Summary: Noah always thought Harry's poetry was the key to bringing him back. But even he wasn't expecting this.

A/N: For @peonyblossom. Hi there! I'm your secret pal. We haven't interacted at all, but I always enjoy your edits when I see them on my dash. They're always stunning! I had a lot of fun going over your Harry tag and getting to know him.

I've only played ILITW twice (one of those in order to write this), so I'm not sure I got a good grasp on the characters. And there are several questions about Harry/Noah/Harry and Noah that only came to me as I was writing this, and by then it was too late to ask. I'm really sorry if anything contradicts your canon!

Noah places his duffel bag on the ground, uncaring of the dirt now clinging to the grey fabric, and clutches the notebook in his hand, his knuckles white under the moonlight. He clears his throat before taking a seat on the ground.

“Hey Harry. I’m here to visit.”

The rustling of leaves nearly makes him jump, but he pushes through the unease. When the dark shadow moves towards him, it isn’t fear he feels. It’s pain, and guilt. So much guilt.

“… visit?”

“That’s right.” He manages a smile. “Remember me? I’m Noah.”

“Noahhh. Friend?”

I’m more than that, he wants to say. But he swallows the sorrow that threatens to choke him. “Exactly. I’m your friend. Do you mind if I stay?”

“… play?”

Grief catches him by the throat. “Not this time. I thought I could read to you, if that’s okay.”

“Read? Booooks.”

“Not quite.” He waves the notebook in the air. “See? This is yours. It’s your poetry.”

“… minnneeee.”

“Yeah. I almost didn’t get it, man. Why did you never mention you kept this thing in the shed? Wasted valuable minutes breaking into your house for nothing, lemme tell ya.”

“Shed. Privacy.”

His heart stumbles in his chest. Harry understands him. The boy he fell in love with is still in there.

“D’you want me to read them to you?”

For a moment, it looks like Harry will say yes. But then the shadowy blur takes the shape of the monster that Noah will not let him become permanently.

Teeth glimmer when the monster snarls, “no!”

He feels invisible hands push him away, barely missing bashing his head against a rock in the process. He watches Harry float away, unsurprised even though his heart is torn to pieces. All the witches he consulted told him that the longer Harry remained trapped, the less he’d want to entertain his memories. Too painful for him, they all said. The more precious the memory, the more he’d resist it.

He clings to the words of one witch in particular.

“But don’t give up. As long as traces of his human personality remain, it’ll be possible to bring him back.”

“I’m not giving up,” he whispers. “I’m coming back for you, Harry.”

He tries again three nights later. Armed with a lantern in one hand and the notebook in the other, he looks for a place with fewer chances of giving him a concussion if Harry becomes angry again.

“Lotta good it will do me,” he mutters sarcastically. “He can conjure up creatures that will tear me up limb by limb.”

But… he isn’t scared. Maybe he’s delusional, but he can’t imagine Harry going that far. Not yet. Not until he’s completely lost himself.

Still, he has to brace himself before calling out to him. “Harry? I’m back.”

There is no rustling of leaves this time, no shadow approaching slowly. Instead, he’s simply there, floating mere inches away from Noah’s face.

“… frienddddd?” A pause. “… Noah.”

He remembers him. 

"Yeah, it's me. It's really good to see you again, Harry." 

"… everyone plays...?"

"Just me this time. But maybe we could talk instead?" 

"Talk." The shadows seem to deepen around them. "Yessssss."

He tells Harry about his most recent travels, doing his best to make them sound exciting rather than bleak and depressing. He stops after his last near-arrest, hesitantly, before deciding it is time. He needs to try again.

"I, uh, brought your poetry. Thought I'd read you some."

He tenses, waiting for Harry's wrath. Instead, he giggles. "Poetry. Good?"

"Very good," Noah says earnestly. Granted, he knows nothing about poetry, but that's not the point. When he reads Harry's poems, he can feel him close. His light, his kindness, his humor. Everything that made him fall in love with him in the first place, the traits that made him feel alive for the first time in a decade. 

These poems are Harry. He's convinced they're the key to bringing him back to himself. 

"So... Should I start?"

"Yessssss."

So he does. Opening the notebook at random, he chooses one poem and begins to read aloud. Harry listens in silence.

It's the most peaceful he's felt in months, not that he is surprised. That's what Harry has always been able to give him.

Peace. 

And in return…

No. Don’t think about that. Not now.

He continues to read instead, hoping that Harry doesn't notice the way his voice shakes.

It's been six months. Six months of leaving town in the dead of night to avoid capture and coming back randomly, of visiting the woods every night he is in Westchester, of reading Harry's poems every day. As he walks further into the woods, Noah’s heart pounds in his chest.

