Henry King | His Brother’s Girl
Chocolate eyes, soft skin, when she spoke, he heard angels. Henry King had a drug long before cocaine. Tanzie Reed gave him a high he couldn’t subdue. Nothing could compare to the way she made him feel when they were alone, to what her lips did to his body, to what her touch provoked in him. Tanzie Reed is his true addiction, and when she left, everything went dark.
The snowy white powder he became so attached to was a weak substitute for the real thing. His highs were too fleeting, and he always craved more. His as his anger, envy and addiction brewed, his outbursts became more frequent. Each job he took became increasingly violent until his high and temper became so overwhelming he couldn’t stop punching. Blood on his hands, and a dark laugh emerging from deep inside, Henry saw the monster he became, but didn’t care enough to stop it.
With each blow he dealt, Henry rarely said a word. His victims begged for him to stop, blood mixing with tears on their faces, but he saw nothing but red. The desire, no, the need was blinding. All Henry could envision were Zach’s hands on her waist, her lips on his, while their whispered “I love you’s” reverberated in his ears.
Rehab may have subdued his addictions, but nothing could erase the difficult truth.
Steely blue eyes haunted Henry’s vision at night. The sober guilt he felt were nightmare inducing. He loved his brother, and Zach always loved and protected him, but how many times could he imagine his murder before that point became moot? On the surface, Henry blames the drugs for his betrayals. The coke brainwashed him, turning his love for Tanzie into a hatred for Zach, but in his bones he knows the bitterness was there long before a girl ever came between them.
Older, more important, Henry could help but idolize and resent Zachary King. The king of Kings, Zach was given the responsibility, the power, the trust of their grandfather. Birth order was a bitch he couldn’t control. Everything was out of Henr y’s hands, and nothing frustrated him more.
Dealing is a way to gain some of that control back. Day in and day out, he’s surrounded by his weakness. The white gold he loved and hated taunted him constantly. With it in his hands, he could prove himself; he could prove that he’s stronger than his desires, that exposure would make him stronger.
Tanzie, however, was a different story.
Though both were forbidden to him, Henry would always be hung up on his brother’s drug and his brother’s girl.
