Question/Survey/Investigation
I was raised Christian, going to church and all that jazz. There are a lot of fics based around this concept, particularly in the Rhink fandom. I approach these fics with a sense of familiarity, I connect with the emotions and experiences in those stories. My question is to people who were not raised religious.
Do you read those fics? Are you ever confused or surprised by things mentioned/dealt with in fics with religion as a plot point? Do you think your experience of fics like that are fundamentally different from the experience of readers who did grow up religious?
Sondam is so interesting bc for once in this fuckin series the male character dies to further the female characters development
kuzuhina is great bc its tall transmasc x short cisguy and i think thats beautiful. #equality
Nekomaru and Disability
Okay, so we all know danganronpa... isnt the best when it comes to uhm....... good representation lksadjlkjf;ksdj......BUT
I think really often about nekomaru and how he's an example of just. a really uniquely well written physically disabled character? like, his disability isn't insignificant to his life; it informed his decision to become a team manager because he couldnt play sports, which is like. a really common experience for disabled people? and a lot of the times, disabled people do get led down paths they wouldnt otherwise go down were it not for their disability, and it can lead to their greatest sources of joy. he's not shy about it, but you still have to get to know him a little before hes really comfortable talking about it even though its important to his life, because like, yeah, health stuff can get kinda dark and scary sometimes, yknow? and i think thats really cool that it shows both elements of that. but, also, you can really tell its impacted his personality. hes not a private person, in fact, hes very open and often gets pretty tmi, which a lot of disabled ppl can relate to given how things like, ahem, "shitting" can be really impacted by your health and thus you have to keep other people informed about whats goin on in there. And a lot of the times the ONLY way its even remotely bearable is to do it in a humorous way
MOST of all, though, as a person who uses a mobility aid, i think the plotline that gets me and really emphasizes nekomaru as a #disabledicon is when he becomes a robot. nekomaru is super excited about being able to move and use his body again and hyped about all the features that his (in essence) new mobility aid has, meanwhile EVERYBODY AROUND HIM is acting like. so weird about it, treating him like a different person, acting like it's a tragedy he has to live this way, calling him names to "lighten the mood" and its like. YES, THATS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET A MOBILITY AID! MY GOD! SOMEBODY GETS IT! its insane to find this in danganronpa of all places and its honestly a bit hard to tell if youre supposed to agree with him or see him as outlandish for liking his new body but. GOD. hits so close to home. anyways physically disabled king
On Becoming Junko
There's a common motif in danganronpa about people "becoming" junko enoshima that i think about really often. its seen in all three of the main games (mukuro and the world at large, the remnants of despair and the world at large but literally this time, and tsumugi and the admiration of the pregame v3 cast) AND ALSO in dr0 (ryoko and mukuro), udg (komaru), and dr3 (monaca and the remnants). Clearly its an important element of the themes of danganronpa given how prevalent it is. In fact, it's SO important that it is in fact......... JUNKO'S TALENT (buh buh buuuuuumm!!) Junko's talent, the ultimate fashionista, the ultimate it girl, the person everyone everywhere wants to be, the universal person that the world envies. she can be anything she wants, she can dress in anything and still look the part, still look great. The one thing she can't be, however, is herself.
Nobody can truly ever become junko enoshima. even in a world where everybody wants to. even in a world where she wants everybody to.
And that's, ultimately, why her plans never really, truly work. why, in the end, eventually, after try after try after try, its never permanent. because despair is never permanent. eventually, there is hope. despair is unattainable. its what junko enoshima is, and because its what junko enoshima is, its something that nobody can ever really be, even if they want to, even if theyre forced to. look around, the world is in ruins, and yet there is still hope. and every time there is despair, there is hope, and there is hope, and there is hope. Junko is not despair, because she is not junko. she's a compilation of different fake personalities, she's a magazine cover, she's mukuro and monaca and an ai program, but she's not herself. not until one second before her death, not until she loses to hope, is about to feel her one final moment of despair, and has it ripped from her. she doesn't get to feel that despair in her final moments, no matter how much she wants to, because ultimately, she is an idea. she is not a person. and ideas cant feel. ideas are intangible. she has been treated as intangible and so that is what she's become. a belief.
Nobody can be junko because junko is a nobody.
People: make Chihiro dress more "masculine" to "show character growth" therefore misidentifying the actual issue being the association of femininity with weakness which is explicitly stated to be an inaccurate belief multiple times in the text
Mondo: is standing right there, wearing a big flashy sign that says 'my weaknesses actually derive from my perceptions of masculinity and femininity and the way i dress is a reflection of my insecurities'
Mondo character development is just him getting progressively more and more fruity
