it seems like the sort of place where someone would come to think. the building he grew up in had a rooftop not unlike this one --- a dying, overgrown garden in the shadow of a water tower, a view restricted by other looming buildings, and the gnawing feeling that it is the only place someone could be alone in such a crowded city. except ------- ❝ — i didn’t expect anyone else to be up here, ❞ steve says as he holds the steel door open. | @hardbittten ! sc.
‘ i can see that. ’ evidenced, by the scattering of papers splayed out between them. displeasure bites, tense, into the lower register of jessica’s voice. ‘ do you usually try to do people’s jobs for them? ’

When Erik had come first to the private detective with the potential case, she’d been anything but open and receptive. As a matter of fact, he was pretty sure that the little sister had told him to FUCK OFF. Between that, the general state of her office, and the empty handle of wild turkey topped over the the desktop, suffice it to say he didn’t have a whole lot of faith in Jessica Jones ( reputation be DAMNED. )
So he’d decided to take matters into his own hands. Erik had asked Jessica to look into a series of kidnappings involving the young and homeless. His own research had led him to SEVEN OAKS CHILDREN’S HOME, where several of the kids had spent some time.
The administrative office was closed on Sunday ( they took the children to Mass ), which made it a perfectly good time to snoop around. He damn sure hadn’t been expecting her ass to pop up, though.
“ Figured you’d be trying to sleep off that hangover. “

“ y’need a hand? “ tínu halts and stops, a little SKEPTICAL of the short woman who doesn’t exactly look like a weightlifter, nodding at the ridiculous volume of - by any estimation - CRAP on the street. arya is probably rolling her eyes at him somewhere. “ this -- looks kind of heavy. “

“hey, no funny business. i need you to review a song we wrote.”
Just finished reading this book yesterday! Omg...I didn’t see that end coming! I’m still in shock! I’ve already started reading the next book in the series because I couldn’t wait to see what happens next! How will Merit (main female lead) cope with everything? Can’t wait to see. Anyone else finish reading any books before the end of February? #7/100 #HardBitten #ChloeNeill #partofaseries #book4 #vampires #Merit #shifters #supernatural #surprising #ChicagolandVampires #Chicago #goodreads #goodreadschallenge2020 #goalof100books #february2020 #readinggoal #navikreads #bookworm #bibliophile #needtocatchup #readingchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/B9N9AYQg2ru/?igshid=26uoaj1s0iyy

the bar isn’t crowded yet. it’s still early in the day, too early to be socially acceptable to be drinking, but miles has had a rough night and a rougher morning, and god, does it show. his eyes are bloodshot, hair and beard a mess. the bags under his eyes have bags. he probably ( definitely ) slept in this sweater. he’s tucked away in a corner of the bar, an untouched beer on the sticky table in front of him. if he drinks it, the Voices will go away. if he drinks it, it’ll be an easy fix. a dangerous fix. a slippery slope of fixes that he honestly, doesn’t believe he’s strong enough to avoid.
but he’s still trying not to fall down that slope, so he distracts himself by people watching. it’s an uninteresting past time until a woman looking just as bad as he feels appears. her Voices are dark, but mildly covered-- a mutant, then. he can’t help but stare, for once uncaring if he’s caught doing so.
