Layering paint is a common art-making technique, but Hannah Jensen takes this approach to another level in her creative practice. The New Zealand-based artist uses printmaking techniques like intaglio, etching, and carving to reveal complex designs from boards that are covered with dozens of layers of acrylic paint.
With a background in printmaking and a love for painting, this unique art form felt like a natural next step for Jenson after graduating from university. She begins each piece by applying between 20 and 80 layers of paint onto a wooden board, which contains the full range of colors that will make up the final design. After all of the layers have dried, Jensen uses her tools to carefully scrape away the paint in the desired locations and at the right depth. In this way, she creates varied forms with texture and depth.
Many of Jenson's most striking works feature detailed depictions of flowers and different species of animals. She is able to render a variety of textures by chipping away at the paint with more or less force, which in turn affects the amount of paint revealed from the underlayers. The results of this meticulous process are worth it, however, as each design is so vivid that it appears to pop off the board.
You can purchase original art via Jensen's online store, and see what she's up to next by following the artist on Instagram.

She is a New Zealand artist with a funky way of creating her art. She is a paint carver. She layers acrylic paint on canvas and after allowing it to dry she carves into it using Lino cutting tools to create her pieces. To add depth to each piece after she is done such as shading, she returns back to using watered down acrylic paint to the desired area.
Hannah is an artist I have followed for a couple of years and I wanted to at least try her technique of layering and carving into acrylic paint. So over that last few weeks I have applied approximately 40 layers (I may have lost count by a couple) to a small canvas I had lying around. I had no exact design in mind while going into this I just wanted to know a couple of things from this experience. One I wanted to see how difficult it would be to form precise cuts into the paint. Two I just wanted to know how it felt to cut into the paint, like was it similar to cutting into rubber or was it hard like plaster.
After doing the carving I definitely found it was more difficult than she makes it look which I had expected. Also I made the mistake of starting my carving to soon after the last layer was applied. I think it needs to set for nearly 48hours before you begin this step. It takes a lot of patience and time to create one piece which I am amazed with and now looking back at her pieces are in even more amazement.
It turned out a bit of a mess but was very therapeutic to carve into.

This week, Jillian introduces us to Hannah Jensen, an artist from New Zealand known for her carvings, in "Acrylic Carving"
Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great week! Now, if you’re like me, you might be used to stereotypical forms of art: painting, drawing, ceramics, etc. These are what we are most exposed to because they are more traditional. What I love about this blog is that I find myself actively looking for cool things to share with you all, whether it’s a new artist or a new style I’ve never seen before.…

This is a skateboard. Hannah Jensen, an artist in New Zealand, covered it with 57 layers of paint. Then, drawing upon her background in printmaking, cut away selected layers until she was left with this eye-popping image of a kingfisher on the hunt. In an interview for Museum Week, Jensen succinctly described her technique as "textural and topographical." This video shows Jensen at work. You can see more examples of her finished products on her Instagram page.-via My Modern Met...
