.
because this wasn't about me. this was about her. about her heart being broken by someone who didn't deserve her in the first place.
i looked down at her — face relaxed in sleep, tear tracks still visible on her cheeks, hair falling across her forehead.
she was so beautiful. even now. especially now.
and she deserved someone who would never make her feel like this. someone who would choose her every single time without question.
i brushed a strand of hair away from her face, careful not to wake her.
"you're gonna be okay," i whispered. "i promise."
she shifted slightly, pressing closer to me in her sleep.
and i held her tighter, trying to ignore the way my heart was racing.
trying to ignore the fact that everything had just changed.
again.

hannah's pov
five weeks.
it had been five weeks since that night. since alex. since dani broke down in all of our arms and cried herself to sleep.
and slowly — so slowly at first that you almost couldn't see it — she started coming back to herself.
the tour helped. being on stage every night, performing, losing ourselves in the music and the crowds. it was easier to breathe when you were too busy to think.
we were different now too. all of us.
i looked different, for one. the red in my hair had faded to this orangey-brown that i actually kind of liked. my ears were loaded with piercings now — multiple on each lobe, cartilage, a helix that had hurt like hell. i'd gotten my belly button pierced in bangkok on a dare from megan, and yeah, that one hurt too.
my style had shifted. baggy low-rise jeans that sat on my hips, the waistband of my boxers always visible. tank tops — mostly spaghetti straps in black or white. and my backwards hat. always. yankees, dodgers, whatever. i felt more like myself this way. more comfortable.
the eyeliner helped too. smoky, smudged, a little messy. made my green eyes look more intense.
"you look gay as fuck," megan had said one morning.
"thank you." i'd responded.
━━━━━━━━━━
dani and i were... different too.
not in a bad way. just different.
we'd hold pinkies. that was it. walking through airports, sitting on couches, whenever we were near each other — our pinkies would link. simple. easy. ours.
and we were funny together. like, genuinely chaotic.
we'd go on weverse lives with manon and megan and just cause absolute mayhem. reading unhinged comments, roasting each other, doing stupid challenges. the fans ate it up.
"okay but who's the better dancer, hannah or dani?" manon read from the comments during one live.
"me," dani and i said at the same time.
"absolutely not," i added. "i'm clearly superior."
"you literally fell off the stage last week," dani said.
"that was strategic."
"you ate shit in front of ten thousand people."
"and i made it look iconic."
megan was wheezing. "you two are idiots."
"and yet you love us," i said, blowing a kiss at the camera.
the comment section exploded.
━━━━━━━━━━
we landed back in LA late at night, all of us exhausted but buzzing.
the house felt weird when we walked in. like we'd outgrown it somehow.
"home," megan sighed, dropping her bags.
"i'm sleeping for a year," yoonchae announced.
"i call shower first!" sophia yelled, already running up the stairs.
i dragged my suitcase to my room and collapsed on my bed. lara was already there, face-planted into her pillow.
"i can't feel my body," she mumbled.
"same."
my phone buzzed. matthew.
matthew: heard the tour went well. mila misses you. come visit soon?
i smiled.
me: soon. promise. how's my favorite niece?
matthew: perfect. also your only niece.
me: still my favorite.
matthew: love you kid.
me: love you too.
i set my phone down and stared at the ceiling, trying to decompress.
there was a knock on the door.
"yeah?"
dani poked her head in. "can't sleep?"
"not yet. you?"
"same." she walked in and sat on the edge of my bed, our pinkies automatically linking. "it's weird being back."
"yeah."
we sat like that for a bit, comfortable silence filling the space.
"hey," she said quietly. "thank you. for everything these past few weeks. you made it easier."
"always."
she smiled — soft, real — and my heart did that stupid flutter thing it always did around her now.
"goodnight, dutch girl," she said, standing up.
"goodnight, avanzini."
she left, and i lay back down, staring at the ceiling, wondering how much longer i could keep pretending i wasn't completely gone for her.
━━━━━━━━━━
the next morning, we all gathered in the living room. missy had called an emergency meeting, which was never a good sign.
except this time, it was.
"morning, ladies," she said, looking way too chipper for 9 AM. "i have news from HYBE."
we all perked up.
"you're being given the option to move out of the house and into your own apartments. you've proven you can handle the independence, and the company thinks it's time for the next step."
silence.
then chaos.
"wait, WHAT?" sophia shrieked.
"we can leave?" manon asked.
"like, actually leave?" megan said.
"yes," missy laughed. "you can get your own places. with approval on location and security, of course. but yes."
"holy shit," i breathed.
everyone started talking at once — excited, shocked, already planning. yoonchae and sophia immediately started looking up apartments on their phones. lara looked overwhelmed but happy.
i looked at dani. she was already looking at me, and we both smiled.
"you thinking what i'm thinking?" she asked.
"that i'm finally gonna have a place where i can be as loud as i want?"
"exactly."
━━━━━━━━━━
an hour later, we were all sprawled across the living room, still buzzing from the news. megan was on her phone, presumably texting mikey. manon was making a pro-con list. sophia and yoonchae were arguing about neighborhoods.
i was sitting on the floor, back against the couch, dani next to me.
"yo, hannah," megan said suddenly. "when are you gonna ask dani out?"
i choked on air. "excuse me?"
