She hadn't wanted to attend the party. But Anna, irrepressible as she was, had insisted they go.
"You need to meet new people, Elsa," she said as she tugged on her sister's arm. "We need to meet new people. Expand our circle of friends."
"My circle of friends is quite expansive as it is."
"Tumblr friends don't count."
"I never said – "
Anna laughed. "Oh, come on." The redhead squeezed Elsa's hands. "It's only cousin Rapunzel's New Year's bash. We have to go anyway. Look, we'll just show up fashionably late, have a drink or two, talk to Punzie, and then we'll leave? Please?" She pouted.
Elsa, faced with the puppy-dog pout, had no choice but to agree.
That evening, Elsa found herself regretting her decision for the thousandth time. "I regret this decision," she said for the thousand-and-first time when they inched open the front door – which was already ajar to begin with – and a wall of sound greeted them.
"You'll change your tune when you've had a drink," replied Anna automatically. She, unlike Elsa, hadn't been keeping count of the number of times she'd said it.
"Anna! Elsha! You made it!" A giggling Rapunzel detached herself from a group of older men, pressing drinks into her cousins' hands.
Anna grinned and hugged her. "Of course we did – we wouldn't miss our favourite cousin's new year bash."
"Our only cousin."
"Thash right," said Rapunzel firmly. "Only and besh coushun."
"How much have you been drinking, Punzie?"
"Losh count." The younger girl dissolved into another fit of giggles. "S'okay, I don't need to drive home afshterwardsh."
Anna squinted into the mass of people wedged into the tiny apartment. "Where's Eugene?"
Elsa pointed at the kitchen. "I think he's the one passed out in the dishwasher."
"I'll go fish him out before he drownsh." Rapunzel pushed off from Anna, using the boost to carry herself in the direction of the kitchen. "Have a drink, it'sh Eugene's speshul jungle juish!" she called as she left.
The redhead sipped cautiously and pulled a face. "I think mine still has the gorilla."
Elsa's cheeks were already hot from a mouthful; she had never been one for alcohol, and the concoction probably contained more than she had ever consumed in a single night. "I'm not drinking this."
Anna was already chugging her drink, and the blonde sighed.
"It's a good thing we can just walk home, yeah?"
"Sure," giggled Anna. Her face now matched her hair.
"And now that we've had that drink and said hi to Punzie, we can go now?" said Elsa hopefully.
"Of course, Elsa, I'll – oh, look, is that Cindy?"
The older girl groaned inwardly as Anna scooted over to say hi. There went her chances of getting home early and spending a quiet night in. "Anna, wait – "
But the redhead was gone. Elsa briefly entertained the thought of following her into the crowd, but changed her mind when a bunch of guys started playing beer pong in the middle, and heard Anna's voice demand to join. It was clear that her sister wouldn't be ready to leave for a while.
She decided to let Anna have her fun. It had been a while, after all, since she had seen the redhead laugh like that. Elsa would wait the night out and drag Anna away when the opportunity presented itself.
Elsa found herself a waiting spot awkwardly wedged in a corner. Abandoning her jungle juice, she found an empty cup and filled it with tap water.
"… Elsa?"
It was amazing how the noise of the party faded away to nothing when she heard that voice. "Hans," she responded icily, spinning on her heel to face him.
Anna's ex-boyfriend looked equally out of place. His hair was a little long and messy, but his sideburns were immaculately trimmed as always. More surprisingly, he was dressed in a crumpled shirt and jeans; she had never seen him dressed this casually.
A group of laughing girls pushed past him, and he ended up squeezing into her already-tight space; Hans was looking everywhere except at her, and his face was flushed. She wasn't sure if it was the alcohol.
The instant the space was clear, he backed away from her. "Sorry," he muttered.
"It's fine." Elsa could sense his nervousness; it was strange, given that he had been nothing but smooth charm when he was dating Anna. "Are you leaving soon?"
"Hmm? Yeah, I'm just waiting for my designated driver," he said, holding up the plastic cup in his hand. "Eugene pressed it on me. Said it was his own jungle juice blend."
Elsa pulled a face. "Yeah, Rapunzel warned me about it. There's more alcohol in that than the stock of most bars." Holding up her own plastic cup, she added, "Tap water – I don't want anyone topping up my empty glass, and I could always pass it off as vodka."
