A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 165
Episode Title: If It Works Once, It'll Work Over And Over Again
MY 15 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 165 (manga chap 246):
I had to perform some censorship of body parts to avoid being unappealably flagged by Tumblr. If one day my blog should disappear completely, you can be sure it’s 100% Kondou and his nakedness’ fault, with probably some help from Sacchan and Madao.
1) The anime team’s attempt at live action, which was equal parts disturbing and oddly fascinating.
2) Honestly, I got kinda bummed out by Sunrise’s anime studio. Animators deserve a bigger, better and brighter office than that dammit. There shouldn’t be any clutter around because their office is so damn big there’s plenty of room for their crap.
3) I couldn’t decide if I was creeped out or impressed by Mannequin!Gin-chan’s abs, but I’m pretty certain I was just completely unsettled by Mannequin!Kagura. You know what? Never mind, the more I look at this picture the more I’m just creeped the fuck out, so creeped out wins.
4) I thought it was sweet of Kagura to make porridge for Gin-chan. Nevermind that she ended up eating it herself, it’s the thought that counts.
5) Shinpachi was skipping because he was so happy he spend time alone with Tae-chan. I don’t even need this for the ships tally because there was something even better.
6) SO CUTE.
7) This was kind of an unnecessary cutaway (and it wasn’t in the manga), and I have no idea if I even liked how Gintoki and Kagura looked cuz they seemed really uncomfortable, but I just wanted to include it cuz at least they’re wearing something different?
8) I loved that Gintoki and Kagura were acting all concerned because they just really didn’t want Tae-chan to cook.
9) These two horny, weirdo stalkers.
10) I’ll probably still get flagged for this.
11) Tae-chan being mercilessly brutal towards poor Kondou as usual.
12) Sacchan was absolutely super duper very clearly naked under that little sticker I had to put there; thi post would’ve been nixed for sure. I can’t believe the anime team got away with showing that on tv. This moment was in the manga too, but she looked like Barbie instead of well, a bottom-naked woman.
13) The whole Zura = Will Ill Smith = Obama = Messiah was just so freaking WEIRD, and I really don’t want to think too hard about Sorachi-sama’s intention behind all that cuz it was slightly uncomfortable, but it was somewhat amusing hearing Zura’s voice come out of Ill Smith/Obama.
14) I have no words.
15) I mean, I guess it’s a good thing that this ending was established as just a figment of Shinpachi’s imagination in the anime, because it was definitely less clear in the manga. Still, very wtf.
Honorable Mention:
Yet another piece of evidence that someone on the anime team absolutely ships my OTP (or maybe the entire team does) because the preview for the next episode was soooo unbelievably suggestive, as exemplified by this small snippet:
SHIPS TALLY:
Kondou x Otae: at least he got to sleep a few feet away from her for a brief moment.
Gintoki x Sacchan: her fevered dream lacked her usual quotient sexual violence...Sacchan must’ve been really sick.
Shinpachi x Otae: his siscon level was going through the roof.
Hasegawa x Otae: he came specifically to see her, as if he did that all the time. And -chan is also awfully familiar.
Hasegawa x Zura: “Zura-chi”???? And how did he know Zura would be dropping by later? Do they like chat on the phone or actually get together often or something??

Episode Title: Summer Vacation Is The Most Fun Right Before It Begins
MY 11 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 114 (manga chaps 174 and 175):
1) I guess the amount of blood gushing out is proportional to the degree of virginity?
2) I loved Kagura’s song! Fuck that stupid pervert turtle.
3) Zura making the best entrance in the history of the world.
4) I completely expected Hasegawa to do that while he’s alone on the island, but I absolutely didn’t expect that of Shinpachi.
5) I didn’t think what Gin-chan was doing was particularly embarrassing so not sure why he was even embarrassed, but most importantly, NICE ABS.
6) Kyuu-chan is so freaking adorable. She was so proud of her accidental poop drawing.
7) Zura is the goofiest of them all; he did all the embarrassing things on top of pissing that sign. I love him.
8) I think that’s like the first time we’ve ever seen Madao without his glasses in the anime...probably in the manga too. Weird how not more was made of it.
9) This was so cute...
10)...even cuter.
11) Noooooooo I didn’t like this development at all (even though the height difference was kinda adorable). So definitely not a favorite moment but more like an extremely distressing one.
SHIPS TALLY:
Gintoki x Shinpachi: after “years” of being stranded on the island, it was sweet that the first person Pachi-kun wanted to see was Gin-chan.
Kyuubei x Otae: they were obviously on a date.
Hasegawa x Otae: I think Madao was kinda crushing on Tae-chan a little.
Gintoki x Zura: violence = love between them as usual.
Hasegawa x Shinpachi: this awkward tableau stirred up very unwelcomed thoughts in me.
Disclaimer: Gintama is not only about shipping. Gintama is hilarious, clever, exciting, poignant, heart-breaking, loving, brilliant, and just completely unbelievably amazing. It is only due to Sorachi-sama’s immense generosity that I am able enjoy Gintama on an extra another level, the shippy level, and I am forever grateful for that. GINTAMA IS LIFE AND LOVE.
A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away...Episode 19
MY 5 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 19 (manga chap 32):
1) I’m glad he has 4 changes of kimono, but I think the more important question should have been, how many sets of that black inner wear does he have since that’s what’s actually touching his skin, soaking his sweat.
2) The little kid falling off his bike as he was riding behind his mom was an addition of the anime team and it was totally just random but so funny and also such a teachable moment at the same time. I appreciated how that mom was bringing up her son, not coddling him, basically telling him to suck it up and move on. That kid is going to grow up to be good people.
3) The way they both got stiff at the word “bounty”.
4) Their whole journey to the beach was also unique to the anime. I loved that the first person Tae-chan sacrificed to the car was her own beloved brother.
5) I love happy endings, especially when the alien whale gets to live and make new friends.
SHIPS TALLY:
Gintoki x Hasegawa: birds of a feather and all that...if only Gin-chan’s virtue would rub off on Madao more, I might be more into this super shippy ship.
Hasegawa x Otae: he was willing to risk his life and eat her food instead of offending her by rejecting it. Kinda sweet I guess?

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away...Episode 16
MY 9 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 16 (manga chap 16):
Note: moments 2 - 7 were original to the anime. Bless the anime team for adding those scenes.
1) I forgot the English translation was different for MADAO in the anime, so when I first saw this, I was like damn, that’s unnecessarily harsh.
2) Hasegawa foolishly visiting the Snack Smile and naively thinking Tae-chan would take it easy on his wallet.
3) Loved seeing Zura exhibiting his recruiting skills.
4) The fact that the interrogation scene existed was already delightful enough, but then...
5) ...things took a weird turn in a hilarious way when Hijikata and Sougo insisted on stripping Hasegawa.
6) Sougo looking downright predatory. Lmfao.
7) Poor Madao.
8) YEOUCH for Hata and Ew for Gin-chan considering what he’s actually holding in his hand.
9) Hasegawa regaining his sunglasses.
SHIPS TALLY:
Gintoki x Hasegawa: technically canon and it all started from here. They had lotsa shippy moments. As a GinHiji-shipper, I was jealous.
Kondou x Otae: Kondou should be happy that he is the only one who gets to see and experience this angry, violent, unreasonable side of Tae-chan.
Zura x Elizabeth: they’re a unit. But I don’t know why Zura looks so weird here.
Hasegawa x Otae: I mean, he was her customer so if you ship them, it’s kinda cute that they have this moment together, even if Tae-chan is trying to milk him dry of all his money.