"you heard me."
everyone went quiet. all eyes on us.
"megan—"
"no, seriously," megan continued, grinning like the menace she was. "you two have been doing this weird pinky-holding, flirty-but-not-flirty thing for weeks. just ask her out already."
"i hate you," i said.
"you love me," megan shot back.
i looked at dani. she was staring at me, eyebrows raised, a small smile playing on her lips.
fuck it.
"dani," i said, turning to face her properly. "do you want to go on a date with me?"
the room erupted.
"OH MY GOD," sophia screamed.
"FINALLY," manon yelled.
megan was recording. of course she was.
dani just looked at me, that smile growing wider. "yeah," she said. "yeah, i do."
"cool," i said, trying to play it off even though my heart was racing. "cool cool cool."
"so smooth," lara muttered.
"shut up."
dani laughed — that real, full laugh. "when?"
"uh..." i hadn't thought that far ahead. "tomorrow?"
"okay."
"okay."
we just stared at each other, both smiling like idiots, while everyone around us lost their minds.
"this is the best day of my life," megan said, still recording.
"megan, i swear to god—" i started.
"nope. this is going in the group chat. and probably on the internet."
"you're the worst."
"and yet, you love me."
she wasn't wrong.
━━━━━━━━━━
that night, i lay in bed staring at the ceiling again.
i had a date with dani tomorrow.
a real date.
holy shit.
my phone buzzed.
dani: you better not take me somewhere boring
me: excuse me, i'm an excellent date planner
dani: prove it
me: challenge accepted
dani: goodnight hannah
me: goodnight dani
i set my phone down and pressed my hands to my face, trying not to scream.
megan threw a pillow at me from across the room. "go to sleep, gay panic."
"i hate you."
"no you don't."
she was right.
but i was too busy freaking out about tomorrow to care.

hannah's pov
mission one was over. finally.
three weeks of sore knees, zero sleep, and pretending i didn’t want to strangle whoever picked our song. our group — me, dani, and megan, plus a few others — basically lived in the practice room. by the end, our brains were running on caffeine, takeout, and pure delusion.
megan was lying flat on the floor, face down. “if i move, i die,” she mumbled.
“then stay there,” i said, sitting cross-legged next to her. “you’re at peace now.”
dani was half on top of me, scrolling through her phone. “we’re gonna have nightmares about this choreography.”
“already had one,” i said. “sohey was chasing me with a metronome.”
she snorted and almost dropped her phone on my face.
eliminations were that night. all 24 of us sat in neat little rows like we were back in school detention, staring at the big screen.
the computer voice came on — that weird robotic one that somehow made everything sound worse.
“trainees, mission one results will now be announced. two trainees will be eliminated.”
no one breathed.
“the first trainee eliminated is… hinari.”
she nodded quietly, smiling, bowing a little. she was sweet. the room stayed dead silent.
“the second trainee eliminated is… adéla.”
my stomach dropped. adéla looked shocked for half a second, then smiled through it. dani’s hand was still resting on my arm, and I felt her fingers twitch a little.
“it’s okay,” adéla said, voice soft but steady. “you guys better kill it next time.”
and then just like that — two gone. the screen blinked.
22 trainees remain.
i leaned sideways into dani. “that was… awful.”
“yeah,” she said, voice quiet. then she sighed. “but we made it.”
“barely.”
“don’t jinx it.”
“too late.”
megan groaned from the row behind us. “can we go home now or do we have to listen to the robot congratulate us again?”
the screen shut off. mission one, done. just like that.
━━━━━━━━━━
there’s only one way to describe sophie monroe — unserious. in the best way.
she’s the kind of person who turns every rehearsal into a comedy show and somehow still dances better than everyone else. canadian, nineteen, and way too effortlessly cool for her own good.
she’d only been here a few months fewer than me, but you’d think she’d built the place herself. everybody liked her — even the girls who pretended they didn’t.
and then there was lexie.
the two of them had this… thing. no one said it out loud, but everyone knew. they’d be rehearsing and suddenly the air would shift — like you could feel them syncing up. same rhythm, same energy, same grin after nailing a move.
“they’re so obvious,” dani whispered to me once, watching them run through choreography.
“i mean, yeah,” i whispered back. “if they were any closer, they’d share a heartbeat.”
sophie spun, hit her mark perfectly, then winked at lexie. lexie tried not to smile — failed miserably.
“uh-huh,” dani said, smirking. “definitely not a thing.”
outside of practice, they were always vanishing together — “for snacks” or “to go over steps.” sure. because snacks take forty minutes.
still, sophie was impossible not to like. she was one of those people who made the room lighter just by existing. she’d crash onto the couch next to me, drop her head dramatically into my lap, and start complaining about everything from jet lag to her hair not cooperating.
“you think they’ll ever stop giving us matching outfits?” she asked one night, scrolling through her phone.
“no,” i said. “we’re dolls now. accept it.”
she groaned. “ugh. i miss wearing normal clothes.”
“you wore jeans with holes the size of canada last week.”
“exactly. freedom.”
━━━━━━━━━━
dani's pov
airports make everyone look rough.
the lighting’s bad, the food’s worse, and hannah looks like she hasn’t slept in a month — which is fair, considering she hasn’t.
she’s sitting cross-legged on the floor by the gate, wearing a hoodie that’s definitely not hers (probably marquise’s), scrolling through her phone like we’re not about to be stuck on a fourteen-hour flight to korea.
