As long as they didn’t overlap with his Hogsmeade weekends, Severus didn’t usually get too frustrated with detentions. He did stupid things and he knew it, and if getting a detention meant that he could speak his mind or get someone else in trouble that he thought deserved it, he would take it without batting an eye. That was, unless Sirius Black was involved.
Late on that cold, Friday night, Severus found himself dragging his feet as he made his way towards the prefects’ bathroom on the fifth floor. After a rousing game of ‘throw mud at the ugliest bloke in the room’ during Herbology earlier in the week, he’d landed himself and Sirius a particularly intimate detention with Filch. Severus had begged and pleaded all he could, promising to do twice the cleaning as long as he could serve his detention on a different day than his mortal enemy, but Filch couldn’t have cared less. They were stuck together.
He arrived at the bathroom a bit before the other boy to find the caretaker looking uncharacteristically happy as he brought out buckets, scrubbers, and sponges for the two of them. Severus took his share with a sigh, knowing that the faster he worked, the faster Sirius would be out of his hair, and perhaps all of the work his mother made him do around the house would come in handy. He then turned around and stared down the hallway, tapping foot as he waited.
“That other boy had better hurry up... The prefects have left you two a lovely surprise tonight...” said Filch from the shadows behind him, and Severus felt a shiver go down his spine. If Filch was in a good mood during a detention, something really awful had to have gone on in that bathroom.
