🕯 Currently finishing up the book of Judges; reminded that when we do what is right in our own eyes we are on the wrong path. There is consequence to disobedience and to obey is always for our good (...to fear the LORD our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today. - Deuteronomy 6:24) His desire for our obedience is from love. Also reminded to remain a heart of tenderness/flesh. I grapple with things in God’s Word; I love it, yes, but some of the things I read (especially going through the OT) there are stories that hurt my heart. I pray about this and that God changes my heart; His Word is truth and authority, not my emotions or sentiment. So I pray for Him to keep me subject to His Word and to reveal His goodness to me in His Word; He changes hearts and reveals His goodness even as I do not understand or “feel” it.

In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. - Judges 17:6 and repeated verbatim in Judges 21:25

"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” - Ezekiel 36:26

"And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh...” - Ezekiel 11:19

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness where your fathers tested and tried Me and for forty years saw My works. Therefore I was angry with that generation and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray and they have not known My ways.’ So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’ See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God. But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

A change in receptiveness may be difficult to recognize because it happens slowly and is often rationalized or excused. How do you respond when the Holy Spirit speaks to you through Scripture or some other means?

Carefully consider the following characteristics of a developing callousness:

• Insensitivity to what God says

• Resistance to His authority

• Disobedience to what the Lord is instructing you to do

• Justification of sinful conduct

• Rejection of reproof by others

• Preoccupation with worldly things

• Little interest in spiritual matters

• Absence of private devotion (Bible reading and prayer)

• Avoidance of gathering to worship with other believers

If you’ve discovered any of the above traits in your life, it’s not too late. Ask the Lord to mold your heart (Isa. 64:8; Jer. 24:7). Remember, He specializes in making all things new (2 Corinthians 5:17) and delights in our turning to Him.