“you look dead,” i said, kicking her sneaker.
“thank you,” she muttered. “i’m going for that whole jet-lagged supermodel thing.”
“nailed it. minus the supermodel part.”
she looked up and squinted at me. “don’t talk to me before i get food. actually, don’t talk to me at all.”
“too bad,” i said, sitting next to her and stealing the phone from her hands. “we’re getting food.”
“ugh, fine. i hope it’s poison.”
“same.”
we stood and joined the chaos — me, hannah, megan, lara, emily, and marquise — all dragging carry-ons and somehow already annoying everyone in the terminal. emily was trying to convince the guy at the sandwich counter that she was “a celebrity in training,” and marquise kept pretending to vlog.
hannah leaned against the wall while i ordered, her hood up, eyes half-lidded.
she looked like she was thinking about something, but knowing her, it was probably just food.
when i handed her a sandwich, she raised an eyebrow. “you remembered i don’t eat ham?”
“no, i just hate you slightly less when you’re fed.”
“aww. friendship.”
i rolled my eyes, but she smiled — small, almost smug.
we found seats again by the window. megan was already passed out across three chairs, lara was watching fancams like her life depended on it, and emily was taking selfies.
typical.
hannah nudged me with her knee. “you nervous?”
“for what?”
“you know. new country, new mission, cameras in our faces again.”
“nah. i’m fine.”
she tilted her head, studying me. “liar.”
“whatever,” i said, pulling my hoodie tighter. “focus on your sandwich, dutch girl.”
she grinned, biting into it. “yes, ma’am.”
i tried not to smile. she caught it anyway.
“see? you like me.”
“debatable.”
“nope,” she said, leaning back, voice low but sure. “you do.”
i shoved her shoulder, half-laughing. “shut up.”
she laughed too — quiet, but real.
and when she leaned her head against my shoulder a minute later, pretending to nap, i didn’t move her off.
boarding was chaos.
someone (emily) forgot her passport in a vending machine. someone else (megan) brought an entire neck pillow collection. and somehow, hannah convinced the flight attendant that her carry-on “definitely” fit in the overhead bin — which it didn’t. it was like watching a war happen in slow motion.
“you’re embarrassing,” i muttered as she tried to shove it in.
“you’re just mad i’m stronger than you,” she said, giving it one final slam. the bin clicked shut, barely. she turned to me, smug. “see? perfect fit.”
“you almost decapitated a flight attendant.”
“almost doesn’t count.”
i just shook my head and followed her to our seats. middle and window. great. i got the middle one because apparently i “looked more flexible.” whatever that means.
as everyone got settled — emily and lara already taking selfies across the aisle, marquise talking too loud, megan threatening to throw her shoe if anyone snored — hannah slid down in her seat, pulling her hood up and tucking her knees up like she was at home.
i pulled out my phone.
one new message from alex.
hey, let me know when you land. love you
my stomach twisted, not in a bad way. just… weird.
he’d been busy lately, we both had. the whole time difference thing didn’t help either. but still — he was solid. he was safe.
will do. love you too.
i put my phone facedown on the tray table. hannah peeked over.
“texting lover boy?”
“yep.”
“gross,” she said immediately, turning toward the window. “people in relationships shouldn’t be allowed in economy.”
“then walk to korea.”
she snorted. “tempting.”
the plane started taxiing, and hannah went quiet for once. her hand was gripping the armrest, white-knuckled. i pretended not to notice.
“you good?”
“yep,” she said quickly. “totally fine. love turbulence. big fan.”
“we haven’t even taken off yet.”
“still counts.”
i couldn’t help it — i laughed. she glared at me, but her mouth twitched like she wanted to laugh too.
takeoff hit, the plane tilted, and she instinctively grabbed my sleeve.
“sorry,” she muttered, releasing it like it burned.
“it’s fine,” i said, trying not to sound amused.
she shifted again, trying to hide her face in the hood. “if i die, delete my drafts folder.”
“absolutely not. i’m leaking them.”
“traitor.”
half an hour later, everyone had either knocked out or was halfway there. lara was drooling on her neck pillow, emily had her legs on marquise, and hannah was still fighting sleep next to me — eyes fluttering shut every few seconds, then snapping open like she refused to lose.
“you can just sleep, you know,” i said quietly.
“nah,” she mumbled, voice slurred from exhaustion. “you’ll draw on my face.”
“you think too highly of me.”
“no,” she whispered, a little smile forming, “i think just enough.”
she fell asleep not long after that — head eventually dropping onto my shoulder.
i thought about moving, but didn’t.
her curls brushed against my cheek every time she breathed.
it should’ve been uncomfortable. it wasn’t.
i looked down at her — freckles, relaxed mouth, the faintest smile even in sleep — and felt that same annoying twist in my chest again.
i turned away, staring out the window instead. clouds below us, sun fading.
somewhere between LAX and Seoul, i realized i was completely, absolutely, irreversibly screwed.

