February 2, 2015 - 7" selections from Kenya's Golden Age with Fredrik Lavik + Mauritanian hip-hop group Ewlad Leblad
DJ and record collector Fredrik Lavik, the man behind Soundway's Kenya Special compilation, drops by the studio (with his mum!) to share some choice selections from his 20000+ collection of Kenyan 7" records, as well as the story of how he got them. He is in town direct from Finland for a mini-tour that will see him guest star at Canicule Tropicale on Friday, February 6, and at Turning Point (Toronto) on the 7th. Astute listeners will actually be able to hear the Montreal snowstorm wailing in the background! For more mixes and musical samples, check out Fredrik's Afro7 website. http://afro7.net

One of my favorite experiences from the trip so far was our time in the old caravan city of Oualata, Mauritania, talking to the men--young and old--who would be competing in a series of three-day camel races. Speaking in Hassaniya, one of the older men remarked, "You speak like the Bithan!" Speakers of Hassaniya Arabic (those descended from the Beni Hassan tribes of Yemen) refer to their language as klam al-bithan ("speech of the whites," which is how they refer to themselves), and to be told that you speak like one of the people is the highest compliment any linguist can receive.
Just spent $70 on what I thought was going to be a pretty thorough and comprehensive Hassaniya Arabic book to supplement what I already know, and it's complete shit. It's supposed to be a good overview of spoken Hassaniya, and it's literally just texts in Modern Standard Arabic being A) transliterated into phonetic Hassaniya and B) read aloud as Modern Standard Arabic by Hassaniya speakers on CD.
There's no actual Hassaniya dialect anywhere. Such disappoint.
Ana Saharauia (I Am Saharawi) by Mariem Hassan. This song was all over Saharawi radio when I visited the refugee camps last year.
Do i have any followers who speak Hassaniya Arabic?
