Harsh stood in front of a large, metal vault door. It was closed, shut tightly. Behind her stood the party for this quest - a Sea Wolf machinist, a Keeper bard, and a Lalafell white mage.
She turned to look to the Sea Wolf. "Elilahr, wasn't it?"
He nodded. "Aye." Elilahr Bleifedarsyn was his full name, if she recalled correctly. His gun was still holstered, and he leaned against the rocky cave wall. "I'm ready."
"So am I." The Keeper miqo'te, Foxtail, had his bow holstered as well, but he stood at the ready.
The lalafell, Ananu Anu, looking tiny next to him, nodded as well. Her staff was already lit up.
The tunnel they were in was dark and damp, lit sparsely by lanterns. Shadows twisted and warped wherever she went. She could hear echoes of dripping water behind her. She turned around to face the vault door. Beyond that was the goal of their quest - to slay the monsters and clear the way for archeologist to discover the riches within. Maybe, if there were treasure in there, they could take it; but it'd need to be seen by the head archeologist first.
Harsh sighed and moved to open the door. She was silent, stoic, focused on the task ahead.
Elilahr grumbled behind her. He moved next to Foxtail. "Ain't she the talkative one."
Foxtail snorted. Harsh hadn't said a word the whole time they were in the cave system. "I wonder what's behind that pretty head o' hers."
They didn't know if she had heard them, but she didn't react either way. Once the door has opened fully, she entered the cave system beyond and started to gather aggro from the packs that were waiting for them. While fighting, her teammates noticed that she would stay ahead of them - leading the pulls away from them, so that they could slay the beasts from the back in peace. There was no need for her to move back and forth; she managed to get all of the beasts in one go.
Elilahr was impressed with her technique, but he was less impressed by her silence. It made any attempt of banter fall in the water.
Ananu stood in the back with them, keeping an eye on the situation. "Leave her alone," she piped up, casting heals on her party members. "I've heard she doesn't talk much for a reason."
"Oh yea?" Foxtail released a set of arrows that pierced the beasts successfully. "Why's that."
"No idea, it's a secret."
"Seems like she's the bigger secret here." Elilahr grunted as the noise of his gun echoed against the walls.
"I have heard rumors, though." Ananu dropped her staff momentarily, allowing herself to replenish mana. "But it'd be rude to gossip in front of her, really."
Elilahr looked over to Harsh. She had gone ahead and pulled another pack of beasts and was fervently hacking in on them.
Ananu rolled her eyes. "I heard she lost her girlfriend in the Calamity." she whispered.
"Hmm." Elilahr shrugged. "I mean, that sucks, but at some point, you gotta move on, y'know."
Ananu frowned. "She fully believes she's still alive, you know. I mean, she remembered her, and others said they'd seen someone like her, so she's gotta still be around somewhere, right?"
Elilahr shrugged again. "That's great for her, but it's been, what, five years since the Calamity? Wouldn't she have found her by now?"
"Not only that, why isn't the girlfriend trying to find her?" Foxtail butted in.
"Maybe she's forgotten," Ananu said. "Maybe she's moved on without her."
"That would really suck." Elilahr said.
The three considered this silently as they concentrated on fighting a slightly bigger beast than average. It had the shape of an epitaph. Here lies you, Elilahr imagined it said. Harsh, meanwhile, was still pulling with fervor.
In the end, they succeeded in getting through the cave system; Harsh, still, hasn't spoken a word. That's one vault they couldn't crack, Elilahr thought, and so did the others.