hannah's pov
i woke up to the sound of someone unwrapping a snack like they were auditioning for the world’s loudest human award.
for a second, i didn’t even remember where i was. my head was on something warm — dani’s shoulder — and she was completely out, mouth slightly open, hoodie half off her shoulder. the plane lights were dimmed, most people asleep, a few screens glowing blue in the dark.
i sat up carefully, trying not to wake her. my neck cracked like a glow stick. nice.
she didn’t stir, just shifted slightly and kept breathing slow. i slipped out of the row and stretched, then looked down the aisle. a few of the girls were awake near the back — i spotted megan’s bright pink hoodie immediately. of course.
i made my way down the aisle, trying not to trip over anyone’s legs.
“look who decided to rejoin the living,” megan said when she saw me.
“shut up,” i muttered, sitting down on the armrest of her seat. “you’re loud enough to wake the whole cabin.”
“you looked dead,” manon said, biting into a cookie. “we thought you’d actually passed away mid-flight.”
“honestly would’ve been less painful than this seat,” i said.
lexie, half-asleep against sophie's shoulder, snorted. “it’s giving economy trauma.”
sophie elbowed her lightly. “don’t slander economy, boi, it builds character.”
“so does starvation,” lexie mumbled.
“you’re literally eating my pretzels.”
“yeah, and they suck.”
across from them, brooklyn was trying to braid ezerela’s hair, while karlee and yoonchae were playing some word game on an ipad. it was the chillest i’d seen the group in months.
and then, of course — iliya had to open her mouth.
she leaned across the aisle, her tone too casual to actually be casual. “so, hannah. still surprised you made it through the first cut.”
megan froze mid-bite, eyes flicking to me.
i looked at iliya, forcing a tiny smile. “oh, totally. i wake up shocked every morning.”
her eyebrow twitched. “guess the judges like… surprises.”
megan jumped in before i could say something worse. “yeah, they also like talent, but you wouldn’t know much about that.”
the group went quiet for a beat — and then manon snorted, trying to cover it with her hand.
iliya rolled her eyes and turned back toward her seat, mumbling something about “so immature.”
megan leaned over, whispering, “i swear to god, one day i’m gonna 'accidentally' step on her foot.”
we both started laughing so hard we had to hide our faces.
that’s when i felt someone tug at my sleeve. i turned — dani, hair messy, eyes still sleepy.
“you left me,” she said, voice raspy.
“you were drooling,” i said.
“liar.”
“swear on my life.”
she rolled her eyes and dropped into the empty seat next to me. and without hesitation, she swung her legs over my lap like it was the most normal thing in the world.
dani cracked one eye open. “what are we even doing?”
“trying to survive,” i said.
“mission two better be worth it,” manon muttered, tossing a cookie crumb at yoonchae. “there’s only six final spots and i’m already planning my villain arc.”
“make it dramatic,” sophie said. “throw a chair.”
“no one’s throwing chairs,” lexie groaned.
“yet,” megan added.
somewhere between the turbulence, the exhaustion, and dani’s legs still half over mine, it hit me again — this weird jolt in my stomach that i didn’t hate.
dani nudged me. “what are you smiling about?”
“nothing.”
she raised an eyebrow. “liar.”
maybe i was.
we went back to our seats after everyone started dozing off. megan and emily had moved to the row in front of us, claiming it “had better energy,” which meant they just wanted to gossip without getting told to shut up.
dani dropped into the aisle seat beside me, yawning. i flipped through the tiny touch screen in front of us.
“what are we watching?” she mumbled.
“crazy rich asians.”
she blinked at me. “never seen it.”
i turned my whole body toward her. “you’re kidding.”
“why is everyone so shocked by that?”
“because it’s a cultural moment, dani. you can’t call yourself human and not have seen it.”
she smirked, leaning back. “fine. sell it to me.”
“glamour, betrayal, food, weddings, rich people crying. what else do you need?”
“sold.”
i started the movie on both of our screens. “okay. we have to sync it or i’ll actually lose my mind. ready? three, two, one—play.”
she missed the button.
“seriously?”
“you counted too fast!”
after a few rounds of false starts and me swearing under my breath, we finally managed to line them up. the opening scene hit at the same second and i threw my arms up. “we did it.”
“the accomplishment of the century,” she deadpanned.
fifteen minutes in, the cabin lights dimmed again. the air had that recycled smell of coffee and gum. megan twisted around in her seat. “that’s the part where everyone cries,” she whispered.
“go to sleep,” dani said.
“i can’t. lexie keeps giggling.”
i leaned forward a little. lexie and sophie were across the aisle, watching something on her phone, shoulders touching, heads tilted toward each other. they looked soft — like the world around them didn’t exist. sophie said something that made lexie hide her face and laugh. it was kind of stupidly cute.
i turned back to my screen, trying not to smile.
at some point, dani pulled out her phone. she bought the plane wifi, then started typing. i didn’t think much of it until i saw the name pop up at the top of the screen: alex ❤️.
my stomach sank.
she was smiling at her phone, the quiet kind of smile people don’t fake. typing, pausing, typing again. she’d read whatever he sent, and her whole expression softened.
i pretended to keep watching the movie. couldn’t even focus on the sound. just kept staring at the little reflections on the window.
a few minutes later, she laughed quietly.
“what?” i asked, trying to sound normal.
“he said he’s jealous,” she said, eyes still on the screen. “because i’m in the air and he’s stuck in econ class.”
i nodded. “tragic.”
“he’s such a baby sometimes.”
