Line that made me laugh:  All he had to do was remember the list and even his sober counter-part (as obtuse as he was – excellent word choice, Drunk Eddie) would able to figure it out.

7: Where did the title come from?

Okay. Here’s my ADHD brain connecting random dots. The prompt was  "Just by existing and by letting me speak to you, you give me an immense amount." which made me think of Road to El Dorado. There’s a song in the movie called “Without Question” and one of the lyrics is “I’d believe in anything were it not for you showing me, by just existing, only this is true: I love you.” First: I love that lyric on it’s own. But that sequence of thoughts was what inspired the moment of “It’s you.” and therefore the title. 

13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

When I write, I listen to rain/thunderstorm sounds so that I can tune out the world and just focus on the words. Maybe boring but it works for me.

Eddie taking care of Chris when he’s sick, maybe pls 💛😊

Eddie’s a hovery dad when Christopher is sick. But in his defense, he knows how quickly a cold or the flu can cross that line from normal childhood illness to something serious - partially because Chris has CP and partially because shit just happens sometimes.

He’s 100% the indulgent dad when Chris is sick too. He wants ice cream as a snack? Sure, as long as he takes his medicine. He wants chicken noodle soup from that one deli by Buck’s place? He’ll pay the delivery fee even if it’s not strictly in the budget. Blanket fort in his bed? Sure, anything for Chris. 

He loads Chris up with orange juice when he sick because look, it fixes everything. Seriously. 

He always makes Chris banana brown sugar oatmeal - but only once he’s started to get better. And it is frankly one of Christoper’s favorite things his dad makes. It’s absolutely a comfort food. 

They spend a lot of time curled up together under a blanket watching movies - almost always classic Disney - who cares about screen time rules when your kid is sick, right?

LET’S TALK ABOUT BUCK’S PARENTS!!

specifically, james and linda buckley from my fic so show me (family). they went through a couple iterations in my mind before i finally settled on the characters who came to be in that fic. i’m one of those people who loves reading all those A+ parenting tagged fics for john winchester and howard stark and more, so when i first got into this fandom i definitely binged through all the fics on ao3 about buck’s parents. i read the fics where buck’s parents were monsterous abusers, the fics where they were rich distant assholes, where they were divorced, where they were dead, etc etc etc. 

(quick! a fic rec: my favorite depiction of the buckley parents comes from @bibuddie’s amazing fic series the things we lost in the fire which is achingly beautiful and seriously heart wrenching. buck and maddie’s parents in this fic feel like real, lived people who are not one note—they’re not evil or over the top assholes, they’re just...two people who don’t know how to connect with their kids and it’s had serious ramifications for their relationships. if it interests you, just make sure to pay attention to the tags and archive warnings before reading because it deals with some heavy topics.) 

as soon as i started toying with ~*ideas*~ of writing a 911 fic, i knew i was interested in tackling buck’s parents. i mentioned to @crazyassmurdererwall that i was fiddling around with an idea and we talked about it for a while, working through my thoughts. they certainly evolved over time. i made this gifset about maddie and buck’s shared past around the time of that conversation (my first 911 gifset!) to keep track of what was canon for my own benefit. 

over time i really glommed onto maddie’s line from 3x11 “my mom and dad aren’t bad people. they’re just bad parents.” 

(this got long!! will anyone read this?? probably not)

and i started really thinking: what does that look like? some early iterations of the buckley’s in my mind involved maddie not knowing about how they treated buck (i tend to headcanon that buck and maddie have the same age gap as oliver stark and jennifer love hewitt, so about 12 years) but i wound up moving away from that idea. and then there were ideas about them being too invested in their kids lives, wanting to have an opinion on everything (this kind of came from the canon fact about them not liking doug and letting maddie know) but i wound up moving passed that too: i figured parents who were extra involved would have been mentioned in re: maddie’s kidnapping, the ladder truck bombing, buck’s embolism, the tsunami, maddie’s relationship with chimney, etc, etc. 

