Do Not Pass
(A Rebuttal to “Parking Space” from Clouded Coffee: The View from the Cafe Window)
Parking spaces race like thoughts of you through my mind. Why didn’t I park?
The night moved too fast for me to understand just how much I needed you.
Double-lined center stripes screamed DO NOT PASS but I didn’t listen. I needed her.
Those thoughts of her were unwanted but not unnoticed and I positioned you passenger side on long drives in attempts to break the habit.
I drove a lot with those thoughts of her. Please don’t take it personal.
It wasn’t until later that I lost those thoughts and replaced them all with you.
