3 ways to create a happier workplace
Wonderful Wednesdays January 29, 2020 Do you look forward to your day in the office? Do you feel appreciated at work? Does everyone in your office get along? Is there an overwhelming dread around being at work? Many of us don’t jump for joy at the thought of Monday morning. There are many other things we would rather be doing than going to work. This is especially true when there is a negative atmosphere in the office. It is so hard to get up and go to a job you hate, to be surrounded by negative people. Over the years I have noticed some really small things that make a huge difference in the work atmosphere. We spend more than half of our lives in our workplace. I feel that any small steps taken to make our days better are well worth it. Some employers are catching on and are doing more to show their appreciation for their employees. This is great, I wish all corporations would learn the basics in human compassion and show a little in their businesses. As employees or managers there are things that we can do to bring the team together. When you have the second family feeling about your office, it’s much easier to be productive and happy. Going to work means supporting that family like relationship as well as getting your job done. When you’re a team, you rely on each other and are in it together. Now, I’m not saying that all offices run projects together and do things as a group. I’m saying you all go to the same building to the job you are paid to do, why not have a happier atmosphere. Here are some things that I have seen make a happier office setting that your clients can see too! Coffee: Everyone taking turns bringing in coffee for everyone to enjoy is a great way to give to each other. Sitting at a desk all day is hard. Being able to get up and fill your cup of coffee and say hi to fellow co-workers can raise productivity. Picture and Events corkboard: I saw this at an office I recently visited. The employees would share their photos of grandkids as well as post charities and other events that they supported. Other employees had started joining the same events and there were pics of that too. I noticed the office had a friendly feel to it, everyone seemed happy to be there. Monthly office lunch: I’ve worked at 2 places that did this. One was in the food service industry where once a month we would create our own pizza ideas and share them during our employee meeting. The other place was an office setting and we would have a monthly lunch meeting. In both settings we were planning our month in the business with a more laid-back environment. In both places that did this, the employees felt more included and enjoyed working for these companies. These are 3 simple inexpensive ways that we can create a happier workplace. As a business owner the cost of turnover is a huge expense. If taking some small steps can make your current employees happier and more productive is that a win, win. As an employee; is this something you would like? Do you have other ideas that your office would benefit from? Take them to your boss and see if he/she is up for having happier employees. If you are unsure about it talk to your fellow employees about taking turns. Read the full article