“you love that, though,” i said before i could stop myself.
she looked at me, surprised. “yeah… i guess i do.”
i tried to smile. didn’t quite make it.
the movie kept playing. she was still texting — small bursts of typing, little laughs under her breath. i sipped some water just to have something to do with my hands.
eventually she put her phone down and looked at me. “sorry. i was being rude.”
“you’re fine.”
“no, i wasn’t. i’ll shut up.”
“seriously, it’s fine,” i said, forcing a light tone. “i’m just emotionally invested in this movie.”
“oh yeah?”
“yeah. rich people problems. very relatable.”
she smiled, resting her head against the seat. “you’re so dramatic.”
“takes one to know one.”
we went quiet again. she leaned toward the window a bit, face half in the glow from the movie. i tried to focus on the screen, but i could still see her reflection — that tiny, relaxed smile.
i hated that it made my chest hurt.
after a while, she dozed off. the phone slipped from her hand into the space between us. i caught it before it fell, and for a second i just held it — alex’s last message still on the screen:
sleep well. love you. can’t wait to see you again.
i set it back down carefully, face-down this time, and stared at the credits rolling on my screen.
i didn’t finish the movie. just sat there, pretending to.
summary: some eliminations and a time jump to the final. and an end to the dream academy phase of this book. not the most accurate (wrote it how i wanted it to go.)

hannah's pov
the morning after eliminations felt like one long exhale.
no music, no chatter, no makeup, no cameras. just the dull sound of zippers and suitcase wheels and people trying not to cry again.
everyone moved slow — like the air itself was heavy.
lexie looked completely spaced out, sitting on her suitcase in the hallway with her hood up, scrolling through her phone but clearly not seeing anything. sophie hovered near her, trying to say something, then giving up and just sitting beside her, knees bumping. they didn’t talk. they didn’t have to.
the bus ride to the airport was dead quiet too. megan had her head against the window. lara had her hood pulled down over her eyes. dani sat next to me, one hand in her lap, the other resting somewhere near my arm — not quite touching but close enough that it still counted.
i was so tired i couldn’t tell if i felt sad or just numb. both, maybe. the kind of tired that sinks into your bones.
brooklyn, karlee, iliya, and mei were already gone — flown home last night. it didn’t feel real yet. half the dorm was empty now.
when the bus stopped at the terminal, nobody said “let’s go” or “we’re here.” we just… got up. quietly.
inside the airport, cameras followed us but no one really played up for them this time. even emily, who could find energy in a blackout, just leaned against a wall, eyes closed.
dani brushed against me as we went through security. it wasn’t on purpose — i think she just wanted the contact. i didn’t mind. i don’t think either of us did anymore.
on the plane, she sat by the window, me in the middle, megan on the aisle. it wasn’t even a discussion — we just ended up that way. lara and emily were in front of us, lexie and sophie behind.
before takeoff, i looked back and saw sophie reach over and squeeze lexie’s hand. lexie squeezed back but didn’t say anything, her eyes half-shut like she hadn’t really woken up since last night.
i turned back around, sighing. dani leaned her head on my shoulder, like she was doing it absentmindedly, and closed her eyes.
“you okay?” i whispered.
“yeah,” she mumbled, voice scratchy. “just… tired.”
i didn’t say anything else. i just let her stay there. her hair smelled like her vanilla shampoo. i watched the lights of the runway blur by until the plane finally lifted.
half an hour in, megan leaned over from the aisle, whispering, “you two are literally attached at the hip now.”
i rolled my eyes. “shut up.”
“no, seriously,” she whispered, smirking. “if she stops touching you for more than ten minutes, she might actually combust.”
lara snorted from the seat ahead. “leave them alone. it’s cute. trauma bonding or whatever.”
“it’s not—” i started, but dani made a small sound against my shoulder, already half-asleep. i shut up.
the rest of the flight blurred together — dim lights, soft breathing, the occasional clink of a cart going by. lexie got up once and stood near the bathroom for a while, staring at the window, and sophie followed a few minutes later. they didn’t talk much, but when they came back, lexie looked a little more like herself.
megan fell asleep leaning on lara. i stared at the seat in front of me, then out the window, then back at dani’s hand resting near mine.
we’d made it through mission 2. but barely.
and something in me — something i couldn’t really name — was terrified of how close we’d gotten.
━━━━━━━━━━
training days all started to blur together after we got back to L.A.
same hallways. same black mirrors. same long rehearsals that made your feet ache in places you didn’t even know existed.
we were deep in prep for mission 3 — the make-or-break one. no one said it out loud, but you could feel it.
by week two, the air in the studio was tense. too many whispered conversations, too many tired faces. but the biggest difference?
lexie hadn’t shown up. not once.
at first everyone assumed she was sick, or injured, or taking a break — but sophie looked wrecked the whole week. she went through rehearsals like a ghost, just kind of… moving, not really there. ezrela too. they kept glancing at the door like maybe she’d suddenly walk in.
she didn’t.
until today.
we were stretching when missy walked in, heels clicking, and the room went dead quiet. everyone straightened up. and behind her — there was lexie.
she looked different. hair pulled back, no makeup, her bag slung over one shoulder like she hadn’t unpacked it since she left.
