The Weight of Worlds

AU loosely based on the Greek myth of Atlas; the Galra are Titans, the Alteans are Olympians, Shiro just can’t win, and Keith will always do anything he can for Shiro. Prompt by the lovely @jaja-han~~ 

Champion. Black Paladin. Guardian of the Sky. Every time he earned a new title they told him it was a great honor, but it always felt more like a sentence than anything else. Condemnation perhaps. Though for what he will never be sure. 

The Galra stripped Shiro of everything he had and everything he was. Forced him to partake in their war, to fight with all he had left. When he defied all odds, they chanted his praises and named him Champion while ringing out choruses of “Victory or Death”. What a joke considering he had no choice. Death, he knew it would be death in the end. Then they took his flesh and bone. Remade him in their image. And just when Shiro had accepted his ending, he escaped. 

Only to fall into the hands of the Alteans, sworn enemy to the Galra. They knew Shiro’s reputation and what he had done in the name of their enemy. And without anyone to speak on his behalf, the Alteans sent him to the far reaches of reality to stand watch over the Black Lion. 

You were decisive in battle, fierce to the bitter end. You were destructive in the name of those you served, but you also showed great capacity to protect what you cared for. We can use that. The Black Lion is the pillar between realities, connecting them but holding them separate for eternity. You, Shiro, will become the Black Paladin and stand watch over the Guardian of the Sky. This is an honor far greater than any deserve. 

Time lost all meaning as Shiro tended his post. The Astral Plane is a place few can access, led alone visit. Shiro upheld his duty not knowing for how long it would continue and it weighed on him heavily. Left to himself, Shiro began to wonder whether it was worse to carry this mantle or have been the Galra’s Champion steps away from Death at any moment. The Black Lion was ferocious company when it was company at all, but Shiro gained its trust in increments. 

In what admittedly was not his finest hour, a burst of light and sharp winds whipped Shiro into alert. Rigid in his stance, Shiro watched as a figure shrouded in night entered the plane. 

“What business do you have here?” Shiro asked with as much power as he could force to his voice. 

“I was sent by the Galra to take command of the Black Lion.” the hooded figure answered. 

Shiro’s eyes narrowed and he readied his stance for the coming battle. “I am charged with protecting this great beast. You will not get to it except through me. Even then, you do not stand a chance. The Black Lion will not bond with one who seeks only power.” 

“I know. The Black Lion is not a weapon to be used at one’s whim. It’s not about power. It’s about connecting with the Lion...” 

“..and gaining it’s trust.” Shiro finishes, loosing his stance minutely. “If you are not here to steal the Lion and break the separation between realities, what do you want?” 

At those words the figure lowered his mask. Suddenly disarmed, Shiro takes in the sight of one who is man like him, but something else. Something Galra though he can’t put his finger on how. It goes beyond his clothing, something in his eyes... 

“My name is Keith. I am with an organization of elite fighters who have been working for centuries to take the Galra down from the inside out. I hid myself in their ranks and gained their trust. Enough for them to send me on this mission; they want the Black Lion to win this war. But my organization has heard of your legend, Shiro, and I came here to ask of you to help us end the tyranny tearing our universe apart. You have bonded with the Black Lion?” 

“As much as anyone can, I suppose.” Shiro answers. 

“The other Lions are laying in wait for their leader so that they may restore harmony to this reality.” Keith continues. “All we need now is the Black Lion and one who can pilot it.” 

Shiro gives a great sigh, knowing the costs of this war too well and that there is nothing he can do about it. “It is impossible, Keith. The Black Lion is the pillar between realities. If it is removed, the planes will collide and this war will be the least of our problems.” 

“But that is why I came. You and the Black Lion are needed to save countless lives and worlds. I am prepared to hold these realities apart until such time as the Lion has fulfilled this mission and can return to it’s post.” 

Shiro lets out a gasp at that. Surely this young man does not understand what he is offering. “Keith, once you take on this task, you cannot leave until someone returns to replace you. If the Black Lion is taken or I fail, you will be stuck here for eternity.” 

“It’s a risk I’ve studied and understand. Do you accept this trade or not?”
