The Backyard Firepit I Didn’t Know I Needed

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how my backyard is just… there. It’s not ugly, but it’s not inviting either. A patchy lawn, a sad little patio set, and zero personality. Then, one chilly evening (okay, chilly for Florida—like 65°F), I realized: I need a firepit.

The photos got me. Not just the classic brick circles, but these curved, built-in seating designs that look like they belong in a boutique resort. One had little embedded lights along the edges—magic. Now I’m obsessing over the idea of a firepit that doubles as a hangout spot, where friends can actually sit without dragging folding chairs across the grass.

Not sure I’m ready to pull the trigger yet, but I’m saving this as my 2024 backyard glow-up inspo. Maybe by next winter, I’ll be the one hosting marshmallow roasts.

When Your Patio is a Concrete Prison (And You Want Out)

This weekend, I finally admitted it: my patio is depressing. It’s this sad little square of cracked concrete that feels more like a landing pad than a place to actually hang out. I want to drink my coffee outside without feeling like I’m in a parking lot, you know?

I started falling down a hardscaping rabbit hole—flagstone? Pavers? A fire pit?!—and ended up on Eight Lanes’ hardscaping page (here). They had photos of these gorgeous patios with natural stone and curved edges, and suddenly my sad slab looked even sadder. But it also gave me hope.

What I loved was how they talked about materials matching the style of the house. Our place is kinda rustic, so the idea of bluestone or irregular flagstone with creeping thyme between the cracks? Chef’s kiss. And a fire pit built into the design, not just plopped on top? Yes. A thousand times yes.

I’m still weighing costs (RIP my wallet), but for the first time, I can actually picture a patio that feels like an extension of our home. Maybe even one that makes me want to host summer BBQs instead of hiding inside.