“girls,” missy started, her voice soft for once, “lexie has something she’d like to tell you all.”
lexie stepped forward, hands twisting together. “hey.” her voice cracked a little, and she laughed under her breath. “um… i just wanted to say that… i’ve decided to leave the program.”
no one moved.
“it’s not because of anyone here,” she said quickly, shaking her head. “i just… i don’t like how things have been handled lately. it doesn’t feel like the program i joined anymore.”
sophie made this tiny sound, barely audible, but enough that everyone looked at her. she was already crying — not loud, just quietly.
lexie tried to smile, but her voice wavered. “i love you guys. seriously. i just need to do what’s right for me.”
missy nodded, gave her shoulder a light squeeze, and told us to take ten minutes. maybe more.
sophie and ezrela didn’t even wait for permission. they were already following lexie out of the room before missy finished talking.
i stayed where i was, cross-legged on the floor, staring through the glass wall that separated the practice studio from the hallway.
outside, the three of them stood close together — lexie with her arms around both of them, sophie’s head buried in her shoulder. ezrela’s usually perfect composure was gone; she was crying openly, no cameras, no pretending.
lexie whispered something, kissed sophie’s cheek, and then pulled away. ezrela covered her face. sophie grabbed her hand.
the door shut behind lexie, and the sound of it — that soft click — felt louder than the music we’d just been rehearsing to.
the choreographer sighed, told us to take the rest of the afternoon off. no one argued.
i sat there for a long time, watching sophie and ezrela walk down the hallway together, their reflections fading in the glass.
and for the first time since mission one, the studio didn’t feel like a place people came to chase dreams.
it felt like somewhere people came to break a little bit at a time.
━━━━━━━━━━
(time skip)
the room was way too bright.
that kind of studio light that makes everything look fake — like the cameras are catching every pore, every nervous twitch. the producers always said it was “for clarity,” but it just made everyone feel exposed.
we were lined up in our stupid perfect rows again. same setup, different mission.
only this time, the stakes felt heavier. everyone knew it.
mission 3 was brutal. new choreography every two days, live vocals, cameras in your face while you’re gasping for breath. half of us hadn’t slept in forever.
missy walked out with that folder — the one we all hated.
you could hear the air shift.
“today,” she said, “three girls will be leaving the program.”
that sentence hit like a punch.
she started calling names.
“lara.”
safe. she let out this shaky breath and squeezed yoonchae’s hand.
“megan.”
safe. she mouthed holy shit and clapped her hands over her face.
“yoonchae.”
safe. she grinned — like full sunshine grin.
“dani.”
my chest unclenched for half a second when she jumped up and hugged me tight. i could feel her heart pounding against mine.
then—
“sophia.”
safe.
“ezrela.”
safe. she didn’t even smile — just stared down, like she couldn’t believe it.
“hannah.”
safe.
i didn’t even hear the rest of the names right away — just the sound of dani screaming and pulling me into her. “you made it, bitch!” she laughed, half crying, half shaking. i buried my face in her shoulder. we both smelled like hairspray and nerves.
“emily.”
safe.
“samara.”
safe.
“marquise.”
safe.
then the silence hit again.
there were only three names left.
sophie, nayoung, celeste.
missy looked up, voice calm like she wasn’t about to shatter someone’s entire world.
“for the rest of you… your journey ends here.”
the room just broke.
sophie nodded before anyone could say anything — like she’d already decided. she gave a little half-smile, her eyes glassy. “yeah. that’s… that’s okay,” she said, voice cracking. “i think i’m ready.”
nayoung covered her face. celeste just stood there frozen, shaking her head.
megan started crying first. then lara. even dani, who never cried for herself, had tears running down her cheeks.
i hugged sophie so hard she almost fell forward. “you were so good,” i whispered. she laughed wetly. “thanks, hannah. go win this shit, yeah?”
when the cameras cut, it got even messier. everyone was crying, hugging, trying to say the right thing. no one knew what to do with their hands.
sophie looked lighter somehow. sad, but calm. “i think i just need to go home,” she said, more to herself than anyone else.
by the time she walked off set, the air felt weirdly empty — like the whole room exhaled and forgot how to breathe again.
missy told us we had ten minutes before filming the reactions. dani grabbed my hand and didn’t let go.
we both laughed through tears, sitting on the floor. “holy fuck,” she said, wiping her eyes. “we’re still here.”
“yeah,” i breathed, trying to smile. “we’re still fucking here.”
━━━━━━━━━━
daniela's pov -> the final voting (BIGGGG time skip)
the lights were blinding. the kind that make you squint even when you’re smiling. cameras everywhere. makeup already cracking from the hours under heat and nerves.
we were lined up again — eleven of us left. the final night.
months of training, tears, bruises, and fights all crashing down into this single stage.
the MC's voice echoed through the speakers.
“thank you, girls, for your hard work, your spirit, your passion.”
i could barely hear her over the pounding in my ears.
i reached for hannah’s hand and she grabbed mine immediately, her fingers cold. she didn’t say anything — just stared straight ahead.
then, the big screen behind us lit up.
the final lineup of KATSEYE.
my stomach dropped.
“the first member of KATSEYE…”
pause. the music swelled.
“SOPHIA!”
the crowd went wild. sophia covered her mouth, tears spilling instantly as she walked forward. the rest of us clapped, hugged her, tried to smile.
