A poem that you’ll never read
The wind blew you from my side
Back into a deep wild unknowing
Into a silence so hauntingly familiar
And still I’ve asked for you through so many midnights
Conjuring up nothing more than ashes and smoke
Stained palms and rattled lungs
Until I wrote a poem that you’ll never read
.
I told myself it needs to be this way
Over and over
On repeat
Swallowing the bitterness
Parroting a stolen wish buried deep in my belly
I wanted to believe it
Until I wrote a poem that you’ll never read
.
Love can be so fragile
A buoyant thing so vital and rare
To set it adrift feels flawed
And welcomes in its absence a perfect storm
One that settles deep in my bones
Endless waves crash and churn with grief
Until I wrote a poem that you’ll never read
.
I used to think it was a curse
To feel so deeply
To cry for those who couldn’t care less
But it feels right to both miss you and watch you go
To be held in loving hands
And to know that letting go
Saved me from being crushed
It feels right not knowing you anymore
And being sure that I’m writing a poem that you’ll never read.
