the society (2019), I grieve you every single day of my life, I'll never get over you
ships in every season harry bingham and allie pressman - the society season 1
god i just rewatched the society. first of all what an awesome fucking show. second of all. harry and allie were about to rank top five in slow burn complex relationship history. acquaintances to unlikely partners to one night stand to political rivals!?!?! where he stages a coup against her!?!? but they've also fondly discussed an alternate universe where they could have been friends and helped each other instead!?!? adele was right we really could have had it all
What's your theory on why Harry hates Cassandra? (The Society)
i am so glad you asked anon! i and the other 3 hassandra stans that exist (woo!) have a pretty set theory on why these two interact the way they do. i could literally do an in-depth thorough analysis of all their scenes and explain it point by point and i will! bc i love them lol
first things first, we know that harry and cassandra are academic rivals. this is a known fact in the show, by just about everyone in the school. they are both extremely bright, well-spoken and driven people. hence, it’s unsurprising that they both have a lot of the same interests/extra curriculars, they’re both the two leads in the school play for crying out loud??? and as a direct result of this fact, it’s easy to see that they would also be in direct competition with each other a lot (for top marks, spots at ivy league universities, debate captaincy, student body presidency etc).
now you may be wondering, isn’t this reason enough for him to hate her? and my very simple answer is no. the dynamic these two have, while they have their moments of divorced-parents-bickering-style-banter, there is much more tension and angst that you’d never expect from such a relationship. which is what makes their dynamic quite intriguing. yes, they bicker and argue, yes, they like to one up each other, but it’s more than just little jabs here and there.
they also seem to know exactly what to say to strike a chord with the other. they both do this several times, i.e cassandra making a snarky comment about harry excluding people from his party and his “would you even come, cassandra?” response. you’d think an innocuous throw away comment like that wouldn’t cause her to literally freeze, and have no form of rebuttal (she’s captain of the debate team, mind you!). the same is seen when harry offers to drive to the town’s border to get help (after she does), and she responds with “you sober?”, a little quip, and he looks her dead in the eye and says “fuck you, cassandra.” ?????? a very strong reaction to his high school rival pointing out one of his vices.
my main theory (as well as several other peoples’) is that harry was cassandra’s yale boy. and let me explain why.
firstly, it’s discussed in the early episodes that cassandra had a fling with someone at yale admitted students’ weekend. allie refers to it when cassandra is spending time with gordie, which implies that whatever happened at yale clearly meant something to her as she a) told her sister about it and b) liked him enough that her sister is telling her off for cozying up with gordie when she clearly had feelings for someone else….. but also interestingly allie does not name the guy, which could imply cassandra never disclosed his identity… which would make sense given the nature of harry and cassandra’s relationship. also i will note that yes when gordie asks cassandra about who she’s been sleeping with (nosey little weirdo i stg), she tells him about yale boy, she says she only saw him twice but that could be interpreted as, she only slept with him twice, which would make the harry is yale boy theory still plausible.!
now, cassandra’s yale boy is never named in the series, even though he’s referred to. which would be fine, if not for the fact that a much more minor character gwen in the series, mentions having a fling with a guy at an admitted students weekend, but he doesn’t go nameless. we find out his name is seth, and that is mentioned several times. why would they name the guy a minor character hooked up with (which is less relevant to the overall storyline anyway) but not name the one cassandra hooked up with when it is relevant to the relationships of the main characters? a very strange decision if the yale boy is not someone we as the viewers already have been introduced to…
secondly, there’s the fact that harry and cassandra are elite students, and it’s very probable that they would be applying for the same ivy league schools, and that they would both get in. while it’s never mentioned where harry plans to go to university, we can assume from everything we know about him that he would be going to one of the good ones. it also seems that harry’s relationship with kelly is rather rocky a lot of the time, their disagreements in the series heavily imply they’ve had tiffs before. in that case what’s stopping him from having a fling with cassandra over an admitted students weekend..?
thirdly, in almost all of the interactions that we see between harry and cassandra in the series, harry seems to be much more angry with her than she is with him. he sounds bitter and aggravated, and isn’t afraid to lash out. but when he retaliates to her little quips, she often backs down at once, looking almost hurt/upset, as if there’s some unspoken fight happening between them, but they’re fighting about other stuff as a cover up almost.
fourthly, their glances. the best example in episode one, when harry gets up and follows campbell out of the church, one arm around his on and off again girlfriend kelly, he looks back directly at cassandra who’s already searching for his gaze. they lock eyes for a second, before she hurriedly looks away. if this was just your enemy, why are you searching for each other’s eyes like that? why would he even look back at all, if there wasn’t some underlying thing between them? if he just hated her because of their academic rivalry, why does he look back, as if to check her reaction, and look slightly guilty while doing it?
same as the scene in episode two, after harry has clearly just hooked up with allie and all of them run into each other in the rain. the way cassandra’s face falls at once, and she’s barely looking at allie. the angst is all aimed at him. the hurt, the betrayal, the almost heartbreak… it almost feels like a personal attack, to get back at her. why would he look extremely guilty at the sight of her? yes, he hooked up with her sister but if he hates cassandra why would he care about that? not to mention kelly aka his so-called beloved girlfriend who just dumped him for another guy (will, who he also hates) is standing Right There but who is he too busy looking at??? cassandra fucking pressman.
so basically my heavily winded response to your question (i apologise i couldn’t help writing an essay) is that harry and cassandra had some kind of fling at yale admitted students weekend, as even though they fought a lot and were extremely competitive with each other, they had a very ‘tit for tat flirtatious energy’ hence some level of ‘attraction’ as said by the actor who played harry on the series.
and cassandra no doubt must’ve been the one to end it, which would explain harry’s behaviour. humiliated, hurt and annoyed. they hook up, there was clearly some long buried feelings come up to the surface. maybe he opened up to her but she put a stop to it pretty quick, most likely due to fear of him ending up hurting her, or fear of what would happen back at home etc. and he never forgave her for it, he let her in only to have her cut him off. so his anger is coming from not only the competitive nature of their schooling and rivalry, but also being burned by her. she’s probably the first person to have fully understood him too, which would be a kick in the guts, to have that person turn around and say no i can’t do this with you. this would explain harry’s anger, and cassandra’s desire to make things right with him (re the committee and stuff, wanting his opinion etc).
there’s more to say but i can’t think of it all right now so i’ll just quickly say a couple funny things that seem a little too coincidental to be an unconscious choice.
- cassandra has a poster of harry styles in her bedroom. interestingly the poster only says ‘harry’ not harry styles which is an interesting easter egg
- there is a dormitory at yale university called ‘bingham hall’ …. and his name is harry bingham.. what the hell is up with that..
- in the scene in the church, cassandra says something about putting measures in place before everything gets out of control, and ‘we all start hurting each other’ and who does she directly look at when she says the line? mr harry bingham. harry grimaces to the floor when she says it, like he knows exactly what she’s referring to. why, writers, why?!!
okay i’m officially done with my rant. these two are one of my favourite ships. so much wasted potential. i even wrote a fic a while back of what i think went down at yale…… so here’s some shameless promo