“the second member…”
“LARA!”
lara gasped, shaking, her hands flying to her face. yoonchae hugged her so hard she almost toppled over.
“the third member…”
“YOONCHAE!”
of course. she was born for this. confident, glowing, the kind of presence that just fit.
i kept squeezing hannah’s hand tighter each time a name was called.
“the fourth member…”
“MEGAN!”
megan screamed — full-body scream — and ran forward, jumping in place. i could barely breathe.
“the fifth member…”
“DANIELA!”
i froze. my name echoed. it didn’t even feel real.
for half a second i couldn’t move, and then hannah shoved me, laughing breathlessly. “go!” she said, eyes shining even though hers were tearing up.
i stumbled forward, hugging megan, lara, sophia, yoonchae. my legs felt like jelly.
and then—
“the sixth and final member…”
everything went silent. i turned around slowly, looking at hannah. she wasn’t breathing.
the MC's voice came again.
“MANON!”
cheering. clapping. flashes. confetti.
but it all sounded muted.
hannah stood there, still smiling — that polite, practiced smile — but i saw it. the flicker in her eyes. she bit her lip and nodded, trying so hard to keep it together.
i wanted to go to her. right there. just grab her hand and pull her up with us.
it felt wrong. incomplete.
and then the MC spoke again.
“the judges… have made one more decision.”
everyone froze.
she looked down at her card, paused.
“we will be adding one more member to KATSEYE.”
megan’s jaw dropped. my heart started slamming again.
the MC smiled.
“HANNAH.”
the room exploded.
hannah’s eyes went wide — she gasped, hands flying to her mouth. for a second she didn’t even move, like her brain hadn’t caught up. then she started crying — like really crying, shoulders shaking as she hugged emily, ezrela, marquise, samara — all the girls who didn’t make it. they were all smiling through tears, pulling her in.
and then she ran — right to us.
i didn’t even wait — i met her halfway and crushed her in a hug, arms wrapped around her neck. she buried her face in my shoulder, still shaking.
“you fucking did it,” i whispered.
she laughed through her tears. “we fucking did it.”
the lights hit, the confetti fell, and the announcer yelled the name one last time:
“KATSEYE!”
and just like that, it was real.
the seven of us standing there, crying, laughing, holding onto each other like we’d never let go.
━━━━━━━━━━
hannah's pov
backstage was chaos.
but like… the soft kind. the kind where everyone’s crying, laughing, hugging, the lights still flickering somewhere behind the curtains. confetti was stuck in my hair and down my hoodie, and my makeup was probably a wreck, but i didn’t care.
i still couldn’t believe it.
seven. they said seven.
me.
i was in.
it didn’t feel real until i saw matthew, my brother.
he was standing just past the edge of the curtain, his face already red from crying — which, obviously, made me start crying all over again.
“oh my god—” i barely got it out before i ran straight into him.
he caught me mid-sprint, lifting me off the ground and spinning me around.
“i told you,” he said into my hair, his voice cracking. “i fucking told you, hannah.”
i started laughing, crying, both. “yeah, well, i didn’t believe you.”
then i heard her.
“there’s my girl!”
aunt jill pushed through the people behind him, waving her phone around like she was filming everything for facebook. she looked exactly the same — messy bun, mom jeans, huge grin.
i hugged her next, burying my face in her shoulder. she smelled like her same old vanilla lotion and cheap perfume.
“jij hebt het gedaan jongen,” she said quietly. “you actually did it.”
and then i just stood there for a second — my whole body buzzing, my eyes stinging. matthew threw an arm around both of us and said, “okay, so we’re gonna brag about this forever, right?”
“blijkbaar,” i said, smiling through my tears.
i turned and saw dani across the room, surrounded by her family. i hadn’t even realized i was walking toward her until i was halfway there.
she turned at the same time, her face lighting up. “hannah!”
she ran to me, pulling me into another hug — tighter than before, both of us laughing like idiots.
“we actually fucking did it,” she said against my shoulder.
“yeah,” i said. “we actually did.”
and then a voice called out from behind her — deeper, familiar from her stories.
“dani!”
i looked up just in time to see her break into this full, radiant smile.
“alex!” she said, and before i could even react, she was running — like full sprint — into his arms.
he picked her up easily, spinning her around. people clapped. it was stupidly cinematic.
and me? i just… stood there. smiling, because what else was i supposed to do?
she turned after a second, still glowing. “oh! hannah, come here.”
i walked over, trying to play it cool even though i felt like my stomach was doing backflips.
“this is alex,” she said, grinning. “alex, this is hannah — my best friend, and the one i told you about.”
he looked at me — this short little glance up and down, polite smile.
“hey,” he said. “you’re the dancer, right?”
“uh, yeah,” i said. “one of them, i guess.”
he nodded. “dani talks about you a lot.”
i laughed a little. “good things, i hope.”
he didn’t answer right away. “yeah,” he said finally, still smiling, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
i looked over at dani — she didn’t notice, still beaming.
and for a second, i felt this weird shift in my chest. that quiet little ache that shows up when you know you’re supposed to be happy for someone, and you are, but something about it stings anyway.
later, dani pulled me over to meet her parents.
“this is my mom and dad,” she said, tugging on my arm.
her mom immediately grabbed my hands, eyes wide. “oh my goodness, you’re hannah! we’ve heard so much about you!”
her dad laughed. “finally meeting the famous roommate.”