that’s when i kind of started looking at buck more closely. and actually the first thing i wrote for the fic was the scene with buck and eddie talking about his parents—i pulled up my notes app and just knocked that whole scene out and didn’t know what i was going to do with it. obviously it changed some once i started writing the fic (i had no intention of using that scene when i started writing the opening of eddie at the firehouse). and while considering buck i thought about the fact that he was clearly seeking out a family connection through the 118, how he was willing to wait for weeks (months?) after abby left and didn’t think anything was wrong when they weren’t speaking to each other, how he didn’t tell maddie or anyone when his leg was hurting, how his first instinct when he spotted eddie during the tsunami was to hide, and more. 

which is kind of how i settled on james and linda buckley. two people who i imagine are mid- to upper middle class, who planned to have maddie in their late-twenties and were looking forward to having the most of their 40s to themselves only to, surprise, conceive buck in their late 30s/early 40s. and i don’t see them as people who resent the fact that they had buck, more just a little befuddled by it all. i pictured them as the type of parents who cared about buck’s grades but weren’t the type to check if he was doing his homework or intervene if help was needed unless it was dire—they’d pay for a tutor if a teacher suggested it was necessary but they’d never come up with the idea themselves. 

and i saw them as the types of parents who just ... don’t engage on a personal level. they’re happy to talk about the news and politics and pop culture and history, but i don’t see them as the types to check in with buck and maddie about their friends or relationships or feelings. i pictured them as people who loved their kids but were a little uninterested in the actual act of parenting—not actively resentful or hateful, just...not their top priority. i genuinely believe (in this fic) they love buck and maddie, that they’re proud of them, that they were worried about maddie in her relationship with doug, that if buck had asked after the bombing they would have dropped everything to be by his side. but i just don’t think they would ever be compelled to make that effort without first being prompted. 

(my FAVORITE moment in the fic to write about their lack of awareness when it comes to kids: after Eddie agrees to go to lunch with the Buckley’s, “...James looks pleased. He claps a hand on Eddie’s shoulder, jostling Chris in the process and waking the boy up.” I liked that disconnect—he’s sincerely happy and wants to get to know Eddie and is being totally friendly, but he’s just hyper unaware of Chris.) 

over time, i figured that buck would pick up on that. which is how you get to where buck is in the fic: he loves his parents, but he doesn’t see them as people to turn to during a crisis and he doesn’t expect them to come take care of him. 

this has gotten very long and gone on a wild tangent but basically: i really loved writing james and linda in this fic. two people who i believe genuinely do love buck, who are hurt by his revelations during the lunch scene, and who will work to improve their relationship now that they know how buck feels about it.

008. do you listen to music while you write? if so, share a song that’s been inspiring you lately. i totally do!! i made a fanmix when i was writing TYBH that i still listen to a lot. i also have a soothing playlist that i listen to when writing grad school papers but it’s so associated with schoolwork now i can’t listen to it in any other context lol. but actually lately i’ve been listening to a playlist on repeat that @crazyassmurdererwall made for a sterek fic she’s working on (it’s SO fucking good and i hope she shares it once the fic is done). one song on the playlist that i keep going back to lately is change of seasons by sweet thing. 

011. if you could only write angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your life, which would it be? i mean... i think already do this?? lol, it’s gotta be angst all the way. sometimes fluff is TOO sweet and it sets my teeth on edge and makes me cringe (that’s probably my own issues popping up to ruin the day lol) and while smut is fantastic to read i get so awkward writing it. like, sorry guys, you’re never gonna get a smut buddie fic out of me, the most they’ll do is kiss and maybe the fic will be like ‘they disappeared into eddie’s bedroom and when they came out an hour later their hair was a mess’ but THAT’S IT. i’ve written ONE smut drabble for suits all the way back in 2012 and that’s all anyone’s gonna get outta me!