This is no ordinary visit.

He begins to rummage through his backpack as soon as he gets to his destination, pulling out goblets and candles and a silver mirror. He pricks his palm with the athame he bought two days ago, letting his blood pour into the goblets. From your veins to his, the witch said. Then he retrieves the most precious item of them all: Harry's notebook. 

He was right all along. His poetry is the key to bringing him back, in more ways than he first thought. 

"Hi Harry," he greets nervously. "I'm not very good at spells and rituals and stuff - that was always Ava's domain. I'm gonna try my best though. Just... Please don't cause an earthquake or a hurricane or something like that while I’m trying to focus, okay? I'm nervous enough as it is."

Then he starts to read aloud. From the spell to the poems back to the spell, he ties the magic incantations to Harry's own words. Pulling from his soul to restore his body.

Please, let this work.

For once, he doesn't notice the exact moment Harry arrives. His entire being is consumed by the ritual, so he only notices the gusts of wind and flickering flame when his words stop, when his heart beats a little slower. When it's all over.

Is it over?

"Harry?" He whispers, afraid to hope. "Harry, where... Harry!"

He runs to the body lying on the ground, his heart beating so fast he swears he can hear it. He falls to his knees without a thought, heaving a broken sob when he places his fingers on Harry's neck and feels his pulse strong and steady against his skin. 

Noah presses his hand to his mouth, trying to contain the sobs he can't hold back. When he looks down, he sees Harry's beautiful eyes staring up at him. The tears streaming down his face take on greater magnitude. 

"Noah?" He rasps out. "Wh- What's going on? Where is everyone else?"

"I'll explain," he promises, unable to stop the smile that spreads over his face like sunlight. "But don't worry. Everything is fine now."

Harry's eyes dart around them, coming to land on his notebook. "Is that...?" 

"Your poetry? Yeah." Bringing Harry's hand to his lips, breathing in the scent of him, Noah murmurs against his skin. "You have one hell of a way with words."

He blinks. "I don't understand."

"Don't worry," he repeats. "I do."

I need to know more about Harry 👀 what's his personality like? What would he say have been his most memorable experiences?

ahhh yayyyy i love answering questions about my mcs hehehehe

When Harry was a kid, before what happened to Jane, he was, like, a pretty regular kid. He wasn't super shy or anything like that. After Jane though, he became a lot more reserved and introverted. In high school, he didn't really have a lot of friends and most of the friends he did have were online friends he met through gaming. Most of his hobbies were pretty solitary hobbies like poetry writing and running. He is a friendly guy when you get to know him, but he's just kind of hard to actually get to know. He tends to be a little sarcastic and definitely becomes more sarcastic after he meets and befriends Ollie (who is suuuuuper sarcastic lol) bc their sarcasm rubs off on him a bit.

Obviously, his most memorable experiences are things that happened in ILITW and ILW and also Jane dying when they were kids. Other than that though, his most memorable experiences are probably (1) Jane's funeral, which I guess is part of her dying, but we never see it so. It was the first funeral he ever went to and it was just awful for him. He spent most of it sobbing. His parents made him leave early and he cried the whole way home. As for a few less emotional but still memorable moments we have (2) the first time he ran a marathon, which was when he was 15! It was memorable at the time because that's a huuuuuge accomplishment. After coming back from being Redfield though, it became even more memorable because Harry never really recovered enough to be able to run marathons again. Okay, maybe this one is emotional too. oops. uuuhhh anyways. (3) his first poetry reading! Harry gets even more into poetry after coming back, especially since he can't run like he used to, and he eventually gets published and does poetry readings and ofc he remembers his first one very well!! Especially because someone (probably Noah but idk I haven't really decided yet) records it for him. Also, Stacy writes an article about it + a poetry book review!!

desire and future for Harry

desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it? harry wants his life back!! quite literally, since he dies in ilitw. as a shadow monster, he still really wants his life back, but doesn't quite know that that's what he wants nor does he know how to express that want, so, no he's not very open with that. even if he was fully aware of that want though, he wouldn't be super open with it because he wouldn't want to make noah feel guiltier than he already does.

future: What's the worst possible future for your OC? Are they taking steps to avoid that outcome? Are they even aware it's a possibility? worst possible future is probably that he never gets brought back to life. he would just slowly, like, very slowly, lose his memories and all the people he cared about would eventually die... yeah. of course another bad possible future is that he gets brought back to life only to die again in the final battle in ilw. or have his loved ones die in the battle but he lives... yeah. yikes.
