TBH, the longer I'm on tumblr, the more absurd it gets. And I've only been here for about 1,5 years, which makes me a baby.

It is and it isn't. Most of the toxic things like shipping wars, character assassination, and screaming matches are things I've seen before in different variations. After seeing a bunch of Harry/Hermione fans literally put together a petition to JK Rowling to "correct her mistake" of Harry/Ginny in the books, nothing surprises me anymore.

My particular problems with the more recent cultural phenomena of fandom as a place for self-expression explicitly for people who can't do so in their offline environment, a place where dealing with your shit in the way that helps you most is not judged as long as it's tagged/warned for so other people can avoid it. That people abruptly taking to judging certain coping mechanisms as unacceptable, while the fandom culture overall still touts itself as a nonjudgmental place where people can take care of themselves, infuriates me.

On the other hand, if TJLC is wrong, we're all going to look like that one Harmonian who literally rewrote Half-Blood Prince to put Harry and Hermione together, except she just revealed how badly Harmonians were misreading the situation by leaving in all sorts of Ron/Hermione flirtation moments that she hadn't noticed.

It's too bad Scholastic had that taken down, because I think the worst punishment for plagiarism would be to have that shit still publicly available ten years later.