It was easy to forget he was part of their group of friends, and his break-up with Anna didn't mean she would be seeing the last of him.
He laughed. "Brilliant as always." The laughter died away as he sniffed his cup cautiously. "That explains why I feel like a truck hit me. Twice." Despite the remark, Hans took another sip, prompting a raised eyebrow from Elsa. "And you?"
"Actually, Anna and I were just leaving but she ran into a group of her friends and stopped to chat."
The mention of Anna's name caused a flicker to pass over Hans' face, but it was gone before Elsa could identify it. "Oh. I see." He looked away. "Is she… is she doing okay?"
"Yeah, she is."
"Oh. Good."
A burst of raucous and very drunk laughter from the next room made Elsa wince. "I'm going out to get some fresh air," she mumbled, making for the balcony.
Much to her chagrin, he followed. "Yeah, I'll come with you."
The winter air was sharp but refreshing; she took a deep breath, feeling her head clear. Hans leaned on the railing. "You know, I've always loved the view from here." The city sprawled before them, and Elsa found herself agreeing with him.
"I know. You've said it before." It was the first time she'd met him, when Rapunzel and Eugene threw a housewarming party, and Anna had introduced him to the others. She hadn't paid much attention to him; the occasion was only the second time she'd brought her own boyfriend to her friends' gatherings.
It was amazing how fast things changed; both she and Anna were single, and her cousin was engaged.
Hans cleared his throat to fill the silence. "Ah." He looked down at the cup in his hand as though noticing it for the first time. "Does she talk about me?"
Elsa frowned. "She's not seeing anyone at the moment, if that's what you're asking."
"I – no! I'm not. I just…" Pausing to pinch the bridge of his nose, he continued; "Look. I know what I did was wrong, and I'm sorry I hurt her."
"And dating her just to get to her best friend isn't supposed to hurt at all."
Hans flinched. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry doesn't cure anything." Elsa had lost count of the nights when Anna would cry herself to sleep, asking all the questions she had never wanted to hear from her little sister: Was it me? Did I do something wrong? Why would he do that?
She hadn't known what to say as she held Anna and stroked her hair; even now, she was still at a loss for words. Seeing Hans wasn't helping the situation at all.
He exhaled; in the cold air, it came as a huge rush of condensation. "You have every right to hate me. But…"
"But what?" She prepared herself for the self-pitying, the justifications for his behavior, his side of the story.
"It wasn't Merida I wanted."
"Wait, what?"
"It was never her," he said, shaking his head. "Merida's a great person, but she's not who I wanted."
Elsa blinked, thrown off balance. "Not Merida? Then?"
"Anna is an amazing girl." Fumbling with the pockets of his jeans, he pulled out a pack of gum, holding it out to her. "Since when do you chew gum?" asked Elsa, annoyed he was trying to change the subject.
"Since I quit smoking." When she didn't take the gum, he shrugged and unwrapped a stick for himself, popping it into his mouth.
"You quit?"
"Clean for three months."
"Oh." She hadn't liked it that he smoked; Elsa hated the ash and the second-hand smoke, and made a big fuss of spraying air freshener in their flat whenever Hans came over. Anna insisted it was cool. Typical Anna.
He chewed furiously on his gum before speaking. "She was too good for me, really. But we got along really well, had a good time."
"I didn't mean to lead her on like that," he said softly, "but she had it in her head that I was asking her to be my steady girlfriend, we were going to get married after graduation and have kids, like after a month of casual dating – she's your sister, but you know how she is."
Elsa fidgeted. "Yeah." Her little sister had always been a hopeless romantic since young, eagerly devouring their books of fairytales and filling her childhood journals with descriptions of her dream man. In fact, when Anna had introduced Hans to her, Elsa had thought she was rushing things. He was the first man to show an interest in her, and in typical Anna fashion, she had let her fantasies run wild.
In spite of Anna's flaws, she was still very much Elsa's little sister, and she would stick up for her no matter what. "But that still doesn't excuse your being a jerk," she said sharply.
