HAPPIEST SEASON (2020) DIR. CLEA DUVALL
I'm seeing lots of people being quick to hate on Happiest Season because there are some toxic things that Harper does/says to Abby while at her family home, but I think that considering the toxic environment she grew up in and the fact that she is hiding a massive part of herself and her life, during a stressful time of year (this isn't me condoning her actions), I can see why those things happened.
We don't really get to see a lot of Harper and Abby's relationship away from the family, but seeing how quickly Abby was able to pick up on Harper's changed behaviour, I'd bet that their relationship was previously a healthy one, so insinuating that the movie promotes staying in toxic relationships is a bit narrow minded. Like John said in the film (I'm paraphrasing), the thing everyone's coming out story has in common is the heart racing fear of what's going to happen next. I can certainly relate to experiencing that fear, and I do sympathise with Harper, as well as with Abby for being pushed aside for most of the film.
I do disagree with the people suggesting that Riley was supposed to be a love interest for Abby. I never got the impression that there was any romantic motive behind Riley spending time with Abby. I think that they were able to relate to one another, due to both experiencing a relationship with the closeted Harper.
My take away from the film is that its supposed to reflect the struggles of coming out to loved ones and being in a relationship while those struggles are taking place, set during the festive season. While there could've been a few things addressed at the end (eg I'd have liked to see Harper and Sloane discuss the outing in more depth, and the rest of the family apologising for the way they wrongly treated Abby re the supposed jewellery theft after the twins told the truth), I think the happy ending was deserved, they really portrayed the emotions well, and I really enjoyed the film (although maybe not the bit that made me cry).
You know, I don't care if the Abby & Harper fandom is smaller than expected because the fans split up or because many misread the movie. I will stay here to post, retweet and reblog, write fanfics (whether it takes me slow or fast), share videos that I find on Youtube and everything that can be corellated to this fandom, regardless if there will be little or much following. This movie and these girls have captured my heart and I want them with me for the long journey.
Look at these cuties getting scared together. 😍

Relationships are complicated sometimes, nobody said it was simple, and for all it's worth, deserve to be fought, like love.