“famous?” i said, smiling awkwardly.
“in this household? yes,” her mom said. “daniela won’t shut up about you.”
i glanced over at dani, who groaned and rolled her eyes. “mom.”
they both laughed. her dad clapped me on the shoulder — a little too hard but in that sweet, proud-parent way.
“you’re family now,” he said.
and that made something in me go still. because they meant it. they meant it.
i smiled, softer this time. “thank you. seriously.”
the rest of the night blurred together — group photos, tears, interviews. at one point, dani and i ended up sitting on the floor backstage, backs against a wall, shoes off, heads tilted back, just breathing.
the lights outside were dimming. someone was sweeping up confetti. i could still taste the adrenaline, the hairspray, the disbelief.
dani looked over at me, tired smile tugging at her lips. “so,” she said, voice low, “are we ready for this?”
i turned my head to look at her. her hair was a mess, mascara smudged under her eyes, still glowing somehow.
“no,” i said honestly.
she laughed, the kind that shakes her shoulders. “same.”
and for a moment, it was quiet.
the show, the noise, the people — it all faded.
just us.
━━━━━━━━━━
the parking lot lights were that weird orange that makes everything feel too quiet, even when people are laughing.
we’d all just changed out of our show clothes — oversized hoodies, sweats, sneakers. my hair was down now, messy from all the confetti and sweat, and it felt good to breathe real air again.
megan was walking a little ahead of us, swinging her car keys. manon had a bag of chips already open even though we hadn’t even gotten to 7-eleven yet. sophia and lara were talking softly behind me about how surreal it all felt — how the show was actually over, how this wasn’t a dream.
megan turned around, walking backward. “okay, but we’re all getting slurpees, right? like, no excuses. we earned this.”
“obviously,” i said. “we’re stars now.”
she snorted. “barely. we’re broke stars.”
we laughed — that tired, loopy kind of laugh that comes after crying too much.
then i glanced toward the far end of the lot — just out of habit, maybe — and i saw her.
dani.
by a silver car.
her arms looped around alex’s neck, his hands on her waist. their heads tilted, shadows shifting under the flickering parking light — and then they kissed.
and for a second, the air left my lungs.
it wasn’t even dramatic. it wasn’t like in movies where the world stops spinning. it was quieter than that — like everything in me just folded in.
she looked happy. so happy.
i stood there, frozen, trying not to make it obvious that I was staring.
megan must’ve followed my gaze because she slowed down beside me, and when she saw what i was looking at, she didn’t say anything. she just got it.
without a word, she slipped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me close, her voice low.
“hey,” she said. “come on. slurpees.”
i swallowed hard, forcing a small smile. “yeah. slurpees.”
as we walked toward the street, i could still feel it — that dull, stupid ache that sits right behind your ribs. i hated how it lingered. i hated that it made me jealous when i knew i shouldn’t be.
megan kept her arm around me, and i was weirdly grateful for it — she didn’t ask, didn’t push, just knew.
7-eleven was lit up like las vegas against the dark street.
the five of us stepped inside, instantly hit by the smell of sugar and coffee and cold air from the slurpee machines.
“i swear these lights are brighter than the stage ones,” manon said, shielding her eyes.
“you’re just tired,” sophia replied, yawning.
lara was already grabbing a basket full of snacks — chips, sour candy, two chocolate milks for some reason.
megan let go of me and grabbed a blue raspberry cup. “what are you getting?”
“uh… coke,” i said. “classic.”
“boring,” she teased. “you’re supposed to celebrate, not do your taxes.”
i laughed softly. “you sound like my cousin.”
megan looked up from the machine, eyebrow raised. “you have a cousin?”
“yeah,” i said, grinning a little. “her name’s mikey.”
“mikey?”
“short for michelle,” i said. “but she’d kill you if you called her that.”
megan chuckled. “i already like her.”
“you would love her,” i said, suddenly brighter. “she’s seventeen, total baddie. like, gorgeous and hilarious and kind of intimidating in that way where you’re like—should i be scared or in love? maybe both.”
megan grinned, handing me a straw. “sounds like my type.”
“yeah, i was literally just thinking that.”
she smirked. “set us up then. i need new friends who aren’t just crying in studios 24/7.”
“deal,” i said, nudging her. “but i’m warning you—she’s gonna roast you to death.”
“please,” megan said, mock-flipping her hair. “that's not possible.”
by the time we paid and walked back out, it had started to drizzle — light, soft, barely-there rain. the air smelled like wet pavement and gasoline.
we were quiet again, but it wasn’t sad this time. just… spent. the kind of silence that feels okay.
i looked back once, just out of habit. the silver car was gone.
megan caught me doing it and bumped my shoulder. “hey. you good?”
i nodded slowly. “yeah. i think so.”
she studied me for a second, then smiled. “good. ‘cause you just made it into a global girl group, bitch. no time for heartbreak.”
i laughed, shaking my head. “shut up.”
“nah,” she said, bumping me again. “you’re gonna be fine. trust me.”
and i did.
as we walked down the street under the 7-eleven lights, our slurpees in hand, i could still feel that tiny ache somewhere deep down — but it was quieter now. softer.
like it knew it wasn’t gonna win.