Hans ran a hand through his hair. "I just – it was really overwhelming, you know what I mean? I wasn't looking to start a serious relationship yet, and then boom, Anna comes along in this whirlwind of energy and charm and I just got carried away." He threw up both hands. "Still. You're right. That doesn't excuse the immature way I handled the situation."
She resisted the urge to make a snide comment.
"In retrospect, I fucked up," he concluded moodily.
"You broke up with her at her sorority party, in front of everyone."
"Yeah, definitely fucked up."
Elsa studied him carefully. This apologetic Hans was something new. He had always been a cocksure charmer, full of himself, never without a ready comeback or witty one-liner.
She wasn't sure if this new attitude made him worthy of her trust.
"I could spend my whole life atoning for what I did and it wouldn't be enough."
Elsa raised an eyebrow. "You sound as though you tried to kill her."
That got a reluctant chuckle from him. "Social homicide is pretty serious." He fumbled for his gum wrapper, spitting out the wad of gum and tucking it back into his pocket.
She started suddenly. "So who was it?"
"… Wait, what?"
"The girl you liked."
He glanced at her. She stared back.
"That girl."
"Yes."
Again he patted his pockets, and cursed silently when they came up empty. "I keep forgetting I'm clean."
"Stop changing the subject." Elsa moved closer. "If not Merida, who was it?"
"You." It was so faint, she could have sworn it was noise from indoors, and not from the man in front of her determinedly not looking in her direction.
"… What?"
"You," repeated Hans. His drink was spilling, the cup in his hands tilting dangerously, but he was oblivious to it. "It's always been you, right from the start."
"I don't understand – " she began.
"Last summer, at the freshman orientation party. You walked in with Anna and some other girls, and I couldn't take my eyes off you." He took a swig from his drink. "But you were always so distant and aloof, or you were talking to someone else. Anna was the friendly, talkative one; she saw me looking at you and thought I was interested in her."
"Anna's wonderful. Funny, cute, with the kindest heart I'd ever seen. I was going to make us work, but when I got to know you through her… well." He lifted his cup, found it was empty, and tossed it into the snow. "I'm an asshole, aren't I? Is that what you're going to say?"
Elsa couldn't speak. Her mind was buzzing from his words. "Me?" she eventually squeaked.
Hans' eyes crinkled into a smile. His face, she noted, was almost as red as his hair. "Yeah."
The house behind them rumbled as voices took up the familiar countdown. Fireworks painted the sky with splashes of colour, the distant booming drowning out the cheers from behind them.
"Happy new year, Elsa," he said.
She only nodded.
Hans pushed himself away from the railing with a grunt. "I think the party will be wrapping up soon. I should go find Eric – he'll be waiting for me."
Elsa opened her mouth to say something. "Hans, I…"
"You don't have to say anything." He was swaying slightly on his feet. "I'm drunk, I've said too much, and I need to go home and sleep it off so I can regret everything the next morning."
"That's true, but…"
"But what?"
She stepped closer, cupping his face in her hands and drawing him down for a kiss. Hans stiffened with surprise; but before he could kiss her back, Elsa was already moving away.
"Don't read too much into that," she said, cheeks pinking. "Happy new year."
Elsa slipped into the house, leaving him standing there.

I've pretty consistently been INFP/INFJ... it's been pretty split down the middle, although with these descriptions, I'm really leaning more towards INFJ.
"INFPs are absolute idealists: they have values inside them which they really want to live by. This makes them good at encouraging other people's growth, but can cause them to be too hard on themselves. They can be shy and reserved, but they're incredibly passionate and intelligent individuals with an innate need to change the world."
INFJs are private, preferring one-on-one friendships to crowds, and often quiet about their own feelings. They are often thoughtful, artistic, and wise, and prefer to operate behind the scenes.
INFP characters:
Sasha Braus from Attack on Titan
Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender
Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter
Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon
Raleigh Becket from Pacific Rim
INFJ characters:
Armin Arlert from Attack on Titan
Yue and Roku from Avatar: The Last Airbender
Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda
Mako Mori from Pacific Rim
Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb (hell yeah)
Blake Belladonna from RWBY
I can honestly conclude that I think I'm a good mix of the both of them. Or mainly just Doofenshmirtz.
I'll tag wxsteria, ladxnga, hans-sanitiser, shelbyofmanytrades, and... uhh... idk
