I am generally not the best person to describe why an artist is good (or bad, for that matter), I just like what I like. But I just can't post anything as polarizing as Man Man without at least attempting to explain. My first experience with Man Man was as the opener for Modest Mouse many years ago. I knew nothing of them at that time. These guys, dressed in head-to-toe white, faces covered in white war paint, entered the stage & proceeded to give one of the most amazing & electrifying shows I have ever witnessed. They filled the room with more energy & more excitement than anyone else I've ever seen live. And what's more, they're incredibly talented. Don't take my word for it - go see them if you ever have a chance.
Harpoon Fever (Queequeg's Playhouse) is probably my favorite Man Man song. As previously mentioned, Man Man generally seems to have a polarizing effect on its listeners. People love them or, well, don't. I've played them for many friends & most give me a crazy look & say 'well that's a little too weird for me.' One of the things I love about the band is how much is going on at any one time, the layers & layers of sounds. Besides being a sucker for a piano in a rock song, Harpoon has the most lovely mixture of sweet melody, insane-scream-rock, yelling chorus layered with sweet female vocals, and lovelorn lyrics. It brings you up, it takes you down, it drags you back up again. This song is the reason a speaker in my car is blown. I literally cannot listen to it without cranking the volume up to a level that would suggest that I was a 16-yr-old girl in her very first car. Man Man is definitely underrated & most likely ahead of their time. They remain one of my all-time favorite bands. Hopefully you like this song as much as I do, but I don't expect it.
