Norwegian Hans Langseth (1846-1927) grew his first beard when he was nineteen, to enter the local beard growing competition. After that he let it grow and grow. Though beard hair can only grow about four or five feet before dying off, Langseth matted the dead hair together in a coil, like that of today's dreadlocks, to further lengthen and strengthen his beard. He spent time as a circus act with his beard until he ceased to be respected, and than he stuck to farming, his natural occupation. Here is the only known film footage of him, from 1923.
